Do you have a week?? We can go over John Chapter Six. WARNING!!! You’ll never be the same again.😉 teachccd:)
ha!! I have more fun-filled stuff for us to do before that. shudder I have to work up strength and stamina if we’re going to do John 6.
It would mean if someone went to confession for fornication, and that person was living with someone at the time, the Priest could decide to not give that person Absolution.
Oh okay. That makes sense.

One must posess a firm purpose of amendment in order for their sins to be forgiven. God calls us to total conversion and that cannot happen if we are attached and continue to commit even one mortal sin. In that case a priest could not give absolution because the penitent is not truly sorry for his sin. You cannot say to God, I’m sorry for stealing but I will continue to commit fornication. You are either for God or against Him. Any continuous state of Mortal sin is to be against God and the priest would retain his sins. This is highly unusual but definitely not out of order. Usually if one knows that he/she will continue living in mortal sin they will not even go to confession unless they are seeking guidance…teachccd:)

I talk to several priest who actually did that, he denied absolution to someone who was living with another woman, and man who was living a gay lifestyle.

He advise both to stop living the life of impurity.

What would a person do if a priest just refused to grant absolution for no reason? I mean, I bet that rarely ever happens, but if it does…what does that mean? What does a person do?

The priest would have to have a reason to deny absolution. For one he must what the sins are in order to know what sins are forgiven. He also offer advise on how to combat the temptation that leads to sin.

Here is a fictional example:

Thomas: Bless me father for I have I sinned. It has been a month since my last confession.

These are my following sins. I currently love with my girlfriend, and we been having sex on a daily basis. I feel really bad about it and I’m sorry for having committed them.

Fr. Mark: God is please that you have come to seek his mercy. Tom, do you live with this girlfriend of yours?

Thomas: Yes, Father. This is the girl I plan to marry when I graduate college.

Fr. Mark: If you are truly sorry, you should not live with her. You are putting yourself in the near occasion of sin.

Thomas: I can’t do that. I love her.

Fr. Mark: Why not?

Thomas: Because I love her.

Fr. Mark: How do you know you love her?

Thomas: Because I feel it, and there is chemistry.

Fr. Mark: Love is not just mere feelings. Within a year those feelings may be gone, and if its chemistry your relationship might explode. What do you desire for her?

Thomas: Well, when we do marry, we plan to have fun first. Kids later. Build a home maybe… I don’t know its too early. I just meet this girl 2 weeks ago.

Fr. Mark: There is more to love than that. If you truly love her, you must not have sex with her. Sex is sacred and it is holy. Save it for marriage. If you do love her, you desire heaven for her. Your love for your girlfriend should reflect the union between the Church and Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ died for his Bride. You ought to do the same. You have to move out of the apartment, and not have sex.

Thomas: But Fr. I love her.

Fr. Mark. Then don’t live together. I cannot grant you absolution until you make a resolution to abstain from sex. This isn’t love that you are displaying.

Thomas left the confession completely disappointed.

Well, that’s a fictional storyline and just one example. The priest have to know the sin order to forgive the sins. Second, the pentitent must make a resolution from within not to do the sin again.

The person would need to remove themselves from the grave sin that they intend to continually commit. You cannot show true repentance while greatly offending God at the same time. Once true conversion of the heart takes place and the person removes himself from this grave sin then he can return to confession for absolution and it will most likely be granted. I have never heard of a priest not granting absolution for no reason. In fact I’ve heard of quite the opposite where priests will absolve someone who is marginally intending to remain in that same sin. Someone may say, for example that they will probably not remove themselves from viewing pornography but will try. While a firm purpose of amendment is marginal, the priest may still give absolution with the hope that God’s grace will help the penitent remove himself from this temptation. This is not a black and white area. The priest can only show the love of God and act in the person of Christ who said," Go and sin no more." The rest is up to the penitent. Reconciliation exists between you, God and the Church. This is a sacrament of healing can only be effective if a person intends to mend the wound. We can pick at the scab from time to time but ultimately the wound must heal.

God wants us in His friendship and His priests should do everything in their power to see that that happens. So refusal of absolution for no reason would defeat this purpose.

God Bless…teachccd:)

The body of Christ…CATHOLIC EUCHARIST
*Bless me, father, for I have sinned…*CATHOLIC CONFESSION
*I baptize you… *CATHOLIC (and some protestant) BAPTISM
*Now and at the hour of our death… *END OF THE HAIL MARY PRAYER (CATHOLIC)
*Lord, hear our prayer… *SAYING AFTER THE GENERAL INTERCESSIONS AT A CATHOLIC MASS

These are ALL used in Catholicism. I have yet to hear, " Bless me Father for I have sinned" at a Calvary Chapel.😃 I would hope that Protestants would use all of these but somehow I don’t see that yet…God Bless…teachccd:)
You know what I goofed up:o I was looking at your signature not Curious:o OOPS–sorry about that.

If I get a chance today ,I will ask my minister what this verse means:thumbsup:

I’m probably more anxious for his answer than Curious. I’ve been asking Protestants for the last eight years and always get what’s been given on this forum… the big S–T–R–E–T–C–H…" If the disciples preach that Jesus is Lord, they will be forgiven." And I think anyone with a fourth grade education knows that it is not what Jesus said, especially in light of the other passing on of authority that Jesus has granted His Apostles. (cf. Matthew 16:18-19 and Matthew 18:18) Anyway I’m a waitin’…teachccd:)

Forgetting is not allowed. :tsktsk:

😛

I’m anxious too. Either it’s going to be The Big Stretch or it’s going to be something different…and hopefully more solid than the Big Stretch.

I quickly went through this thread but something just kept gnawing at me… See below:
Matthew 6:9-13:
9After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

11Give us this day our daily bread.

12And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
If this is the model prayer that we are supposed to use then forgiving sins is not just for the apostles. I have always been taught to take this as we won’t be forgiven of our transgressions if we can’t forgive the transgressions of others.

12And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
Hmmm…I always thought this meant personal offenses…like if you stole my bike and I forgave you for it.

That is exactly correct. “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us” means that there is a condition put on whether or not God forgives us. If we are unforgiving then our Lord says that the measure in which we measure will be measured unto us. This, like the parable of the unforgiving servant, is our Lord instructing us on how we are to treat the Body of Christ because that is exactly how we treat Christ. (cf. Matthew 25:31-46) This verse has no context with John 20:23. These are two totally different connotations. Remember, a proof-text taken out of context becomes a pretext…God Bless…teachccd:)

O.K. I will patiently wait for Tom’s interpretation of John 20:23. Knowing the truth should be your priority above all of your busyness this month.😉 WAITING…WAITING…WAITING…WAITING…WAITING…WAITING…

I’ve waited eight years, what’s another couple of weeks?? Who’s Tom and how does his interpretation render correct when we have already heard other Protestant interpretaions?? Just wondering??

Oh well, I’ll go for now but I will not let up on this one. Curious, if you are out there, I’m starting a campaign among the Protestant world to find their answer. I’m always being hit with 2 Timothy 3:16 for the “proof” of sola scriptura (even though that doesn’t apply) so let’s see how it works here. EVERY scripture is profitable. How can this one be when nobody knows what it means?? (Protestants, I mean) I know what it means. And that is ONLY what it means. Those who run from the Church run from that passage. The Church is the missing link. Use Scotchtape or glue but the real link to the truth of John 20:23 is in the Sacrament of Reconcilitaion found in the Catholic Church.

So, Curious, this one is for you…:banghead:

Love to all…teachccd:)
