I watched one of his programs with my mom. He bragged on the fact that because he trusted GOd he was eventually able to buy a bigger house.
What did you think about it?
What did your mom think about it?

SPOKENWORD:
Preaching a prosperity gospel is not friuitful. It brings many false conversions. There is more to the gospel message than feeling good. God Bless
I can’t believe it. We agree on something!👍

It disturbed me. I couldn’t understand how someone could say something that was so obviously against the bible. Neither Jesus nor the apostles were reach and they certainly did not attain wordly success. The whole thing seems ego driven to me. ‘No, God did not give the apostles wealth as a reward for their faith but he will me.’

My mom’s reaction surprised me. She is on a fixed income and lives in a small trailer. I would think that she would find his program offensive, but she LOVES him. It was while staying with her that I had to endure watching him.

To be honest though, I did find one good result of my mom watching him. My mother has always had a self defeating attitude. Before she even begins anything she assumes that she will fail. This has caused her to create many of her own problems in life. After watching his program, for a short while she does become more upbeat and positive. Her feelings don’t last though.

Hi Malachi,I believe there so much we agree on.You might even think I,m catholic. 😃 God Bless

Happen to be traveling in Houston right now.

Drove by the new Lakewood Church just the other day.

Also, I have watched his show a few times.

He is always very upbeat. However, if you really listen to what he is saying there just isn’t a whole lot there like most motivational speakers. A lot of cliche’s and a sprinkling in of scripture.

However, I can see the appeal and there obviously is with the money that must be rolling in to fund the move the old arena.

Also, I saw the episode where they opened their new church and I really got a bad vibe off it. Mr. Olsteen spent a lot of time talking about how the church has grown and etc paying some lip service to having faith in God, but it really sounded more like a stockholders meeting and an update on how great life is for the Olsteen’s than a worship service.

Funny how only the preachers of the prosperity gospel seem to be the ones getting wealthy, not the congregation.

There is a local mega-church that advertises on the radio in my area.

The general tone of the ads is like this “God wants the best for you! Come to River of Life Fellowship and find out how! Listen to the message and enjoy a free latte!”

I give people like Osteen, Kenneth Copeland and many others of their ilk credit for helping me on my Christian journey to arrive where I belong…in the Catholic Church. So, you never know how many they might help into the Church established by Christ. I did almost go the agnostic route until I decided to do research on the history of Christianity to try and get a better picture of what may have been taught over the centuries rather than trust another pastor for his or her interpretation of Scripture and I thank God first, but to some extent these people as well as I grew to be so disgusted with their teachiings. So, you never know. - God bless! -maranajewell

God Bless you, Marana!!

It's amazing how God can often use the tools of Man (I hesitate to use the term "Satan") to achieve His Will. I, too, had assistance from outside the Church to bring me closer to my Faith.
A friend, Church of Christ, gave me a book his dad compiled categorizing everything that is wrong with the Catholic Church. They use this in their Sunday School for heaven's sake!
I poured through this book, and whenever I got to a subject that made me question what the Church teaches, I went straight to the horse's mouth, or so to say, for verification. What I found was a Truth that just inspired me more and more.
So maybe these Charlatans are there for a reason. I can't help but think they are doing more harm than good, but it is ultimately our choice on which "Truth" to follow.

I think that Olsteen is very good for the down and out and the very novice level Christian, if that makes sense. To me he offers basic Christian Scripture to bring you closer to God if you have been far awar for some time or never really had a relationship with God in your life. I too have questioned this for a while as I do not live far from the church. Initially I thought to myself, wow, thats a huge congregation, that many people cant be wrong, maybe there is something to it. Not in the sense that I wanted to go to church there or not be Catholic anyore, just in the sense of curiosity of what is going on in there, that 45K people attend each Sunday and this man has this kind of revenue?; WHAT is he saying or doing to attract these people??? Thing is for me, if you do your homework, know the bible, and the Gospel of the Lord, and the fundamental teachings of the Catholic Church you are at a more informed level, and you will see that there is something missing here with this guy. A well informed Catholic, would never leave their church for his bc they know more of the truth and they know there is more to the trinity than what Joel Olsteen is putting out there. We all need a pick me up, I think he definitely has a gift, but I would not be a regular attendant at his chuch in leu of my own. I read a huge magazine article in a very established magazine last night and he and his wife, Victoria, were in real estate for years before they got to this point. They know how to work the system and make things happen financially for themselves, they know the right people. He purchased his house, a small mansion, for 335K in 1994, imagine what it sells for now. Yeah, they know they are doing well! I bet they do brag about it, as another poster said. They do not leave it ALL up to God. I dont think they would deny that for themselves, but, thats not what he preaches to his congregation. Yes, Olsteens message misinterpreted away from the Catholic teaching can cause more harm than good I believe for someone who lives a more pious life only to be disappointed by a sudden death in the family, or pet, or loss of career, illness and so on. I take him with a grain of salt, because Joel Olsteen ALMOST has an entitlement mentality and he does not prepare one for heavy doses of let down–he just tells you what to do once you’re there. It’s easy for him, he lives the life of Riley. :ehh: :hmmm: :coffeeread:

