I believe in freedom of speech, even hate speech so long as it does not incite violence. But I also believe in freedom of protest, and, comparatively mild as Jon Stewart’s statement may appear to some, it is still belittling to an essential tenet of Catholicism (and uttered by a non-Catholic at that) and so opens itself up to protest. When we ignore or laugh at insults such as this because we believe they are trivial, our whole society becomes coarser and more desensitized (if that’s even possible) and all our freedoms are eroded.
