What’s that great quotation from Chesterton about the Catholic Church being the only thing that can preserve a man from being a prisoner of his own age? I couldn’t find it but it tells the whole story in 25 words or less.
Bah, humbug! The Catechism of the Catholic Church is saturated with the writings of the Fathers as are the documents of the Second Vatican Council: simply saturated. The Second Vatican Council did not dismiss these writings but drew heavily upon them. They are part of our living heritage; any development of our own day must arise organically from the whole fabric of the Magisterium, including the Early Church Fathers. We do not isolate ourselves in our own age. Ours is not the Church of “what’s happening now” it is the Church for all time.Mickey,
Thanks for the encouragement, but it’s just not in my nature to cause such a stir. I was hoping to gather enough knowledge to convince her of teaching the truths or at the very least ensure that I’m grounded in the truth and that my classmates hear other views on these topics.
Another area of concern is that, when I mentioned that I would like more references from early church fathers - rather than today’s modern theologists - there was an attitude conveyed that we are a post Vatican-II church and we need to concentrate on interpreting Vatican-II…how do you address someone who comes at you from that angle?
Peace!
