Jesus's claims to divinity?

It’s disheartening to see that this thread was hijacked to be about the issue of the Papacy and everything else when it was originally about Jesus’ divinity. Islamic apologists are going to great lengths to attack Jesus’ divinity and we’re bickering among ourselves so much that we can’t even stick to one issue.

Back on topic, if anyone is even paying attention anymore…

Today’s Gospel reading Matthew 28:8-15, even when followed to the end of St Matthew’s Gospel account in Chapter 28 really sums this up nicely, but there is a great deal more. Another place where people pay homage to Jesus is the story of the ten lepers, where one returns to worship and he asks,
Luk 17:17 Then said Jesus, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine?
Luk 17:18 Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?”
The man who was healed was worshiping Jesus and Jesus equated this with worship of God. The explicit statements that he’s looking for from a modern context are not really there. This needs to be built from Scripture showing a consistency not only in the passages that support, but also in those that seem to contradict.
There is a great difference between bickering and presenting an argument in support and defense of Christ, and one would do well to keep these two straight. To not know the difference is sadly to cheapen a reasoned defense of God by labeling it falsely. The issue, as it so often is, is about authority to teach. If you don’t have this, then you don’t have the correct teachings about Christ. One supports the other, and leads to a proper understanding of Christ’s divinity. Christ established these things, and it is because of Him, that the Church has authority to teach about Him.

Since whole households were baptized, this includes children and babies.
Early Christian writings including the Bible support the baptism of infants:
Show me in the Word of God.
Matthew 28:19-20 " Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen."
This baptism is that of the Holy Ghost which the apostles gave with the laying on of hands. It is not water baptism.

Water is the substance used in order to baptize. Water is not merely symbolic. It is the means which Jesus uses to remove both Original Sin and our personal sins from our souls at the time of our baptisms.
Why do believers want to rob salvation of the blood that saves them? Do you not understand the importance of the blood. Without the blood, there would be not remission of sins. What is more important, water or blood? The church for too long has turned it’s back on the blood of the lamb. I rebuke all who do this. It is time to change this. For the power is in the blood of the lamb.

Heb. 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

Acts 20:28 Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the assembly of the Lord and God which he purchased with his own blood.

Romans 3:25 whom God set forth to be an atoning sacrifice, through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness through the passing over of prior sins, in God’s forbearance;

Ephesians 1:7 in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,

Ephesians 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off are made near in the blood of Christ.

Colossians 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

Colossians 1:20 and through him to reconcile all things to himself, by him, whether things on the earth, or things in the heavens, having made peace through the blood of his cross.

Hebrews 9:12 nor yet through the blood of goats and calves, but through his own blood, entered in once for all into the Holy Place, having obtained eternal redemption.

Hebrews 9:13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled, sanctify to the cleanness of the flesh: (WEB KJV WEY ASV BBE DBY WBS YLT NAS RSV NIV)
Hebrews 9:14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Hebrews 12:24 to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better than that of Abel.

Hebrews 13:12 Therefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people through his own blood, suffered outside of the gate.

1 Peter 1:2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, that you may obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with his blood: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.

1 Peter 1:19 but with precious blood, as of a faultless and pure lamb, the blood of Christ;

1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.

Revelation 7:14 I told him, “My lord, you know.” He said to me, "These are those who came out of the great tribulation. They washed their robes, and made them white in the Lamb’s blood.

Revelation 12:11 They overcame him because of the Lamb’s blood, and because of the word of their testimony. They didn’t love their life, even to death.

If that’s the case, why do you even need Scriptures? So, you didn’t provide a legitimate answer.
All that the spirit of truth gives us will be verified through the Word of God.

Are you completely in the dark about Catholicism? What problem do you have with Christ and what He established in Baptism and the Eucharist?

It is all about the Lamb of God. The mass is a representation of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, the merits of which are applied to our lives in our time in the Eucharist, His Body and Blood.

