“protestant” (lower-case ‘p’): A person who protests against something; a protester, an objector.
Matthew 23: Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2 “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4 They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.

Um… no.

Jesus believed in the real presence of Christ and venerated Mary 😃

Matthew 23:1-4:

“1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2 “**The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. **But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4 They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.”

Does this sound like a “protestant” to you???

Jesus recognized the teaching authority of the religious leaders, and advocated obedience. The protestants refused the teaching authority and broke away. There is a difference between recognizing flaws in your leaders, and rejecting their authority.

Right, but he objected to their actions, not their authority to teach, as can be seen from the Scripture above.

Jesus did not protest or object to the teachings of the Pharisees nor to their authority to teach. He objected to the fact that they, themselves, did not walk the talk. BIG difference. Protestants reject both the teachings and the authority of the Catholic Church to teach.

I repeat:

Jesus was also a Jew. Should we all become Jews? You are purposefully playing word games here and missing the substance of what Christ said.

Can’t a Jew “protest” the acts of other Jews? Isn’t that what the Prophets did, continually, without fail?

I’m trying to show a common foundation that connects Protestantism with Catholicism (both are “protestant”), and yet no one wants to see that connection.😃

Because there is none. The Catholic Church was founded by Christ and given the authority of Christ. It is the original against which the Protestans protest. Protestants do not protest against the actions of individual Catholics anymore than Catholics do. What makes them Protestant is the rejection of both the teachings and the teaching authority of the Church Christ founded.

There are a lot of official born and raised “Protestants” who actually think like Catholics if someone would tell them. I know I was one:) There are also many born and raised as Catholics who think like the CAF stereotype of a Protestant:(

Protestants don’t necessarily stand in active opposition to the Church. They just don’t see the uniqueness of Rome. They’ve been taught poorly.

You’re referring to ‘big-P’ Protestant. This thread is about ‘small-p’ protestant. Jesus was not Protestant, but He certainly was/is protestant.

Jesus was certainly no protestant; everyone wants to paint Jesus as this liberal reformer to Judaism, but that could not be farther from the truth. Jesus is the prophetic interpreter of the torah, the messiah, the word of God, and should not be reduced to the title of reformer or liberal which is such a misguided way to view His ministry.

I always thought Jesus was not the prophetic interperter of the Torah, he was the Prophecy: God Incarnate as a man, of whom the Torah prophecies foretold. I also don’t view his life as a mere ministry; he came to establish the New Covenant and replace the old one. This means he was not merely correcting the Pharisees, he was replacing them.

Right, but he didn’t protest against them. He pointed out that they were hypocrites and were not good people, but he did not protest against them. If he protested against them he would tell the people not to do anything they said, in which he says the exact opposite in this passage:

1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2 “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4 They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.

Jesus objected against their ways, not their words. Protestants objected against us for everything. And objection does not mean protestant. He didn’t protest them in the slightest, he simply said that they did not practice what they preached, and not to act like them. They were still sound in scripture (Although they forgot a few verses as Jesus points out from time to time), and they were still fit to preach. Jesus did not object them, he simply warned the people not to be like them. This is not in any essence protesting of any sort. Trust me, I’ve been to a few March For Life’s, he did not protest them with his words.

“Reformer”, “liberal”, are not part of the definition of a “protestant”.

Again, I quote:

“protestant” (lower-case ‘p’): A person who protests against something.

Jesus protested against the hypocritical actions of many, not just Pharisees:

Mark 11:15ff:
15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’c]? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’d]

Well, I will stand up and protest against many things happening in our world, including the conduct of some of our bishops and priests in the recent past. That does not make me a Protestant. Jesus did not protest against Judaism, he fulfilled it. As I said previously, you are doing nothing more than playing with words here. We are on a religious forum and therefore when you speak of “protestant” it must be taken in the religious context of the word.

Again, this thread is not about “Protestants”. It’s about being “protestant”.
