=Bataar;4930396]What are your opinions of John Paul II being given this title? I happened to overhear my mother who is a very devout Catholic talking with one of her friends, who is also a very devout Catholic about this issue. Her friend was saying that she doesn’t think he deserves the title because of the way he let Catholicism “crumble” in western civilization, mainly by not cracking down on borderline heretical bishops and cardinals. This is very apparent in the U.S. where bishops such as Raymond Hunthausen were allowed to virtually destroy the Archdiocese of Seattle with his liberal theology and indoctrination. We’re still a long, long way from recovering out here. Allowing corrupt bishops in the U.S. and around the world to preach whatever they want, ordain whomever they want without fear of reprisal has done vast amounts of harm to the Church, more so even than the sex abuse scandals (which neither my mom’s friend nor myself fault John Paul II with). Obviously you can’t expect the pope to know what is going on at every single church around the world, but when whole archdioceses are falling away, it seems very wrong to just stand by and let that happen.
I felt my mom’s friend made some very compelling points and am interested to see what others think.
My dear friend in Christ,
A few thoughts.
First as one who has read (some mutiple times) all of the *Encyclicals and Apolostolic Letters *of John PauII, he certainly is a teacher of unique and emense talent. So because of his ability to teach the faith and share the faith, I agree that the title of GREAT is quite appropriate, completely fitting and I pray will happen.
Your mothers friend and I share a very common concern on the issue of disipline of errant bishops and priest.
A dear and now departed priest friend and mentor of mine was a Papal Leget from 1980 until he died in December of 2000.
A large part of his job in working for the Pope, was to meet with these erreant. disobedient bishops and try to convience them of the error of their way’s.
He shared with us that only about 10% of America’s bishops were faithful and loyal to Rome, and the Papacy, and were themselves
truly members of the Roman Catholic Magerterium.
Last year about 25% to 30% of the bishops we now have, spoke out in the public press on the issue of Abortion, and voting for a Pro-Life candidate. It is my prayerful hope that this reflects what we see as a new trend towards obedience to Rome.
I have discussed this issue with several priest, who advised me that their was and is a great fear that if Rome comes down hard (beleive me they are working behind the scenes) on this large number of disobedient, know more and know better bishops, that they may well split from the RCC, taking with them countless guible and innocent souls.
The Catholic Church in America, could become the
The American catholic church!
Given the effects of the changes they have wrought, very low Mass attendance, little use of
Confession, and what they have done to the prieshood and religious life, one might ask if the damage has not already been done?
The issue is a very complex one, and is best left in the hands of our Pope, who is afterall inspired by the Holy Spirit.
One always is at risk in judging others actions, eventhough that is what Christ tells us to do. Seldom do we have even close to sufficient information and facts to be judgemental on Universal Catholic Issues.
I too come from an archdiocese that is riddled with Liberalism, and has a “catholic” weekly paper that often prints without rebuttal, evident Heresies. Many letters to the editor and the bushop were ignored.
So, yes Pope Jihn Paul II was and is GREAT. How he managed to accomplish what little he was able to do was a direct intervention by our Loving God.
The answer lies in God’s hands!
Satan may win the battle, BUT we know he loses the war!