Remember the two steps? You’re missing step 1 again, by really badly falsifying the teachings in Catholicism. Your posts like I’m responding to, are often a truth free zone.

All that the spirit of truth gives us will be verified through the Word of God.
So, how does that support what you said about how you know the Scriptures are true, because the Holy Spirit lives in you. From what I’ve seen, you don’t display evidence of being led by the Holy Spirit by what you write in your posts. Therefore, your misquotes and falsehoods are a product of some other spirit, like that of personal pride. This is quite opposed to the Spirit of God, which asks of us humility. For your own good, I recommend big time examination of this “spirit” leading you… from the fruits of your writings, it is most assuredly not God’s Holy Spirit.

If you attend church on Sundays, this is due to the Catholic Church using the day of resurrection as the Holy Day of rest instead of the Jewish Sabbath.
Do not compare the early church with the CC today. They are not the same.

The early church worshiped on Sunday, long before somebody decided to call the church the catholic church.

You can ridicule me all you please. It matters not. The simple fact is you cannot debunk what I have written. And know this, that all I have written in defending the gospel of Jesus Christ makes all who read it and ignore it accountable on the day of judgement.

The CC did not have the authority to change the baptisms from how God established through his Holy Apostles.

As for the trinity doctrine, I believe it has fallen under theologians and philosophers interpretation.

Men are always attempting to complicate the simplicity of God.

Yet, although I view the Godhead with different eyes, here is the only question that seperates our views.

It is written that Jesus Christ is the Word of God. So did Jesus exist prior to God speaking him into existance? Does a word truly exist if not spoken?

I believe that this is an area that is left in God’s hands, not man’s.

Anyway, it is really wonderful talking with all of you. Just know that I love you and will pray for you.

The Church today teaches the same truths that the early Church did. It is larger and some doctrines have been developed and formalized in the face of heresies. Giving it the Greek name for universal didn’t change one thing about the Church, but is descriptive of the nature of God’s one Church.

To shine the light of truth on things you say, is to automatically debunk them. You are your own worst witness.

The Catholic Church was established by Christ on the rock of Peter with His Apostles as Bishops. This same Church has continued by Apostolic Succession to this day.

The correct teaching is that Christ existed before time, all three persons of the Godhead being eternal. The Father is the first Person. Jesus the Christ is the second Person, and the Holy Spirit is the Third Person. Christ is God and not created, but begotten of the Father. Nothing was created without Christ. Does it really make sense to try and define an instant in time when the Father was without the Son and the Spirit? Only in man’s limited ability would we try to do this, and it would be arrogance.

God is infinite, so how is it that He is simple as you have tried to present?

I’ll pray for you, that you know the truth, and the truth will set you free of the things which keep you from seeing.

This is just your opinion. It is not fact. Normal Baptism uses water:

Baptism: a baptizing or being baptized; specif., the ceremony or sacrament of admitting a person into Christianity or a specific Christian church by immersing the individual in water or by pouring or sprinkling water on the individual

Dictionaries refute your belief. 😃

I already gave you many Scriptures which pertain to Baptism. Please re-read them in my previous post. You are “untaught” so you misinterpret the Scriptures about Baptism. (2 Peter 3:16)

Then explain two simple scriptures.

John 5:26 and 1 Cor. 15:24-28

You at least acknowledged Jesus was born of the Father. Yet, John 5:26 says he is a life unto himself.

I have not once said Jesus is not God. I believe his Father gave him the fullness of the Godhead, all authority to carry out the will of the Father. Yet, there will come a time when the Son gives back the authority unto the Father as spoken in 1 Cor. 15:24-28.

Yes, but the sprinkling of blood is accomplished by Baptism! We cannot be literally sprinkled with His Blood so He uses the waters of Baptism as the means to wash away our sins.

Hebrews 10:21-22 “and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.”

Acts 22:16 “And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’”

Colossians 2:11-12 “In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.”

