Does Catholic belief that Saint John the Baptist was probably born (but not conceived) without original sin cause problems for non-Catholics as the immaculate conception of Mary does?

The CC does not teach that John the Baptist was born without original sin.

Here’s an article from Jimmy Akin’s blog which goes more in-depth:

Well, Adam and Eve were born without original sin too, but, as we all painfully know, they were not immaculate. 😉

:blessyou:

I had just read that on his blog, which is why I didn’t call it a Catholic teaching.

But as I reread my question, I see that I should have been more clear. So here goes.

Does the belief among some Catholics that Saint John the Baptist was probably born (but not conceived) without original sin cause problems for non-Catholics as the immaculate conception of Mary does?

I never even knew of this until about a year ago.

This is the first I’ve heard about John the Baptist and the pious and probable belief of no original sin - interesting insight but I assume that Protestants disagree with it.

I have never heard of this and I am not at all familair with this particular beleif.

The CCC only says he was “filled by the Holy Spirit”, which is not the same as not having original sin. So to me, it looks as if the Church has no teaching on it, which means you could believe either way (although that seems like a pretty big thing, and NOT saying it might imply he did have original sin.)

It’s certainly true the Church does NOT teach that he was born without original sin, it is clearly not in the CCC that I saw.

It is not a doctrine. It is a tradition: the speculation is that he was freed from original sin at the moment he “leapt for joy” in his mother’s womb when Mary entered the house of Zechariah & Elizabeth. The tradition does not say that he was *conceived *without original sin, only that he was born without it.

Adam and Eve were created by God free from original sin. They were not “born” nor were they “conceived” immaculate.

I have not heard of the “pious belief” of some Catholics concerning John. But it is interesting - even if it is not binding - to consider the possibilities that God bestowed this sort of gift on His people.

I’ve heard that belief expressed before but as has been said, it’s not an officially proclaimed doctrine or dogma. The difference between this and the Immaculate Conception though is that Mary was CONCEIVED without original sin. With regard to John the Baptist, some believe that he was BORN without original sin. He still would have been conceived with original sin, but he may have been freed from it when he received the Holy Spirit while still in the womb.
