Bob, I don’t mind that you are asking. I tend to be a little hesitant to share the details of what happened because there are naysayers out there who don’t believe that supernatural things can happen, and the particular thing that happened to me is not universally accepted among Christians as being valid. That said, I will tell you what happened:
(edited to save space - 6000 character limit)
I was praying/crying out loud in English (totally girlie meltdown) when I felt a “presence” in my stomach behind my belly button. It was golf-ball sized and I can only describe it as if I had swallowed a ball of light. It started moving up my torso and into my throat. Then it was in my mouth, then behind my teeth, and then it came out of my mouth…
At this point I was no longer speaking in English, but I was speaking in some sort of tongue. It sounded very ancient, like something that would be appropriate to be spoken in biblical times, or in front of the wailing wall. Prior to this happening to me I had vaguely aware of Pentecostals speaking in tongues, and I thought it was something that was totally made up by people working themselves up into a frenzy of pretend-religiousity.
I was incredibly skeptical (afterall I didn’t believe in miracles at the time, and definitely not the Holy Spirit.)
Immediately after this happened, I Googled “speaking in tongues” and the first hit that came up was a paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 14:22 which said:
*
Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers so that they may believe*
I almost hopped away from my computer in fright when I read that. But I felt I was getting a very clear message. The passage was from the NT, not the OT. So it was in a Jesus-affirming context. I reasoned that these words had been written almost 2000 years before I was born…but somehow, they were the first thing that I found on Google after this very weird experience had happened to me. On top of it, the passage spoke DIRECTLY to my situation, basically telling me that I had been given tongues in order to believe.
But God wasn’t done with me as I had a lot more to say. I was speaking, and even singing (and I am not a singer!) in tongues for most of the rest of the day as well as the next.
I can still speak in tongues whenever I want to, but I only use it as a private prayer language and don’t use it in public.
There is more…I joined a Protestant church around the time this happened and went through the new members class. They said I could get baptized at the new member ceremony, or I could wait as they were going to do baptisms at the beach later in the year (I live in SoCal, where the water is warm enough for this.). They said that they didn’t have a date scheduled, but that they would let us know later in the year once a date had been set.
Fast forward about 7 months, when we were told that the beach baptisms were scheduled for a Sunday, Oct 1, 2006. The pastor stood in front of the congregtion and told everyone that they were invited, but to make sure to not forget that there would be no evening service that night because “our Jewish friends from [the temple down the street] will be using our sanctuary to celebrate the Yom Kippur!”
I was shocked. Since I was a secular Jew I didn’t really pay attention to the calendar of Jewish holidays. But I was going to be baptized on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year, the Day of Atonement. It was the cherry on the whipped cream on the hot fudge on the sundae for me! I felt that God really had a sense of humor and that he was really sending me a message that I had indeed made the correct choice.
Anyway, that is what happened.
