I don’t know…I guess I just didn’t find his comment to be that offensive. As someone else said, I hear waaaay worse things in day-to-day life, like on the local radio. I’ll save my righteous indignation for those such occasions.

It is not a myth that Catholics believe in transubstantiation.

I wonder if those that are comparing this to insults on Muslims or other groups ever complain about all the politically correct over-sensitivity that goes on when dealing with certain groups. If so, then becoming politically correct and over sensitive now is hypocricy. We must respond to things like this as we think is proper in any situation, not just jump up and say, “Yay, it’s finally our turn to get offended.”
I actually wasn’t suggesting that the Transubstantiation is a myth, and a charitable re-reading of my statement will make this clear.

Regardless, the Transubstantiation has precious little to do with Mr. Stewart’s blood.

History tells us that Catholics in the past have born epithets for the sake of our belief in the Transubstantiation: ‘cannibals,’ ‘blood-drinkers,’ &c. I don’t think anyone will disagree that this sort of statement constitutes defamation in its strictest sense. This is on the level of another blood-related canard: i.e., blood libel.

As I stated, I sympathize with those who are saying ‘Its just a joke!’ but I think this is one of those moments when we’re seeing a public person’s ugliness, an ugliness that has no place in decent entertainment.

Regarding your last statement, this line of reasoning assumes that I’m a very specific sort of character who reflexively second-guesses the protests of Jews and Muslims when their communities come under attack or defamation. Now, since I’ve given no reason for you to think this, I know that you wouldn’t assume the worst of me… :o

Best,
CTC

I did not say that you suggested it, as you put it, a charitable re-reading will reveal. The point is that* this time* the joke was not based on a myth or perpetuating a myth. I am myself am not concerned about accusations of blood-drinkers or cannibalism. I think the idea that this myth my be perpetuated is absolutely hilarious. I am well aware that Stewart’s catholic jokes are often based on some Catholic myth. This remark was not. Nor was it based on stereotypes, as was the Jewish remark.

There IS a time to say that something is truly offensive when one is truly offended.

Many disagree with you.I would find it offensive if a CATHOLIC had said it.

It was offensive, gratuitous and uncalled for.The Jewish remark was based on a stereotype? What stereotype? That Jews are whiny sissies?Have you ever been to Israel? Some of the toughest people on the planet live there. If I was a Jew I would be offended at his remark. As the Brother-in-Law of a Jew and Uncle to my Jewish niece and nephew I AM disgusted and offended about what ever “Jewy” remark was made.

Like I said don’t bother getting up we’ll do the heavy lifting for you.

Well, it is a matter of opinion when that time is. Everyone should use the same standard when deciding to be offended or accusing others of being overly politically correct. I have not always found Donohue to be so consistent.

I believe that was the insinuation of the “Jewy” remark.

What do you mean? That your opinion is “right” and mine is wrong? Let us remember the golden rule also in our comments. How would you take it if I has told you, “Don’t bother getting up. I’ll use a level head for you.” Make no mistake, you are not doing squat for me and I will feel quite free to “get up” when I choose, your little sarcasm smilie not withstanding.

If Catholics are offended, then by all means they should be able to make their complaints known. If Catholics think that complaining is just one more case of political correctness gone amok, then that too should be an opinion that is equally valid to express. There is no need for snide comments.

“It was a joke based on Catholic beliefs, not a poke at Catholic beliefs.”

Wow.You must be psychic to instantly be able to read his mind.

.**Why doesn’t he make a joke about Muslim beliefs?**Because he would wind up with his head in his lap while all MOST Catholics will do is sigh, turn the other cheek, accept the ridicule of the absolute core of our beliefs and wonder why all the comedians find Catholicism so darned funny or hateful like Louis Ck and umpteen others I could name. Please DON’t fight back, don’t send an email of protest we’ll do the heavy lifting for you.
Jon Stewart has made fun of Muslims and their beliefs plenty, I assure you. He’s an equal-opportunity offender. It’s the nature of the show. This is why televisions come with dials (or remotes), so we can choose not to watch things that offend us. It’s really that simple. TV personalities have the right to say what they want, we have the right to choose whether or not to watch it.

Jesus, and our faith, can withstand insensitive comments by people in media.

We are not Muslims, who have to declare jihad every time there is a perceived slight against their prophet.

Get a life, really. A comedian cuts his hand requiring six stitches and while the shock of the whole thing is setting in, he makes a comment that is biting, on topic, and not really funny. So what?

Now that I agree with. It was not funny. It was backwards and didn’t really make sense.

Remember the joke about the priest who was pulled over for DWI? The policeman asked him if he had been drinking. When the priest said no, he asked him what was in his travel mug. The priest told him it was just some water. The policeman picked up the mug and lifted the lid. He found it had wine in it. “Goodness gracious,” exclaimed the priest. " He’s done it again!"

Who even pays any attention any more to Donahue’s picking at nits? 🤷
I appreciate Donahue’s efforts to defend the faith. I know other Catholics who feel the same way. It only takes looking at liberal media sites such as CNN or USA Today to see just how bigoted and hateful many are towards Catholics. There is a real need to defend and explain the truth about Catholicism.

Utter nonsense. The other person was an insensitive clod who no doubt angered thousands of Jews with that remark.
I doubt it. I think this is much ado about nothing. When I hear silly jokes like Stewart’s I simply thank God I live in a country so free that people actually have the right to be silly and insensitive…

👍

We should let things like this go. Save the attack dog for REAL slights and important issues.

" Everyone should use the same standard when deciding to be offended or accusing others of being overly politically correct."…and that would be…yours???

Dream on.It is quite obvious that at least 50 per cent of the posters to this thread found it significantly offensive.YOU are not the arbiter of what is insensitive nor insulting to Catholics.Like I said if you don’t find it offensive we’ll do the heavy lifting.

Nor are you. I find the entire matter a tempest in a teapot. If some of you consider it a secular jihad against Catholicism, then consider it so and make your complaints to the television network.

I have. And I will continue to post such outrages here.I do not pretend to be such an arbiter at all but i make my feelings known.Go back and read the posters absolutist incredibly self-serving statement before taking umbrage with me,sir.I find your post very uncharitable.Do you become so easily annoyed when one has the temerity to disagree with you?

" Everyone should use the same standard when deciding to be offended or accusing others of being overly politically correct"-Ludicrous.And suggestive that we must accede to a more liberal"laugh it off" credo,to be devised by whom?

"I find the entire matter a tempest in a teapot."Many don’t and I don’t suppose you’re speaking for all Catholics many of whom disagree with you.

"If some of you consider it a secular jihad against Catholicism…"Is that supposed to be sarcastic or merely belittling to those who take offense to insults to the Eucharist?

Not funny either,
