The word “Protestant” was coined to refer to certain German princes and city governments who in 1529 “protested” being told by the Emperor and the “Reichstag” (the body representing the princes and cities of the Holy Roman Empire as a whole) to stop introducing “evangelical” reforms (i.e., reforms based on the ideas of Luther and others who broadly agreed with him). It had nothing at all to do with Luther “protesting” Catholic teaching. That’s simply an “urban legend.” The term soon lost its original meaning and simply became a religio-political label.Jesus did protest so in a way he was a “protestant” but that’s not the point how do you think Martin Luther earned this name. He protested the Catholic Church created his own and replace scripture with blasphemous things.
Arguments based on its etymology are thus thoroughly bogus.
