It’s not about fearing him. It’s about being discerning and making spiritually edifying decisions, it’s called the garbage in, garbage out principle.

Personally if his doctrines have been condemned by the Church that is enough for me not to listen to him. I realise other Catholics may not agree. 🙂
I understand, but he has been a stepping stone for many, that’s all :o

Yeah, I still like Joel Osteen. 😃

No amount of ranting against him, to me, is going to make me run away from my TV, screaming, so ya can stop now. I enjoy his show for what it is. I don’t expect any Protestant to preach true gospel, but I can take the positivity for what it is.
Dymph,

You have to appreciate entertainment of all types. I really like Reverend Ike…he is entertaining. He is dead but entertaining.

After his death he has this legacy

Joel is streaming nothing new. It is entertaining.

Some preachers are only out for three things - money, fame and power. Even as a Protestant, Joel Osteen gives me the creeps. He screams false prophet. I don’t watch him or read his books.

: Wow- what if he converted?!

I enjoy him from time to time. As long as we are strong in our beliefs- there is nothing or no one to fear. 🙂 I still won’t buy tickets to one of his appearances, but he is not all bad.
He would have to give up too much to convert. He is too much of a big shot to do that.

I would strongly encourage you to listen to what is being taught at the RCIA classes, and to speak with a priest in matters of what you need clarified in your learning. Try not to put too much stock in what T.V. evangelists say, and go to the Mass, that is why it is there for you. So that you can become closer to God. Welcome, and I hope you enjoy the journey you have in coming to know Christ.👍

God Bless,

What do you think… as a Catholic, is it harmful to watch Protestant services like those of Joel Osteen?

I’m in RCIA right now… do you think this would be harmful to my education?

God bless all!
Personally I wouldn’t advise any Protestants to watch either. You may want to do further research but I heard (not positive by what source) that Rick Warren and other prominent Protestant leaders met secretly together in the late 1990’s. The supposed purpose was to redesign the Christian faith. To make it more appealing to the masses. The purpose was to increase numbers by making the messages more pleasing to the ear. Basically, to design a god that the average person would be able to accept.

Now that is hearsay of course since I am not sure where I heard that. But I can say I went to a “bible” study last year which used a book called “Shape” which is written by Erik Rees, an apparent disciple of Rick Warren. The bible scriptures in this book come not from KJV or any common translation but something called “The Message”. “The Message” is supposed to be in modern language, however, I found that on several occations, the translations of scripture in “The Message” did not follow what was in the bible nor did they follow the intent of the particular scripture in the bible (whether KJV or any other).

When I first got my study booklet “Shape” and saw these scriptures in a strange “The Message” format, naturally I looked them up. But like I said, you should research yourself. Good luck.

not to hijack the thread, but does anybdoy knew that joel osteen is the executive producer for the forthcoming movie " mary.mother of the christ", a sequel to “passion of the christ”???

If that is true, which I doubt, it would be troubling, to say the least.

They’ll probably skip the part where Mother Mary says “all generations will call me blessed” :tsktsk:

Joel Osteen is not a bad person and he does have good intensions. It is just that he has bought into this new way of preaching. They feel that if you only teach God is Love, Unconditional Forgiveness, and Prosperity, that you will get more people into church. The belief is that if there is more people in church then more people will go to heaven. But the problem is the same as the contemporary music issue - no substance. Initially, people will go to the church to feel good. Eventually, due to spirtual guidance, the people will loose their faith and there will be even less people in churh than before.

Contemporary Christian music and prosperity preaching should only be used in conjunction with sound gospel preaching. These two usually focus on “Me” rather than God and so have no solid foundation to them. They are like building your house on the sand. The house must be built on the rock.

And the people who follow this movement are in danger of focusing their worship on the god of “Me” rather than to whom it belongs. They also seem to have a devote worship of the man, whether Joel or another charismatic preacher. They have devote followings of these people and yet are worried that we pray to the saints for intersession.

Well, you know what they say about good intentions…Joel Osteen is paving the road to Hell for himself and his followers. If you truly listen to his message, he is distorting the Gospel of Jesus Christ to suit his own ends, which is to get butts in the seats with wallets opened. And never to hurt anyone’s feelings by mentioning SIN!

If not hamful, it would muddle the waters of your eventual entry into Catholicism.

There is nothing that a protestant preacher could say to “improve” on what catholicism already has.

On the one hand, it’s either “feel good” positivism-interspersed with a few biblical passages or it is (intentional or unintentional) catholic bashing.

Either way, no one puts their hand on the plow and looks back.

agree,
if your are (or were) in RCIA you need to read and study CAtholic things and not mix it up with Joel and if message which is not Catholic at all. Stick with the good stuff and not with fluff from the likes of him.

I saw him on tv for about 15 minutes and he was extremely charismatic. I forget what he said though 🤷

:rotfl: Yeah, he’s quite forgettable, but the more people listen to him, the more they believe that God wants them to be healthy, wealthy, and happy, and sin is the farthest thing from their minds. He NEVER speaks of the consequences of sin, the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross, or really anything except “Your Best Life Now” which is purely pop psychology/positive motivation. He’s just a motivation coach with a big snarky smile and blinky eyes.

He still gives me the creeps though. There’s just something wrong about the little weasel.

🤷
