Thank you sharing the view of Gregory of Nyssa. We are more concerned about biblical revelation as compared to views of different Christians on this thread. If we considered the views of different Christians on this issue, we will have mutually exclusive views and perspectives which nullifies the vailidity of each other’s personal views.
The Church Fathers are part of Sacred Tradition and are in line with Sacred Scripture–in conjunction with the Apostolic Church, they interpret Sacred Scripture for us.

I am sorry if you do not agree with this.

Oh boy… 🍿
Don’t be a spectator, instead be a participant on this thread. Who know’s, at the end of working through the gospel of John together as Christians, I may become a Roman Catholic Christian and you may become a Protestant Christian. 🤷

I understand the Catholic Faith and Sacred Traditon. I encourage you to read the Sacred Oral and Written Tradition thread for additional insight. However, this thread is about working through the gospel of John together as Christians, allowing the Spirit of God to teach us through Holy Scriptures. Please continue to participate. 👍

It is fine to discuss it at any time. You brought it up first. 😉
Actually I did not bring it up. Please see post 10. I don’ think the Eucharist is found in John chapter 1. I think we all need to wait until we get to John chapter 6 before we get into a Eucharist discussion.

I am not Roman or Eastern Catholic. I am Orthodox. And you do not dictate that we throw away our Sacred Tradition. I will continue to participate and enlighten you with the teachings of the Church Fathers. 🙂

Yes you did. See above statement about incarnation and Eucharist.

I always talk about the most Precious and Holy Body and Blood of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in the holy Eucharist.

The Eucharist is implicit and/or implied throughout Sacred Scripture.

Sure, if you want to quote the Church Fathers in context to the chapter we are discussing, that’s fine.

I was just responding to post 10. Monkey started it. 😉
Jesus is the unblemished Lamb of God. He fulfills the ancient law of Passover as the Lamb. Therefore, you must eat of the Lamb to fulfill the Passover meal. This is called the Eucharist.

I would love to do the Gospel of Mark since that is my favorite Gospel. Thanks! 😃

Oh I see–blame it on Monkey! 😃

I’ll make a short and simple statement:

Without the Incarnation, there is no Eucharist. 🙂

Peace.
Without the incarnation, perfect obedience to the Father’s will, suffering and the cross…there is no ressurection and no ablilty for us wretched sinners to call God abba Father. Please note that we became children of God not by our own free will. Rather we became children of God through the Father’s will.

John 1

9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, [2] and his own people [3] did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

Romans 8:15
For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”

Galatians 4:6
And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”

More importantly, without the incarnation, there is no Church, no revelation about the Trinity, no Bible, and no way for us to have hope at all.

The Church is not the savior my friend. How does your view on the Church fit in with John chapter 1? It sure seems God grants new birth according to His will, apart from men.

Matthew 3:9

And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.

Act 17

22 So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. 23 For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, [2] 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. 26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, 28 for

“‘In him we live and move and have our being’

Just seeing what you would say. We will get to the Visible Church and its importance later.

Serious question: Is a CAtholic EVER correct about scriptural meaning in your Bible Study thread if they disagree with you?

I thought you were going to discuss John 1 and here you go mentioning Acts, Matthew, Romans, and Galatians.
Sure, let’s do the gospel of Mark after John. Do you think the disciples ate the actual flesh of Jesus and drank his literal blood in the upper room while Jesus was still with them? I’m sorry if this offends, but I just watched a zombie movie with my son. Your comment reminded me of that flesh eating zombie movie. The 2nd feature should have been a vampire movie. Well, at least my comments are in-line with Halloween (Reformation day). 🤷
I am still offended by this slight of the Eucharist. When you attended Mass with Catholic friends and took the Eucharist did you see yourself as a zombie? Did you see taking the Eucharist as some type of joke?

There is so much truth in Sacred Tradition because much of it lines-up with Sacred Scripture. Let’s not make it my Bible Study but our Bible Study. In our other Bible Study on the Epistles of Paul, Ryan is leading that particular study through 1 Corinthians. He actually picked that particular book. If our two Bible Studies did not consist of both Protestants, Catholics, and Orthodox Christians then it wouldn’t be so much fun. 🤷 We can always go to our own tradition Bible Studies, but how oftern can we have an inter-denominational study like this? We should pray that God the Holy Spirit will illuminate truth to us in-spite of our presuppositions. If you want to lead this study through the gospel of John, please feel free to do so. All I ask is that we go through the chapters in an orderly and systematic way. Let the Scriptures dictate our conversations. I’m not the standard of truth on this thread. Let’s just reason together in the Scriptures and see what we discover together.

To make it clear, when we go through the Scriptures together, just comment about the particular chapter that we are in. You can use additional Scriptures and your sacred tradition to support your comments and positions.
