This thread is about refugees, not illegal immigrants.
Enforcing the rule of law on immigration is clearly the best way to manage fears. But HOW to manage fear? That is the question. By catering to the fears of people, feeding them, or by showing people that their fears are unfounded? I choose the latter.
We’re not speaking of immigrants but refugees. There’s an important distinction, especially from the perspective of the Church’s social teachings.meltzerboy2:![]()

How do you imagine anything else would be required? People are objecting to it not being followed.
I’ve been reading just the opposite. http://fortune.com/2017/08/08/immigration-worker-shortage-rotting-crops/The number of refugees the US can readily sustain is also impacted by illegal immigrants arriving and competing for public services and low skilled entry work.
I’ve poked around for data on this and didn’t find much. Are you able to provide any? This is a hard figure to quantify because we’re already dealing with people living off the government radar. We have seen dramatic increases in illegal migration in recent decades.
I’m actually pleased that my state addressed this dilemma in a meaningful way. Oregon House passes 'Ban the Box' bill, aimed at helping ex-cons get jobs - oregonlive.comI work part time with ‘at risk’ Foster kids and have worked with parolees attempting to reintegrate after their time behind bars. These are the people who are lowest in desirability by employers but have the greatest need for employment. I want a tight labor market for entry work, so they can become productive contributors. It’s only with the recent tight labor market of the last couple years that we are finally seeing significant drops in black unemployment, especially among black teens.
I can assure you that between multiple interviews over a two-year period and invasive background checks all the way down to fingerprints and retina scans, they are being well vetted.
Like being told when they have to bake a cake? They only want the opportunity to practice their own religion without fear or intimidation,
Make sure you tell that to the Palestinians and Native Americans. They should not have let fear get in the way, should they?Similar arguments were made against the Irish and Italians (anti-Catholics), against the Japanese and Germans (concentration camps in the U.S.), against the Jews (anti-Semitism), against Mexicans (Trumpism).
A significant number of the immigrants flooding Europe failed to qualify as refugees, by UN standards. We’re not speaking of immigrants but refugees. There’s an important distinction, especially from the perspective of the Church’s social teachings.
The OP asked whether the US is morally obligated to take in refugees. As refugees (or immigrants) cannot cross the Mediterranean to reach the US, we do not face the kind of influx with which Europe has to contend.gracepoole:![]()