Titus 3:5 “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,”

This “washing of regeneration” (spiritual rebirth) is Baptism! Spiritual rebirth is what is meant by being “born again.” We are born again by water and the word (baptism).

Ephesians 5:25-26 “Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,”

John 5:26-27 “For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, 27 and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.”

Jesus has life in Himself because He was also given a human nature in addition to His Divine Spiritual Nature. His Father does not have a human nature. The Father is a Divine Spirit with a Divine Nature so He has life in Himself and the Son has life in the Father also because they are one. (John 10:30) But the Son also has an incorruptible human body forever so He also has life in Himself which the Father does not have.

1 Corinthians 15:24-26 “Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. 25 For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. 26 The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.”

2 Corinthians 5:10 “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.”

After He delivers His kingdom to His Father (according to His Father’s Will), then those persons who are of His kingdom live with Him forever. (John 5:30) Death and corruption are no more. He delivers His kingdom to His Father because They are one. It is both His kingdom and the Father’s kingdom because They are one God, but only Jesus could suffer and die for Their kingdom so He delivers His kingdom to His Father in heaven. He does not lose His status as King of kings and Lord of lords when He delivers His kingdom to His Father. He is instead sharing it completely in union with Him. (John 10:30, Revelation 17:14) Jesus’ Divine eternal role in the Godhead is to always do His Father’s Will.

Pax, you insist on lumping the baptism that saves us with water baptism. They are two seperate events.

You try to refute how critical the blood of Jesus is to the faith. Water baptism saves no one.

Water baptism is symbolic of the baptism that saves a man and that baptism is blood. For Christ himself washes our sins away, baptizing us with his blood.

There are three baptisms spoken of in the NT. Salvation, water, and Holy Spirit are the baptisms. Yet, with out salvation, being baptized into Christ through his blood, the other baptisms would be useless.

Yes, I keep insisting that Baptism washes away Original Sin and our personal sins from our souls at the time of our Baptisms. It is not merely a symbol. It actually removes Original Sin and our personal sins from our souls at the time of our baptisms.

Did you have Jesus’ actual literal blood poured over you in order to wash away your sins in order to become His disciple? Of course not! So, instead of real literal blood poured over us, God instead removes our sins using the waters of Baptism as the means in which to apply the merits of Jesus’ Sacrifice to our souls and so Baptism literally washes our sins away.

Indeed, Jesus uses the waters of Baptism to apply the merits of His blood Sacrifice to our souls. Baptism regenerates our souls spiritually from being enemies of God to friendship with God. (Romans 5) We are born again through the waters of Baptism. I have given you many Scripture verses which pertain to this. Your refusal to believe this truth does not negate this truth: Baptism is the Sacrament that Jesus was speaking of when He said that we must be “born again.”

John’s baptism was for repentance. Those who received John’s baptism still had to be baptized with Jesus’ baptism. He commanded it, so we do it.

Mark 1:4 “John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.”

John’s baptism was for repentance and it is a precursor for Jesus’ baptism which does remit sins:

Acts 13:24 “after John had first preached, before His coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.”

Acts 19:2-5 "2 he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?
So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”
3 And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied."

First, they were baptized with John’s baptism of repentance. Next, they are baptized with Jesus’ Sacramental Baptism which remits sins and they are then confirmed in the faith with the laying on of hands which we now call the Sacrament of Confirmation.

This is why Jesus COMMANDS that the Apostles go out and make persons His disciples by baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to observe all the things that He has commanded them. We are made Jesus’ disciples through Baptism because Baptism washes away our sins. (Matthew 28:19-20)

Ephesians 5:25-27 “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.”

“Sanctify and cleanse with the washing of water by the word” is how we are “born again” through Baptism.

It is not merely a symbol. It is a Sacrament and it actually gives us grace. It sanctifies us (makes us holy) and it is the means by which we become Jesus’ disciples.

