The Shia have proven themselves to be the more tolerant of the two branches of Islam in recent times. They have shown remarkable restraint in the face of countless murderous attacks by Wahhabists in Iraq, Pakistan,Syria, etc. Imams have generally speaking, not allowed there followers to conduct retaliatory attacks on Sunnis after major suicide bombings, and in the days immediately after the 9-11 attacks, only two places in the Islamic world saw mass vigil marches in support of the victims. Those two marches were conducted by Shias in Tehran and Karachi. The Shia also seem to be less aligned and controlled by the US government and Western interests, which I think is a definite point in there favor. That is not to imply, that living in a Shia dominated country would be any kind of picnic, but as Iranian born US political advisor and author Vali Nasr has pointed in his excellent book The Shia Revival. The Shia are the more tolerant of the two branches of Islam
