Hello everyone! 👋

I just wanted to drop a quick note to encourage everyone on the EC forum to join the Jesus Prayer group. I wasn’t the one who started it, but I’m very grateful to whoever did. It would be wonderful if others joined the group to share their experiences, readings that have struck them, etc. Also, the ultimate goal of the group is that the Jesus Prayer be prayed by forum members aroung the clock. Perhaps we can set up shifts! 😛

All are welcome, Eastern Catholic, Orthodox, Roman Catholic, etc. It is a group for prayer and for spreading devotion to the Holy Name, a devotion that has every bit as rich a history in the West as in the East. This may be the one thing that unites us, East and West, Catholic and Orthodox. Perhaps by praying the “Prayer of the Heart” together we will hasten the Holy Spirit’s work in restoring unity! :gopray:

Devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus is very developed in the Roman Catholic world.

The Litany of the Name of Jesus and the Jesus Psalter are two popular examples.

St Leonard of Port Maurice would say 1000 times daily: “My Jesus, mercy!”

And there is the tradition in honour of the Holy Name of Jesus to write the “IHS” monogram and have it placed in one’s home or over the door (correct?).

The Jesus Prayer can take many forms.

What is your favourite way to invoke the Most Holy Name of Jesus?

What is the “Jesus Psalter?” Is this something that requires some sort of rosary? Could I make a prayer rope for it? I’m intrigued.

I do have a couple of questions…

Philip is it true that you make prayer ropes and if you do can I request on from you? Please:)

Alex, I have been praying the Jesus prayer for a few years now. I believe I just started with the basic but it seems to have grown or developed over time. I did ask someone once about adding to it because I had read a few threads or posts around CAF saying that one had to be very careful as to how one prays the Jesus prayer so I got worried that I should not have added to the prayer. I was reassured that I could pray it any way I wanted too so I have have not stopped praying it this way and since you asked this is my favorite way to invoke the most Holy Name of Jesus through praying with the prayer rope…

I believe my rope is a 100 knots with three beads to break it up and a cross with three knots leading to the 100 knots that serves as a fourth bead. On the Cross I pray the Glory be then three Hail Mary’s then an Our Father…then on each set of 25 knots I pray the following…

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God!
Have mercy, on us sinners!
Teach us, to know You!
Teach us, to hear You!
Teach us, to understand You!
Teach us, to choose You!
teach us, to love You!
Teach us, to put our complete hope and trust in You!
Teach us, to live Your Divine Will!
Teach us, to find our strength and life in You!

Then on each bead I say an Our Father…and then end it with a Memorare.
  • When I am pressed for time or find myself surrounded with a lot of distractions…I usually just resort to an abbreviated version…
    Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God!
    Have mercy, on us sinners!
    Teach us, to put our hope and trust in You!
With my prayers to all…

That is fine and beautiful!

Ultimately the Jesus Prayer form will take the shape we give it and I believe that shape comes from the ongoing conversation between our souls and the Holy Spirit.

Fr Lev Gillet the “Monk of the Eastern Church” (which is how he titled the books he published) wrote a book on the Jesus Prayer where his version is only the one word “JESUS.” And he used this word to pray over those he met on the London buses and underground, and over everyone and everything.

On Mt Athos, the monks say the Prayer as “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.”

The “Church-approved” form is “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.”

Another form is “Lord Jesus Christ, by the Mother of God, have mercy on me a sinner.”

Yet another is “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, by the intercession of Your Most Pure Mother, of Saint ( ) and all the Saints, have mercy and save me a sinner, for You are Good and the Lover of Mankind” (which is the “concluding Collect” of all Eastern services).

The Hail Mary can be a form of the Jesus prayer - any prayer with the Name of Jesus can. The Fatima decade prayer, the litanies of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Precious Blood of Jesus are other examples. Whenever St Francis of Assisi said the Name of Jesus out loud in conversation, he would stop and then lick his lips, saying that when we pronounce that Name, it is like spiritual honey bursting forth in our mouths to overflowing, so it is important to lick the overflow so none is wasted . . .

Whatever form we choose or create, it is always good to pronounce the Divine Name slowly and then let it act on our souls sacramentally by pausing and drinking deeply of its Sacred Waters.

The Canon to our Lord Jesus addreses him as “Sweetest Jesus Christ” - good idea!"

Just joined in to the forum. This is one that is perfect for all Orthodox members of the CAF to participate in. An enthusiastic and thoughtful group of members have already posted and I encourage all to sign up and take part. God bless us all. bob.c