I’ve heard him referred to as the ‘smiling preacher’ on Larry King. He seems very personable and smiles a lot.
i would be all smiling too if i had his money.

i have never heard he speak about enduring suffering is all about how to get out of it. it is all about happy, happy and earthly riches. i have been to one of his seminar, the music is rockn roll and show. showing his family…

Joel Osteen. Before we condemn or praise this guy we have to take into account that he is the product of his environment. He is not a deceived ex-catholic, or a former atheist, or agnostic. He was born and raised a Baptist. His Father John was an ordained Baptist minister (John the Baptst. Hey that’s pretty funny). Someone posted Joel was also ordained, many claim he was not, but pushed into preaching in front of the camera to keep the Lakewood Church bankroll going. Ordained or not, from a Catholic perspective it isn’t valid anyway. Personally I like the old boy, he does offer some comfort in my latenight loneliness, but I pick and choose what I’ll accept from him. “Let God move into your life”. That I’ll accept. “Endure the bad times, because God has a plan for you”. I don’t think he should proclaim that’s for financial prosperity only, as he likes to believe, but more often for spiritual prosperity. If he wishes to have any true credibility as a christian, he should start teaching God will get you THROUGH your troubles, not out of it. There is a big difference. As Paul begged three times “Please remove this affliction from me” GOD: My grace is sufficient for you.

Joel Osteen is the king of the new denominational churches among us, he now preaches in the Houston, TX compact center where the Rockets used to play basketball games, he pulls in thousands at a time for a chance to hear him speak. He travels to large cities like the Billy G revivals.

Not to take anything away from his ministry, but he is not an ordained minister, but he is a great motivational speaker? He does speak a christian message on how we should live our lives from a moral standpoint.

In my opinion he is a Disciple of Christ, sharing his testimony about his faith and his passion to preach a good message, I believe he has good purpose.

But didn’t Jesus set up Disciples and Apostles?

What is the difference between the two?

Wouldnt all preachers and Priest outside of the Church be just simply Disciples?

And the Catholic Church priesthood all the way up to the Pope since the time of Peter, the appostlic traditon?
As a ordained non-dom preacher, I just did a sermon on this very subjest.
Yes Jesus did set up Disciples and Apostles and the difference between the 2 are:
Disciple is a learner, a follower, a student. Thats why the 12 were called disciples.
Apostle is one sent out to spread the word of God. When Jesus sent the 11 out to spread the Good News they were Apostles.
See Jesus was a Apostle sent by God.
All preachers and priests I would think are Apostles because they are spreading the Good News.
His congregaton are Disciples because they are followers, learners or students.
I am a non-dom ordained preacher and I disagree with Joel Olsteen’s preachings. He got his mega church from his father. His first sermon was 1 week before he became head pastor of his church called Lakewood church. In 2004 his income was 44 million. He spent 95 million renovating the compac center that used to house the nba houston rockets. his congrigation is 30,000 and counting. His church brings in around 45 million in thites and around 35 million in mail in donations. He is known as the smilling preacher. His preachings are called cotten candy preachings, it tastes good but with no substance. He doesnt speak about God or Jesus and asked why he replies “its not my gift.” He preaches that you can be as rich as he is if you give your money to him through the church and you will be blessed. He charges $10 to $100 dollars for tickets to hear him spead at different events. I live about 10-15 miles away from his church.
Mind you this is my opion and I did do a lot of research on these 2 subjects. I just touched on it for you.

Joel is what I (and even my Protestant friend) call a “fluffy antichrist”. His gospel is to have your best life now, which is what his followers are going to have to do because they aren’t going to have such a good afterlife :(. His message isn’t Christ centered at all. It’s about man. It’s about you. It’s ridiculous to think Heaven won’t be as great as this life…

He’s a false prophet, not to be trusted. I didn’t even trust him as a Protestant. 😉

Joel Osteen needs to give up religion and just be a motivational speaker, because that’s all he knows. Every time I hear him speak, religion (and Christ) seems to be an afterthought. When people question him on serious Christian doctrine, he either avoids the question or he presents some nonsensical postmodern thought that contradicts the essence of the faith.

Like I said, he needs to give up religion and move on to secular motivating.

Lack of doctrinal commitment is where the big bucks are.

Its new-age without having to admit to it.

And why tell people they need to pray to God for endurance in this life, as all the saints and martyrs did, when you can tell them to pray for a promotion and a new car. 😃

it is called Apostolic succession. God sent Jesus and Jesus sent the Apostles and the Apostles sent their successors. no one outside the CC can be ordained to spread the Word of God. why? because who sends them? who has authority to ordain anyone outside the Apostolic succssors? no one.
