I wonder what he means by old hymns. I don’t really care about his modern music.
I went back to re-read the article and couldn’t find any reference to “old hymns”, but I did find this reference:
“The old musical settings of the Mass no longer work.”
In this reference he means that the music for the current version of the Novus Ordo will not work with the new changes, mostly because the words (Gloria, for example) have changed, and require new musical settings. Also, the over-used “Christ has died, …” memorial acclamation wil no longer be used at all.
Does this clarify?
As to his “modern” music, much of his music is settings of prayers and psalms which we have been familiar with, and some (maybe not all) touch my heart deeply. I am also versed in Gregorian Chant, so I know the difference between chant and “modern” music in the Church. But you may be judging him a bit rashly…go back to his early albums, especially those recorded with a Presbyterian Church choir, and listen…you will hear good, solidly Catholic, work. But, as the saying goes, “to each his own”. You are certainly entitled to your own opinion.