Yet, you miss one small point where it says the Son will be subject unto the Father. If the Father and Son remain one God forever, why then does it say the Son is subject unto the Father so that the Father is all in all?
Hi HICIT, 🙂

Some things in Scripture are hard to understand; Peter tells us this fact in 2 Peter 3:16 and Luke in Acts 8:26-39. I don’t know all the answers either! 😊
**
There are three separate equal Divine Persons, All three are of the same substance, which we call one “God”** but They have different roles when They act together as one “God.” First, God the Father has the Thought (Will) of what “God” (Blessed Trinity) wants to do, then God the Son Jesus speaks the Word (Command) of “God” so that the Will of “God” can be done. Then, God the Holy Spirit (Power) who is the (Action) of “God” proceeds from the Father and the Son and completes the Three Person’s (God’s) Divine plan by fulfilling the Father’s Will and the Son’s Word. So, we have the Thought, Word, and Action of God; or put another way, the Will, Word, and Power of God. They are one God because They are all of the same substance which is what makes Them “one” God. They share equally a Divine Nature which is Spirit.

So, for example, let’s say that “God” (the Blessed Trinity) wants to create light, so God the Father thinks, using His Will, “Let us create light.” Then the Son will command using His Word,“Let there be light.” The Holy Spirit then uses His Power to actually create light out of nothing.

So, Jesus is subject to His Father’s Will because that is His role in the Godhead.

1 Corinthians 8:5-6 “For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords), 6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.”

From the Father are all things but all things are also through Jesus Christ. This is how Their relationship works.

John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”

Here, Jesus is explaining that the Father will send the Holy Spirit in Jesus’ name. This is the Thought or Will of God who begins the Plan of God which is to send the Holy Spirit to Jesus’ Church. Jesus asks His Father to send the Holy Spirit to His Church on earth. So, the Father sends the Holy Spirit in Jesus’ name because Jesus asked His Father to send the Holy Spirit to His Church on earth.

John 15:26 “But when the Helper comes,** whom I shall send to you from the Father**, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.”

Here, Jesus is explaining that He will send the Holy Spirit to them from His Father. Jesus’ Command or Word sends the Holy Spirit from His Father to them. First, His Father Willed that the Holy Spirit go to Jesus’ Church on earth. The Holy Spirit proceeds from Jesus’ Father through Jesus to His Church on earth. So the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son, which is stated in the Nicene Creed: beginningcatholic.com/catholic-nicene-creed.html

We cannot explain the Blessed Trinity (God) very well because our finite minds cannot fully comprehend Him. The Father is “all in all” because the three Persons of the Blessed Trinity are all of the same substance and the Son’s role in the Godhead is to be subject to His Father’s Will.

My husband and I have an acquaintance who is a fallen-away Catholic. He recently claimed that “Jesus never said he was God”. We’re sure this is not true, but would appreciate some citations…
There are oodles and oodles of clear cut passages as an example: “the father and I are one.”

Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us. “I have been with you so long and you still don’t recognize me?”

“In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.”

You get the picture. There’s others on this thread with specific locations etc.

Did you have Jesus’ actual literal blood poured over you in order to wash away your sins in order to become His disciple? Of course not! This is contrary to the Word of God.

1 Peter 1:19 but with precious blood, as of a faultless and pure lamb, the blood of Christ;

From the Father are all things but all things are also through Jesus Christ. This is how Their relationship works.
No man cometh unto the Father, but through the Son.

There is not one shread of proof that says Jesus, our heavenly Father, and the Holy Spirit are the same, but seperate beings.

My God does not have a split personality.

My God is the Holy Spirit who has given his Son who is a life unto himself his Holy Spirit without measure, thus making him God till all things are fulfilled and he offers up the kingdom unto the Father. At which time his authority of the Godhead is removed and he is subject unto the Father, for there is only one God. In this way, God will be all in all.
