Second Blogger Quits Edwards Campaign

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – A second blogger working for Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards quit Tuesday under pressure from conservative critics who said her previous online messages were anti-Catholic.

Melissa McEwan wrote on her personal blog, Shakespeare’s Sister, that she left the campaign because she was becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the level of attention focused on her and her family.

“This was a decision I made, with the campaign’s reluctant support, because my remaining the focus of sustained ideological attacks was inevitably making me a liability to the campaign,” McEwan said Tuesday night.

Kate Bedingfield, a spokeswoman for the Edwards campaign, said McEwan left the campaign under her own terms. Both Bedingfield and McEwan declined additional comment.
McEwan’s resignation came just one day after another blogger, Amanda Marcotte, left the Edwards staff for similar reasons.

In one posting, McEwan described Christian supporters of President Bush as his “wingnut Christofascist base.” Marcotte once posed a mock question-and-answer session in which she speculated what would have happened if the Virgin Mary had taken an emergency contraceptive.
“You’d have to justify your misogyny with another ancient mythology,” came the answer.

Donohue is a brash and frequent critic of those who speak out against the church, as well as homosexuals and Hollywood’s control by “secular Jews who hate Christianity.”
"It’s too bad that Edwards didn’t make the decision himself to get rid of them," Donohue said Tuesday night. "Why he had to wait for these women to bail on their own doesn’t speak well for him. But I’m delighted, and as far as I’m concerned, this closes the issue. I have no vendetta against John Edwards."

This, on top of his pro-abortion stand should give Catholic voters great concern when choosing the next President. Of course for me he was never an option.:nope:
 
I thought Bill O’Reilly did a good job covering this the past couple nights. But I wondered why he didn’t have Donohue on. Anybody know?

I do not think they are on speaking terms. There is some type of rift between the two.
 
IIRC, Donohue criticized O’Reilly some years ago for some criticism O’Reilly levelled at Pope John Paul II.
 
Frances Kissling, president of Catholics for a Free Choice, a group that supports a woman’s right to choose in matters of sexuality and reproductive health, called Donohue’s criticism a “cheap shot.”
“I believe that spirited, provocative criticism of powerful people and organizations, including the Catholic church, is part of democracy,” Kissling said. “I don’t always like what people may say but I really think they have a right to do it. Often the sharpest, most provocative critiques are the most on target.”
Kissling sent Marcotte a letter of support, which was posted on her blog.
“I wanted to send a message to the Edwards campaign that they should not cave to that sort of bullying,” Kissling said about her letter.
In the blog about her resignation, Marcotte said she was attacked because of her “personal, non-mainstream views on religious influence on politics.”
Earlier in the day, she had written: “The Christian version of the virgin birth is generally interpreted as super-patriarchal, where … women are nothing but vessels.”

I read this on Fox news yesterday. I notice the media makes it seem more like it’s an internal Catholic thing by quoting “Catholics for a free choice” (A group I never heard of). I also notice they pick and choose the quotes they use from the offenders. The stuff I read that was posted was offensive to anyone who would read it.

typical mainstream media nonsense.
 
I love how the left like to do this vile stuff, but when someone stands upp to them, they yell “foul”. They have the right to criticise, but we do not have the right to fight back and defend outselves. Not any more. Time to get militant 👍

I don’t know about anything between O’Reilly & Donohue. I get e-mail news alerts from the Catholic League telling where & when Donohue will be on tv. Last week I received about three saying he was going to be on a couple of shows on CNBC and or MSNBC. I didn’t catch it. I didn’t think anyone watched those networks:D 😉

O’Reilly & Donohoe stopped talking to each about three years ago. O’Reilly made a comment about JPII… that he “never liked this pope” and other uncharitable remarks about the Holy Father. Donohoe publically commented without telling O’Reilly first and that was that. O’Reilly banned him from the show.

I am not a fan of O’Reilly AT ALL, and Bill Donohue gets on my nerves every now and then, but I commend them both - Bill for covering it and Donohue for going into relentless attack dog mode on these two vile ugly creatures. If this were Islam, or remarks about gays, Edwards would have fired them. Edwards is a phony and an unseemly charactor

But, at least, last presidential election, Edwards had the unrivaled class to point out that if Senator Kerry were elected to the Oval Office and had his way regarding embyronic stem cell research, then Christopher Reeve would be able to walk again.

I’m now waiting for Edwards to start campaigning against Republicans because President Bush killed a beloved movie star.
