No disrespect to our former VP, but I am sure at his age and being a cradle Catholic he does know very well the grave sin of receiving while in Mortal Sin.
Sure… I suspect he does know whether or not he is in a state of mortal sin… I’m suggesting that you do not, nor does anyone else on this forum… or in that Carolina Church

Ok, I’ll play devil’s advocate. What precedent does this set? How much freedom are priests given to choose who can receive or not? What information are they required to know to arrive at a conclusion to deny someone?

I would suggest that the priest doesn’t know the state of Mr Biden’s soul and should project to the world that he does. It’s sad to see the Eucharist weaponized… it is not a prize for the perfect, but a medicine for the weak.
The priest knows whether or not Mr. Biden has publicly renounced his public support of abortion, which he hasn’t.

I suppose someone who stands on street corner (or in a public protest) with “I support abortion” would qualify, or a politician who openly has pro abortion platform would qualify. If someone is publicly supporting abortion.

Has Mr. Biden publicly repented of supporting laws and fellow Democrats who are in favor of abortion?

The conundrum is that Joe Biden being a public figure and very outspoken in his support of abortion, same sex marriage, etc., it is incumbent upon this priest or any other encountering this particular situation to not create scandal by allowing JB to receive the Euchrist.

How would the priest know for sure if Joe hadn’t changed his stance? What if Joe is waiting for a particular moment (politically) to reveal it? Seems like quite a responsibility to take on.

The priest’s action is well supported by statements from especially P Benedict.
God support this priest and all our priests to be courageous and not conformed to the world.
And prayers for Joe Biden that he might long to conform his actions to the sanctity of human life and come back to the Eucharist.

What if Joe is waiting for a particular moment (politically) to reveal it?
Then Joe should refrain from coming up for communion until he makes such a public revelation. His public support of abortion is still adversely affecting the unborn until he renounces it

The point you cited doesn’t mention mortal sin. It’s talking about cooperation. A public scandal. Does Mr. Biden publicly promote abortion or does he not? That’s all that needs to be asked for this case.

I understand all of that… I would suggest that the priest doesn’t know the state of Mr Biden’s soul and should project to the world that he does. It’s sad to see the Eucharist weaponized… it is not a prize for the perfect, but a medicine for the weak.

Let the one without sin cast the first stone…

Do not judge lest you be judged

You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.

Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?”

Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.

Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.

There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?
Protecting the Eucharist from an unworthy person (which also protects the person) isn’t “weaponizing” it. He who eats and drinks the Body and Blood of Christ without discerning themselves eats and drinks judgement upon themselves. If Joe Biden is going up for communion in spite of his public actions, then he has not discerned himself (or has done so improperly).

The medicine of the soul does no good to the one who rejects Him whom the medicine is.

What if I sprout wings tomorrow.
The priest deals with reality as it is. Good for him.

How would the priest know indeed? That’s Mr. Biden’s difficulty. If he wants to present himself for Holy Communion then he has to publicly repent his public opinions, or it will be scandal for him to take comnuunion.

Difficult to prove entirely. Legality (illegality) of the action does not guarantee the numbers will go down.

We have all done things we are not proud of. I try not to judge others. I have enough of my own sins to worry about.

So how public must it be? Global, National, local?

That wasn’t the point I was making in the statement you quoted from me, my friend. What I was saying is I am sure he knows that:
…receiving…while in mortal sin… is itself a grave sin…
I am a cradle Catholic, brought up in the 80s early 90s of the Church, when they say catechesis was not at it’s best. That was drilled into my head. I am not to receive communion if I am in mortal sin until I go to confession.

As far as what the priest did, he did the right thing. Rather VP Biden personally supports abortion or not, his voting record and what he says is in controversy to Catholic Teaching. As I see it, the priest had no other option, because of the scandal alone, but to deny communion.

This is nothing personal against Joe, I want him to be good. I want him to receive but if in doubt, he should not and neither should the priest have given him the Eucharist. I never said Joe had committed a Sin, is going to hell or anything like that. However, if he is going against Church Teaching he is not in a state to receive.

The Priest also has to be the sheppard to his flock. With a public official like Joe, if he does give him communion then that can cause a scandal amongst his flock. They could perceive that it is ok to hold to beliefs that are against Church teaching and still receive.

But do you sin on the national political stage, all the while getting the benefits of presenting yourself as Catholic? Making observers say “look at those Catholics. What a bunch of hypocrites.”

How public has he been in his support of abortion and fellow Democrats?

How is that different? We all are sinners.
As I said, I take care of my own sins.
Let Mr. Biden take care of his sins.
