Is there any historical evidence which makes the resurrection of our Lord easier to believe?

How do we know that the our Lords tomb was empty and that people claimed to have seen him risen from the dead, couldn’t all of this be legends?

God bless you!

For me, I think good evidence is:
  1. the Shroud of Turin combined with the Sudarium of Oviedo.
  2. The amazingly bold actions of the apostles, to the point of martyrdom. Who would die for a lie? Peter and Paul’s remains are still in Rome where they were martyred.
  3. My answered prayers. I’ve been praying to the resurrected Christ all these years. *Someone *has been answering my prayers, who can it be? Hint, hint…🙂
  4. I know two women who have seen an apparition of Jesus, both credible witnesses, not loonies!
Our Risen Christ is real. Have faith! 😃

Read Paul + the Acts. No one ever in all human history achieved this. Basically this is why the early Christians and (later folk) believed. This guy was not just a prophet, reformer or holy man. This guy defied/re-wrote the ‘laws of Nature’. He was divine. For those who believe no explanation is necessary; for those who don’t, no explanation is possible.

Keep searching…you’ll get there.

What really amazes me about the Turin Shroud is the 650 data points at which the Face matches the Christus Pantocrator icon near Athens.

650 data points!!! And the icon dates from the 500s.

The best way to become convinced is to allow Jesus Christ Himself to convince you. Go to a local Parish and sit before the Tabernacle. The consecrated Host inside the Tabernacle is not dead, but alive. What was once bread now contains the living Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ. Go and spend time in His presence. Tell Him of your sincere doubts. Ask Him to reveal to you that He is there. Then, be as patient with Him as He has been with you. And, when you are aware that He is there, you will be changed.

Secondly, there is this witness from the scriptures:
Acts 5:34-39
Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (RSVCE)
34 But a Pharisee in the council named Gama′li-el,[a] a teacher of the law, held in honor by all the people, stood up and ordered the men to be put outside for a while. 35 And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you do with these men. 36 For before these days Theu′das arose, giving himself out to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him; but he was slain and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. 37 After him Judas the Galilean arose in the days of the census and drew away some of the people after him; he also perished, and all who followed him were scattered. 38 So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this undertaking is of men, it will fail; 39 but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!”
Rather than being scattered once their leader was killed, the Church demonstrated that it was cohesive and began to grow rapidly. This is contrary to all false movements.

The Evidence for Jesus’ Resurrection
By William Lane Craig
youtube.com/watch?v=4iyxR8uE9GQ

Fact 1:
After his crucifixion, Jesus was buried by Joseph of Arimathea in his personal tomb. This is significant because it would have been difficult for the disciples to make up the story of an empty tomb when everyone knew where the tomb was located.

  1. *]Jesus’ burial is attested in the very old tradition quoted by Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians.
*]“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.” (1 Co 15:3-5)
*]Paul “received” this account from Peter within the first five years of Jesus’ crucifixion making the possibility of legend or myth very unlikely.
*]The account of the burial is part of very old source material used by Mark in writing his gospel. The passion narrative, in particular, is thought to be from an even earlier account that was used by all of the gospel writers.
*]As a member of the Jewish court that condemned Jesus, Joseph of Arimathea is unlikely to be a Christian invention.
    *]No competing burial story exists.

    Fact 2:
On the Sunday following the crucifixion, the tomb of Jesus was found empty by a group of his female followers.

    1. *]The empty tomb story is part of the very old source material used by Mark.
*]The old tradition cited by Paul in 1 Corinthians implies the fact of the empty tomb.
*]Mark’s story is simple and lacks signs of legendary embellishment.
*]The fact that women’s testimony was worthless in first century Palestine strengthens the case that women were the first to discover the empty tomb. Why would any account use the suspect testimony of women if it were not an accurate recounting of what really happened?
*]The earliest Jewish allegations that the disciples had stolen Jesus’ body presupposes that the tomb was empty.

      Fact 3:
On multiple occasions and under various circumstances, different individuals and groups experienced appearances of Jesus alive after his death.

