They haven’t got anything new so might as well dredge up something. That dead horse hasn’t been beaten enough yet.

When the Discovery Channel aired a TV documentary last year raising the possibility that archeologists had found the family tomb of Jesus Christ in the hills behind Jerusalem, it caused a huge backlash among Christians. The claim, after all, challenged one of the cornerstones of Christian faith — that Jesus, after his crucifixion, rose bodily to heaven in his physical form.
 
Unnnghhhh… die! die die! This dead horse just keeps going!

Kinda reminds me of that part from Me, Myself and Irene when he’s trying to kill that cow.

These are “Christ deniers” and will not stop. They prey on the “soft” believers.

Jesus was crucified and died; that is fact. There will be more so-called “dicoveries” don’t expect them to end; it is a sign of the times.

That guy the “Naked Scientist” is a charlatan. He is well-funded by those that want to disavow Christ’s Resurrection.

Kinda feel sorry for the poor soul.
 
As much as I enjoy many of these history - discovery type “documentaries”, One thing I do not do, is get the teaching about my faith from these. When I see these, I do not watch them.

I watched a program on this subject last year. Bottom line ~ guys named “Jesus” were abundant in the time of Christ. There was no conclusive evidence to support the idea that they found the tomb of the family of the individual we know as Jesus Christ. I’m sure the title attracted a lot of attention, and will continue to do so. But that’s about it.
 
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t there a sister of the Virgin Mary (also named Mary) who had a son with a similiar spelling to the name “Jesus”?

The BVM’s sister was Mary Cleophas. Not sure of her son’s name; maybe we can Google it.
 
In the research I have done, rather quickly, it appears more likely that Mary Cleophas was the sister in law of Our Lady. There is scholarly disagreement about the relationship and there is nothing definitive either way. It is not unusual for a sister in law to be referred to as “sister”.

Regardless of the exact relationship to Our Lady, Mary Cleophas appears to have had several sons, none of them named Jesus. But at the time of Our Lord, there were many Miriams/Marys (Miriam being their language equivalent of Mary) and many males named Jesus. There were also lots of Josephs, James, etc. That someone would find a family tomb with Mary/Miriam, Joseph and Jesus in it would not be remarkable. All this TV show does is make something sensational about something that is very likely just an ordinary tomb of an ordinary family living and dying in the 1st Century.

**If you get the opportunity to acquire ACE’s book “The Life of the Blessed Virgin Mary” you will be filled with wonder. It’s as if ACE was in the midst of the the BVM’s nuclear family along with other relatives and friends.

I seem to recall that the “Tomb of Jesus” was debunked not long after its airing by the Naked Archeologist. There were engravings on the ossuaries that were disproven because of fraud/forgeries.

The Naked Archeologist is a charlatan who goes about wearing a face of “objectivity” to denigrate the Son of God.

Yes, he has some probings into Old Testament digs but IMO, that is only a diversion. He does NOT effort to disprove the Old Testament sites but does his best to “disprove” Jesus as to who He is…the Son of God who rose from the dead. **

And yes, you are right, the guy who calls himself the Naked Archeologist appears to be all about proving the truth about all things Jewish, and all about proving that all things Christian are false. This is a reflection of his personal bias since he is Jewish. But he did cover, in one of his programs, the forgery on an ossuary that supposedly linked the ossuary to Jesus.
 
It should also be noted that this so-called archeologist is in fact only a journalist and not an archeologist. He seems to often annoy the true archeologists that he interviews with silly, stupid remarks and questions. MelanieAnne is correct when she says he makes every effort to disprove Christian beliefs.
 
Well it is Lent, so it’s time to come up with something to harrass Christians with & try to debunk their faith.

If there are no new “miraculous” discoveries, they’ll have to resurrect old ones…

The Naked Archeologist’s mission is to plant seeds of doubt in the Christian believer and to buttress the denials of the unbelievers in Jesus. IMO, that Chanel is a base for casting doubt on Christianity. “Satan never sleeps,” they say.

I guess they are trying to tell us that Easter MUST BE coming up pretty soon…:mad:
 
Mary Clopas and Mary Cleophas are different spellings of the same name. When you are trying to “translate” names from other languages, that sometimes happens.

However her name is spelled and in whatever way she was related to Our Lady, there is no record of that Mary having a son named Jesus, which is how her name came up in the first place. So I think we can put the whole question of Mary Clopas/Cleophas aside in consideration of this matter of the tomb.

But since, in that time period, many women were named Mary/Miriam (Miriam is considered the same name as Mary in the language of the time) and many men were named Jesus, it would not be unusual for there to be a family tomb of that time period that has individuals with these names buried there. Even if such a tomb exists, and even if it is authentic and the names were not forged (a whole lotta “ifs” here!) there is still no valid evidence to connect such persons with Our Lady and her Son Jesus Christ.

There’s no reason to concern ourselves any further about this matter.

“It’s nice to get some good news from Israel,” said
Barry Freedman, executive director of Americans for a Safe Israel
(AFSI), which was hosting Shomron Regional Council spokesman David
Ha’Ivri, who came to New York to provide an update on the rebuilding
efforts at Joseph’s Tomb.

In October 2000, shortly after the Second Itafada
erupted, Joseph’s Tomb was destroyed. Since then, local Jewish leaders
have made efforts to restore access to the tomb, and promote its
rebuilding.
