What do you think? Personally, if I took private notes and requested they be burned upon my death, regardless of the “great riches” someone thinks they might contain, they should be burned without haste or question. And to think they should be released at some point to the public–as the Archbishop alluded-- is frightening.

The Archbishop should know better. It’s the same as if he were executor of a will – if he failed to carry out the will’s provisions he could be found in contempt of court.
Of course, his duty to carry out John Paul II’s wishes is even greater than an ordinary will.

What a disgrace. For me it is a matter of trust. Newly promoted Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz cannot be trusted. What a shame. This is a rare case where I think the press was right to jump all over this. I pray that Pope Benedict instructs Dziwisz and puts him out to pasture if he won’t obey.

…maybe it’s me… but are we over-reacting just a little here…? IMHO of course:confused:

I see this as a matter of integrity and trust; grave matter.

Sarah Jane said:
“Given that, according to the legal dispositions, all the writings attributed to him must be collected, with this edict we order all those who are in possession of them that they send with due diligence to the same tribunal any writing that has the servant of God as its author, unless it has already been handed in to the postulation of the cause,” says the edict.

“We remind the faithful that with regard to his writings, we do not refer only to the printed works, which have already been collected, but also to manuscripts, diaries, letters and any other private writing of the servant of God,” says the document.

According to this edict, Archbishop Dziwisz CANNOT burn the papers because he must send them to the tribunal.

The Will predated this edict. And to me the Will trumps this edict. The Archbishop was disobedient to the Pope he served and he has caused another public scandal on our Church.

And you think that he must disobey to the present Pope?

As I wrote 10:31AM, “I pray that Pope Benedict instructs Dziwisz [to burn the papers] and puts him out to pasture if he won’t obey.”

Maybe Benedict XVI asks Dziwisz to not burn the papers because the Church is now investigating a cause for sainthood for John Paul II.

As with anything of papal effect such as this, I would imagine that the notes are going to remain in the vatican Secret archives under lock and key until such time as any pope chooses to release them. So I would not worry much. They aren’t even going to be seen except by a select few who will be able to well discern the material and decide if anything ought to be destroyed, preserved, or released. No big deal here, then, in the long run. If there is something of spiritual patrimony for the Church which is deserving for the faithful, the judgement call which the Archbishop made will ultimately be found priaseworthy. If there is anything which ought not be released, it won’t.