      1. *]The list of eyewitnesses to Jesus’ resurrection appearances (which is quoted by Paul and vouchsafed by his personal acquaintance with many of the people involved), guarantees that such appearances occurred. These included appearances to Peter, to the Apostles, to 500 people at one time, and to James.
*]The appearance traditions in the gospels provide multiple, independent attestation to these appearances.
*]Researchers have noticed signs of historical credibility in the specific appearances; for example, the unexpected activity of the disciples’ fishing prior to Jesus’ appearance by the Lake of Tiberius or the otherwise inexplicable conversion of James.

        Fact 4:
The disciples believed that Jesus was risen from the dead despite having every reason not to believe it.

        1. *]Their leader was dead, and Jews had no belief in a dying (and rising) Messiah.
*]According to Jewish law, Jesus’ execution as a criminal showed him to be a heretic and a man literally under the curse of God.
*]Jewish beliefs about the afterlife precluded anyone’s rising from the dead before the general resurrection at the end of the world.

The historical resurrection of Jesus is the best explanation of these facts.

Some things that help me with believing:
  1. The belief of the Apostles. I would think it psychologically impossible for anyone to believe a person has resurrected from the dead after being brutally murdered 2 days earlier, unless it actually happened. And then willing to die for that belief.
St. Thomas’ conversion especially. He doubted the Apostles and would only believe if he saw Christ.

St. Paul’s conversion is pretty convincing as well. To go from staunch Pharisaism and persecuting Christians to spreading the Gospel throughout Europe is amazing. Considering all his knowledge about the Scriptures.

Keep in mind these (beside Paul) were ordinary men. Not great speakers or intelligent men, but ordinary “blue collar” people.

Were this all false the Jews in Jerusalem could have just said Christ wasn’t real but only a hoax. But they didn’t. In fact, I think it was a Jew named Josephus who recorded the existence of Christ.
  1. The moving of the day of rest from Saturday to Sunday.
It may not sound like a big deal, until you realize how important the Sabbath was for the Jewish people. To move it from Saturday to Sunday was a very radical decision and could only be conceived of if Christ had risen from the dead.
  1. What other options are there? Was Christ mad/possessed, just a straight up liar, not real?
None of those options can be true. A mad person doesn’t help others by healing them and proclaiming charity. Christ preached peace and love. That’s the opposite of a mad or possessed person.

Christ certainly wasn’t a liar. If he was, he wouldn’t be a “good moral teacher” as some nonbelievers like to claim he was. No liar is willing to go through flogging, carrying a cross and Crucifixion for absolutely no reason. And he knew his Crucifixion would happen from the start of his mission. Christ would not have attracted so many followers before his Passion had he not had some credibility to back up his claim of being God Almighty.

And finally, Christ certainly was real. To think otherwise is almost insane. Considering how interwoven ideas of the Old Testament, such as the Suffering Servant, are fit in with the story of Jesus, and this done by ordinary men like St. John, and how Jesus’ followers became so numerous in Judea, it is impossible not to consider him a real person, especially with nonChristian documentation that Jesus existed.

These are probably the most convincing aspects for me. Hope this helped at least a little. 🙂

Is William Lane Craigs arguments consistent with The Roman Catholic Church?

I heard him talk about the conversion of James as being special because “he was the brother of Jesus” but James was not the brother of Jesus, he was only his cousin.
Although he is a Protestant, that doesn’t mean he is always wrong. Most of his arguments are consistent with Catholic Church, such as the Kalam Cosmological Argument. He doesn’t have to be Catholic to prove the historicity of the Resurrection.😃

God Bless!

Would the apostles have been willing to die just for a legend?

My friend is not questioning the resurrection of Jesus just that he did not raise/rise? in the body he was crucified in?

This from her book You can live forever in paradise on earth page 145-146

“But since the apostle Thomas was able to put his hand into the hole in Jesus’ side, does that not show that Jesus was raised from the dead in the same body that was nailed to the cross? No, for Jesus simply materialized or took on a fleshly body, as angels had done in the past. In order to convince Thomas of who He was, He used a body with wound holes. He appeared, or seemed to be fully human, able to eat and drink, just as did the angels that Abraham once entertained.”

Jesus is not an angel. The above statement is almost laughable to me. How do I refute it?.

The book goes on to say that Jesus assumed other bodies when he appeared to Mary at the tomb and the 2 men on the Emmanus(spelling) road.

Thanks
