I’m buying a Vatican flag and waving it from my house this Fourth of July, since the past ten years have really sapped whatever bits of patriotism I had in my blood.

Join me. Ebay sellers have really inexpensive flags, under $9.

This is a way to show where your loyalties now lie, in Post-America.

I understand your feelings, but in truth the flag stands for a lot more than the America of the last 10 years. Among other things, the personal heroism and sacrifices made under the flag of the United States have made it possible for you to even attend Church and wave a different flag should you still choose to do so.

I have a funny story about waving flags on the 4th of July. We put up our American Flag, an Italian Flag and a Guatemalan Flag. We went out for lunch, and when we got back there was a note on our door saying “This isn’t Mexico.”

Americans, proudly and gratefully fly your American flags on the fourth of July.

Your politicians are not your country.

Those Americans who oppose immoral laws are just as American as those who espouse them. The flag belongs to all of you.

👍

Besides, it’s not like the Vatican is some sort of Utopian Catholic Empire. They have their problems, as do the rest of the world.

Patriotism is about loyalty to your country as a sort of parental figure or surrogate. The actions of a few (or many) venal politicians shouldn’t change that.

:rotfl:

Something similar happened a few years ago at the apartment complex where we lived at the time: an Indian man and woman were arguing outside (not in English), and someone from the building shouted at them to “go back to Mexico.” It was funny and embarrassing all at the same time.

My husband and I have seriously considered flying a Vatican flag. Not just for Fourth of July as any kind of political statement. But he’s a big nerd about flags anyway. 😛 In his office at work he has miniature flags of the countries he has ethnic heritage in. And one of his favorite part of the Olympics is the Walk of Nations, because of all the flags and the stats about the countries the athletes come from.

I will never wave any flag other than the Stars & Stripes, on July 4 or any other day.

The USA has done great things, and always will. Is it perfect? No. But that’s no reason to disrespect the flag and what it represents, by flying any other flag on July 4 (assuming you are American).

I respectfully have to disagree with you Captain America.
I WILL be flying the Stars and Stripes on July 4th, and on
every other American day of honor.

Yes our country is in a mess. but that’s why it needs good
people now more than ever to fight for it. Just like with the
priest sex scandal, I was so totally disgusted that I even had
thoughts of leaving The Church. But just like Jesus did, the
early Christian Martyrs did, and today’s Christians being
slaughtered do, you don’t give up.

I have never missed voting no matter how much I have disliked
the choices, because people have died to give me that right
to do what I feel is the best for our country to pass on to
those coming after me. People before me fought no matter
how hard it was, now it’s my turn to do what I can.

We all need to come together to be stronger, not fracture off
even more to become even weaker. Yes my country has problems
and isn’t perfect, it’s run by people, but then neither is our Catholic
Church. But we stick with our Church, pray for her, and work to make
it closer to what it should be, one Catholic at a time. Same with our country.

I am not a citizen of Vatican City, so I will not be flying their flag, I am
a citizen of the United States of America and will be flying The Stars
and Stripes. And as a Catholic, the “flag” I “fly” is the Crucifix I wear.

Also, why would you? It’s unlikely any of you there are Vatican citizens, so why fly a flag to which you owe no allegiance, and especially in lieu of your own?

And further, by refusing to fly your own flag, you essentially hand over the flag to evil Americans because the good Americans would no longer claim it as their own, when good Americans should, in their patriotism, fight to make and keep the United States good.

👍 (Of course, in my case, it would be an Indian flag and August 15th, but the principle still stands. ;))

I am of Filipino origin, but you will not see me flying a Philippine flag on June 12th (Philippine “Independence” Day; why I use scare quotes around “Independence” is another story). When I swore allegiance to Her Majesty, I swore allegiance to Canada, and I take oaths seriously. Further, the Philippine consulate general confirmed for me that I have lost my Philippine citizenship. My allegiance is to only one country now, and only the Maple Leaf will fly from my home on July 1st, if ever I come around to buying one.

It wouldn’t really matter in our case. Our house sits about 100 yards from the road, with a lot of trees in the intervening space. One can barely see the house, let alone what’s flying from the flagpole on the porch.

Nope. Not gonna happen. My loyalties lie with the United States of America, and they always will.

I also will not be flying an Irish flag, (I do that on St. Patrick’s day. 😉 )
The 4th of July is a celebration of our freedom, and the birth of our nation.

It is not a day to protest, or push political or social agendas. It is a day to celebrate being
American, or at least, living in this great country.

God bless America!

Ditto!!!

If the whole of individual catholics defy church teaching it does not change the church teaching or what the Vatican flag stands for (I’d bet a super majority of catholics are pretty bad)

If the whole of Americans defy the constitution and what the nation was meant to stand for it does not change its idea or what the American flag stands for (I’d bet a super majority of Americans are for unconstitutional politics)

If you were the only person on the face of the planet who was a faithful Catholic and patriotic American you may wave your flags and stand for something or you may lie down and succumb to defeat.

No thanks. I don’t feel too patriotic these days myself, but I refuse to disrespect those who sacrificed so much to start this country by flying a foreign flag, even the Vatican’s.

Sounds like you are due for a new forum screen name. I took the liberty of suggesting one for you in your above quote.

As the daughter of a WWII Vet, I fly my American Flag every day. I fly it in honor of those who have gone to war & fought & or died for this country in order for me to be able to practice my religion in freedom. As will as all my other freedoms. We had an eye opening experience at the Easter Vigil this year. A young Syrian woman was Baptized & Comfirmed into the Church. At end end of the Mass, she was allowed to speak a few words to the congregation. In short, she told us that we as Americans don’t know how lucky we are to live in a country that allows the freedom to practice the religion of our choice. When she was born, her Mother was unable to get her Baptized in fear of retaliation. She told us never to take our freedoms for granted. We would not want to be living as some others are. She had the whole Church in tears. I will always proudly fly my American Flag.
