Jewish Refugees vs Syrian Refugees

The OP asked whether the US is morally obligated to take in refugees. As refugees (or immigrants) cannot cross the Mediterranean to reach the US, we do not face the kind of influx with which Europe has to contend.
As I noted, I fully support taking in legit refugees.

Incidentally, our problem comes from the south instead of the Mediterranean. There are many claims that the illegals entering the US are refugees really.

From the OP: “So there are a lot of people who support banning all immigrants from places like Syria, Iraq, and other war-torn countries. Most of these people are in desperate need of refuge and help. Does the US have a moral obligation to help these people out?”

There’s nothing about Mexicans here. Seems clear that the OP didn’t intend for this discussion to expand to include illegal immigrants “from the south.”

The 78 suspected perpetrators in Germany were not from Syria but Algeria and Morocco and were not there as vetted or even legal refugees. Reports of three refugees in Cologne attacks 'wrong' - The Local

Sweden’s situation is quoted out of context by the Right. http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-m...-statistics-say-about-immigration-and-sweden/

Refugees are made in the image and likeness of God, a simple fact that gets overlooked by entirely too many Catholics.
So it sounds like illegal migrants are implicated, not legit refugees.

Your Politifact analysis was defective, since it never broke out crimes caused by immigrants vs the whole of sweden. Whether or not the subgroup is problematic remains buried in the mass of all reporting.

There are many articles reporting increases in gang related violence, and this is primarly linked to 1st and 2nd gen immigrants

The Politifact article did correctly report the increased ease of reporting rape in Sweden. Better access to reporting will inevitably give the appearance of increased rape. Countries with lower figures may have a more restrictive definition of rape, greater stigma for the victims, etc. But I’ll read through your links. 🙂

The idea that “they’re all the same” is inherently false.

When the Irish and Italians were coming to America, it was expected that they would assimilate and participate in society.

That is not happening today.

The politifact article actually confirmed the immigrant crime issue is real, but tried to minimize it and failed to numerate the problem
Generally, there’s a certain over-representation of people with immigrant background in crime statistics, but that tends to be closely related to high levels of unemployment, poverty, exclusion, low language and other skills, Selin said.
I don’t dispute the commentary, it just emphasizes why immigrant numbers should be at manageable levels where you can focus resources to integrate the new arrivals and find them a productive place in their new home.

Don’t forget the “Irish Need not Apply” signs from back in the day. Also, the concept of the drunk and/or violent Irishman. Heck, Notre Dame still uses an Irishman in a fighting stance. As a person with a good amount of Irish blood, I’m offended by Notre Dame’s logo and mascot.

Gotta love the hand grenade in the street. Proving once again that firearms aren’t needed to kill people.

Perhaps you are a Holocaust survivor and can speak of the situation of Jewish refugees in the 1930s and 40s, so if you are, you may chose to ignore this comment.

However, telling a Syrian that his miseries are “different” from those of the past doesn’t seem accurate or compassionate.
I agree nations need to open their hearts to these poor “refugees” perhaps Israel should take a few million of them as citizens, surely a people that has dealt with persecution in the past would be highly sympathetic to the plight of these (mostly fighting age men) refugees!

Open borders for Israel. :hugs: 👍

Israel does accept many Jewish refugees, a good fit for their culture

Perahaps your ire should be focused on other rich ME countries that largely share the same faith with Syrian refugees. They are in an ideal situation to accept AND integrate them into their societies.

I once posted a series of news stories out of Europe about the refugees and replaced Muslim with white male Chrisitan and Europe with Mecca and the Middle East and I was accused of pushing out Stormfront talking points.

You can see the obvious double standard.

There is a pretty obvious obligation to help, but this does not mean creating chaos by bringing in millions of people without a sound legal system in place.

A better solution is to set-up no-fly zones and areas under international military protection. Of course, it’d be nice if Saudi Arabia actually helped as they do have the space for these refugees.
