John Paul the Great?

Most of the bishops we were affected by were appointed by Archbishop Jadot during the Pontificate of Paul VI.
Right, and John Paul II left them in power without making them change their teachings which makes him responsible for the errors. I don’t have the numbers so this is just an opinion/assumption, but I would guess that per percentage of population, more Catholics left the church under his papacy than at any other point in history. I could be wrong, but it’s probably pretty accurate.

Yes, that’s a very interesting list. Thanks for digging around and finding those. Certainly one would be hard pressed to say much “Gertrude the Great” or “Makarios the Great” (well, at least this one would ;))
You are most welcome.👍

I would just add here that I believe that St. Leo the Great was known more for his very strong intervention in the face of the wild and scandalous actions at the Robber Synod of Constantinople, . . .
That would be the Robber Synod of Ephesus. Sheesh! 😉

I’m not sure when the Byzantines or the others do it, but I believe all Churches have it.

All Saints Sunday is the Sunday after Pentecost.

I second that.
FYI - I did post my reason, after I had given my more rhetorical response. Whether one agrees or desagrees, it is there, it is a reason, and it is concrete in that it is something real. One can think it is irrelevant or insufficient, or one can not.

“But his stature on the world stage and his longevity is why I call him the Great,” an assassination attempt, and he helped destroy communism (at least to the public eye).

I’m sorry, but is that supposed to be relevant and sufficient?

No, concrete, as was asked. Whether it is relevant or sufficient is nothing but an opinion, as I just said.

Even still, that’s it?

The great thing about this place is that we can all post our opinion, especially on matters with which we disagree with. I have my reasons. Pope Benedict may have different reasons he chose to call him Pope John Paul the Great. You may have your reasons you do not like it. Then we can all be respectful of the other’s opinions.

Jeepers, sorry. I didn’t realize asking for something more solid was such a crime here.

daughteroftruth,

the days of asking for something more solid have gone with the advent of the new ecumenism. the only crime is remembering what the Church always taught everywhere. then the new ecumenism shows itself for what it is: tolerant of everthing but what the Church always taught everwhere.

Why was Pope John Paul II one of the greatest Popes? Did he accomplish some good? Yes. He fought communism and defended male priesthood and Church’s teaching on sexuality. However, is that worthy of being called “the Great?” Rather, defending the Church’s teaching and not going against Dogma seems like a rather basic role of the Pope. Being called “the Great” means something. It implies he is a member of a very select crowd, that of the greatest Church leaders.

But was he? Can we really call a pope who was responsible for such things as Assisi, kissing the koran, Luminous Mysteries, homosexual priestly sex scandals, and widespread N.O. abuses “the Great?” Is he worthy of the same title of St. Gregory or St. Leo? No knock on our Holy Father. It is no shame to not be called “the Great.” St. Pius V isn’t even called “the Great!” If people want to honor Pope John Paul II, fine. No harm in that. I feel that at heart he was a truly holy man, even if I don’t agree with all of his actions / applications of his holiness. But lets be more prudent before we bandy the title “Great” about.

Unfortunately this particular subforum have a few that consider themselves superior Catholics to the Pope. Do not let it reflect on the membership here or the average Traditional Catholic.

But fortunately for this subforum we have non-Traditional-others who consider themselves superior Catholics, superior Catholic historians, liturgists and exegetes! We couldn’t get by without you, pnewton. You’re a theodoros.

I agree that Pope John Paul II was indeed one of the greatest and most influential popes in church history. What’s more is that a goodly porportion of the faithful seem to think so as well. Indeed, according to recent news out of Rome, Pope John Paul II may be declared blessed as early as next April. Great and holy people are always controversial in different ways and John Paul is no exception to this. Still, his holiness, love of the Gospel, and faith in the resurrected Lord stand out. I believe he is indeed a saint.

You continuously make comments like this and then have the nerve to say that you don’t believe the pope to be a demi-god?
