Yes, apostasy is the abandonment. But abandonment is a process beginning with the introduction of false doctrines. In the case of some of the Galatian churches it was the introduction of faith PLUS works, grace PLUS law. Sound familiar?
Better eat more fruits and vegetables.
No one is
first justified/saved by the “works of the Law of Moses” nor “righteous works” because only Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross could atone for Adam’s sin and open the gates of heaven for us so that we could have
hope of inheriting eternal life.
Adam’s sin made us
enemies of God and we lost eternal life. Jesus’ sacrifice reconciles us to God as
friends through Baptism which
spiritually regenerates us. [Romans 5, Titus 3:5, 1 Corinthians 6:11, Ephesians 2:1]
However, after we are justified by Baptism, then we have
hope of eternal life. Hope is not something that is a sure thing. [Titus 3:7]
I can
hope to go to the beach on Monday. However, when Monday comes, if I cannot actually go to the beach, then my hope is not realized. I never receive what I hoped for.
We must remain in God’s kindness/grace in order to actually inherit eternal life when we die.
Romans 11:22 “Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off.”
We know that if we are actually cut off the Vine/Christ due to sin, then we are no longer saved/justified because we must remain attached to Christ until death in order to realize our
hope of inheriting eternal life.
John 15:6 “If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned.”
**
If persons sin, then they no longer abide/remain in Christ and they are no longer saved. **Instead, if they do not repent and confess before death, then they will be cast into hellfire.
Jesus states in Matthew 19:16-23 “Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher,
what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?”
17 So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.
But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”
18 He said to Him, “Which ones?”
Jesus said, “ ‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’ 19 ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’”
20 The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?”
21 Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
23 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Why is it hard for a rich man to enter heaven? Because he does not love his neighbor as himself. Unless he shares, he will be cast into hell. [Luke 3:10-11, 1 Timothy 6:9]
**
Jesus commands that we keep His commandments in order to inherit eternal life.** You keep stating that after we are saved, that our works have no bearing on whether we inherit eternal life or not.
Since Jesus states otherwise, then you are implying that Jesus is a liar!
Hebrews 5:9-11 “9 And having been perfected,
He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, 10 called by God as High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek,” 11 of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.”
Unless we do the will of His Father in heaven, we will not be saved. We were created to do good works and fulfill His plan for us and unless we do good works and refrain from doing evil works, then we are not doing the will of His Father and we will not be saved.
Ephesians 2:10 “For we are His workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
This is a command; it is not a suggestion! We must do good works in order to inherit eternal life. If we do not do them, then Jesus will vomit us out of His mouth! [Revelation 3:16]
Matthew 7:20-24 “Therefore by their fruits you will know them. 21 “**Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. **22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ 24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:”
2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 “when
the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8
in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,”
James 2:24 “You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.”
Faith alone is not Biblical and is instead a false doctrine!
