President Obama notified Congress Monday that he is sending up to 200 more U.S. troops to Iraq to provide additional security to the U.S. Embassy, its support facilities, and the Baghdad International Airport.

The new injection of manpower brings the total number of U.S. personnel sent to Iraq to deal with the recent crisis to approximately 800.

“This force is deploying for the purpose of protecting U.S. citizens and property, if necessary, and is equipped for combat. This force will remain in Iraq until the security situation becomes such that it is no longer needed,” the President wrote in his letter to Congress.

The additional personnel arrived in Iraq Sunday and Monday and have brought helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles, according to Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby. He said there are also approximately 100 personnel prepositioned in the Central Command region moving to Baghdad to provide security and logistics support.

The president announced earlier this month that he was sending up to 300 military advisors to assist Iraq security forces in combating the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in a non-combat role. So far, 180 of those personnel have arrived in Iraq to help increase intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets for the U.S.

Prior to that, he dispatched 275 military personnel to provide support and security to Americans at the U.S. embassy.

Perhaps there is some reason why I should not regard this as simply putting more Americans in harm’s way without being sufficient to affect the outcome even for them, but at present, I don’t know what that reason is.

And what a pass we have come to that we’re going to be providing auxiliaries to Iran. If we knew, for instance, that the Sunni tribal leaders or the Kurds desired this, I could understand. But to do it for Iran’s sock puppet Maliki?
 
…and the Baghdad International Airport…which was coming from day one, should have been immediately secured. Obama has to drop it on you slowly, he knows 3/4 of America doesn’t want anything to do with Iraq.

But he’s sending more troops. still not listening to, we the people, congress, and the Bidens and Pelosi’s are still waiving pom-poms at “whatever” Obama states. How many 200-300??

You could best believe the troop numbers are fabricated for the media.

President Obama announced Monday that he is sending approximately 200 American troops to Iraq to reinforce security at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and the Baghdad International Airport, as the country wages a bloody battle against jihadists.

The troops will serve a different mission in Iraq than the 275 advisory troops sent to Iraq earlier this month in response to advances by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant/Syria (ISIS). The additional troops will serve to solely augment security.

Whats is it then? 🤷 The improved intelligence is now requiring more troops to a better understood issue, natural process, this is NOT going to be as easy as suggested.

The Institute for the Study of War produces a daily listing of significant events in Iraq. Here is what they have for today:
  1. Iraqi airstrikes in several part of Mosul against ISIS. In an ambush, unknown gunmen killed three ISIS troops, including one with Afghan nationality.
  2. The Army of the Men of the Naqshbandi Order, also known as JRTN, lauched mortars at ISIS in Diyala province. JRTN is a Baathist/Islamist militia which is opposed to the government in Baghdad.
  3. Anti-government gunmen (including ISIS, JRTN, the Rashidin Army, the Islamic Army, and the Jihad Battalions) are reportedly negotiating with Haditha tribes for peaceful access to Haditha. Expulsion of Iraq’s security forces are a key requirement.
  4. Iraqi Army, positioned outside Fallujah, shelled four areas. Nine civilians were reported killed, along with 15 wounded.
  5. Three Russian Su-25 fighters flew over Baghdad to test their readiness under the supervision of Russian experts.
  6. On June 30, six mortar rounds were launched that the Askari shrine in Samarra. Six civilians were killed, and 23 injured. Also in Samarra, a Sadrist militia arrived. They number between 1000 and 2000.
  7. In Mashahda, north of Baghad, volunteers allied with the government clashed with ISIS forces. Two volunteers were killed, and five injured. Three ISIS troops were wounded.
  8. Four unidentified bodies were discovered in various parts of Baghdad. They are thought to be victims of Shia militias.

Baghdad went from “under no threat of all” last week, to “extreme threat” today. And if Isis lost any ground I can’t see where. Now they are calling for all world radicals to join them in murder, genocide and so forth, and in Gods name, and during Ramadan.

Al Jazeera reports that Shia protesters opposed to the government’s military campaign against Sunnis were fired upon by government troops in Karbala. The protesters are followers of an outspoken Shia cleric named Sarkhi Hasani. Reportedly, 25 were killed when troops opened fire.

Two years ago, his followers repeatedly clashed with supporters of Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani. Sarkhi Hasani is opposed to foreign influence in Iraq, whether American or Iranian. He regards most Shia leaders as too tied to Iran.
 
Here is some additional information about the bloodshed in Karbala:

Up to 45 people were killed in clashes between Iraqi security forces and followers of a radical cleric in the holy Shi’ite city of Karbala on Wednesday, security sources said, signaling divisions among Shi’ite factions as a Sunni insurgency rages.

The clashes erupted when police and army personnel tried to arrest Shi’ite cleric Mahmoud al-Sarkhi around midnight on Tuesday in the southern city of Karbala, an Interior Ministry intelligence officer and a police witness told Reuters.

Security forces said they went to arrest Sarkhi after his supporters started blocking roads and manning checkpoints around his neighborhood in the Shi’ite shrine city, home to the tomb of Imam Hussein, which millions of Shi’ite pilgrims flock to annually.

Last week, the Pentagon delivered 100 new laser-guided Hellfire missiles to Iraq, part of a batch of 500 announced in January. Other pending U.S. arms sales include AH-64 Apache attack helicopters.

Moderate rebels in the middle east? Are those the ones that don’t decapitate you, but only shoot you in the back of the head if you don’t convert to Islam? Sounds great (?) that the USA is giving these guys $500 million dollars while American families are struggling to pay $30K and up for the college education of their children. And how many Americans have been out of work for so long that they have quit looking for jobs? OK. Let the American politicians give more billions and billions of dollars to the rebels in the middle East. It is sure to help the extremist Muslims establish an anti-American caliphate which can wipe out all Christians.
 
ISIS has been destroying shrines and mosques in the area of Mosul.

At least four shrines to Sunni Arab or Sufi figures have been demolished, while six Shiite mosques, or husseiniyahs, have also been destroyed, across militant-held parts of northern Nineveh province, of which Mosul is the capital.

Pictures posted on the Internet by the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group showed the Sunni and Sufi shrines were demolished by bulldozers, while the Shiite mosques and shrines were all destroyed by explosives.

The photographs were part of an online statement titled “Demolishing shrines and idols in the state of Nineveh.”

Local residents confirmed that the buildings had been destroyed and that militants had occupied two cathedrals as well.

Maliki has sacked two top generals, continuing his shake-up of the military.

Military spokesman Lt. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi says Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki signed the papers to retire Lt. Gen. Ali Ghaidan, commander of the army’s ground forces, and Lt. Gen. Mohsen al-Kaabi, the chief of the federal police. Al-Moussawi says both men leave their jobs with their pensions. No replacements have been named.

Last month, al-Maliki retired three generals who had been deployed in Mosul and ordered legal proceedings against them. He also dismissed a brigadier general and ordered his court martial in absentia. He said he planned to retire off or court martial more senior officers, but gave no details.

Al-Maliki has also vowed to bring the full weight of military law, including the execution of deserters, on anyone who is found out to have fled the battle.

The U.S., which once controlled it, is now utterly irrelevant in the central Middle East. I agree with you there. The players are Sunni jihadis and Iran. The former is not well organized but potentially very numerous and supplied with oil money to do their horrible will. The latter are less numerous but are well organized and also supplied with oil money, and every bit as evil.

One fears that someday it may come to nuclear exchanges, and not only between those parties.
