Jesus Reaction to Demons

Most people I know (or read about) have no desire to come face to face with a demon and I don’t know of any that have done this that walk away saying they weren’t scared during the encounter. Since Jesus was both human and divine do you think he had any bit of nervousness when confronting the demons he cast out in the Gospels? From reading the Gospels I don’t sense he had any fear of them whatsoever…but being that he was also human I wonder if there was a part of him that was a little nervous during the encounters.

One can speculate on these things, but we can never know for sure. I however, don’t think he would have felt nervous (in my own humble opinion). His trust in His Father, and His self evident and self known authority and power would have left no room for fear, If one can simply command, and still the waves of the sea, or raise the dead… a few demons would not cause much concern.

However, as you rightly point out Jesus was fully human, and therefore had the capacity to feel fear.

From scripture, it seems that demons know they are powerless against God. I don’t think Jesus was nervous at all. Remember that one where the demons pleaded Christ to cast them to the pigs? They know that if Christ commands it, they have no choice but to follow. Such is the power of God over them.

He wept at Lazarus’ death, yet I recall what seems to be indignation in His reply to the father who asked Him if He could help with the man’s demon-possessed son: And Jesus said to him, “If you can! All things are possible to him who believes.” Mark 9:23 I think that same confidence likely showed also in His confrontation of evil.

He possesses a human nature, yet a perfect nature. Thus, it is not likely that He would fear either anything of this earth (John 16:33) or of the spirit realm (1 Peter 3:22). Adam did not fear until he had sinned, thus fear would appear to attach only to a sinful state.

I don’t think demons had any power over Jesus. They were more of an annoyance.

I could picture Him having a “startle reflex” if something suddenly appeared before Him and He did not choose to foresee its coming and prepare His human body for it. A “startle reflex” is just a physiological response. But fear? I can’t even begin to imagine that. He knew the demons better than they knew themselves.

I don’t believe Christ would know fear period. He knows the true nature of Reality, as it extends from this world of phantasm and delusions, into the next world. He knows exactly what demons are, and what they represent. They know it too. Jesus has no faith, as we understand it, because he and the father are one.There is surety and knowledge of God.

Jesus prayed to God saying that he would that the cup of suffering be taken from him, but not his will but the Father’s will, thus fulfilling the statement “The spirit is willing but the flesh is indeed weak”. I don’t think Jesus ever felt this weakness when dealing with demons.

All things came into being through Jesus, so those demons came into being through Jesus therefore Jesus is not afraid of his creation.
