And I thank you for your consideration of my frustration and your willingness to reply. Now, let me further ask of the same three questions as follows:
Continued in next post…
Hi, Teach CCD,
I hope you are having a very nice day. It is beautiful where I live. Sundays are very special to me. I’m grateful that the Ten Commandments include keeping the Sabbath Day holy. I’ll try and answer, perhaps briefly due to time constraints.
(1) When I speak of the King James Version I am speaking of the canonicity of scripture in its entirety not just William Tyndale’s translation. I speak of the acknowledgement of scripture and those who maintained the accuracy throughout the centuries of time. If the Church went apostate after the death of the last apostle how was scripture (New Testament) recognized as being 27 books and as being inspired at all?
The Jews were the keepers of the records that became the Bible. The Catholic compilers “borrowed” the records from the Jews. They did a good thing, generally speaking, in compiling and preserving Biblical records, but they weren’t the originators of those records.
To acknowledge a compilation as being “sacred text” does not mean it is acknowledging that the compilers have the complete and correct understanding of the compilation. The text stands by itself as either inspired or not, regardless of the compiler or even the intent of the compiler. (But I imagine most had very good intentions, except sometimes in choice of translated words and choice of whether to allow translations to occur at all.)
(2) Your understanding that God can work through imperfect people is true since He does that all the time but these imperfect people were the Church as a whole and the Church today (yours included) accepts the authority of its decision on the canonicity of Scripture. If you accept that authority what premise do you use to say that any other authority by this same group (the Church ) is not to be accepted?
The LDS use the KJV as the accepted translation, not the Vulgate or its derivatives. Authority is granted by God, and has never been an automatic given. To be preserved, authority must always acknowledge the fountain of the knowledge, and that fountain is direct revelation from God through the Holy Spirit, without the interpretations of men getting in the way.
(3) In other words, by what authority does your Church believe that the decisions rendered by those belonging to an “apostate” Church can be right in acknowledging and maintaining Scripture and be wrong in every other aspect?
“Apostate” means simply “impure with impure doctrine.” When people decided to change the doctrine to make it more acceptable or more universally compatible, then they moved in a wrong direction and away from the authority granted by God. That doesn’t make them “wrong in every other aspect.” It makes them wrong in no longer having pure doctrine, but it can still lead people to Christ and to repentance and forgiveness, just lack the sanctification process through the Holy Spirit leading to becoming a “joint heir” with Jesus Christ.
(4) You must read the verse as it is written in Matthew 16:18. Jesus said. Thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build MY CHURCH and the GATES OF HELL SHALL NOT PREVAIL. How could this possibly make sense if His Church went apostate (Non-existent) after the death of the last apostle?
Jesus had a longer view of time than one century or two or three centuries. He was omniscient, and viewed the whole of human history backwards and forwards. “Shall not prevail” means “shall not succeed”, and those gates (the closing of the door to hell) shall not succeed. Christ will open those doors at the end of the Millenium, with His keys.
Christ is the rock, the foundation, the chief corner stone. See Peter’s teachings on this subject. They are very profound. Peter also spoke about Christ visiting spirit prison (hell) and teaching those who had gone there. (1 Peter 3:18-19, 1 Peter 4:6)
(5) What Church did Jesus build?
Jesus built a church based on a foundation of apostles and prophets with Himself as the chief corner stone. The church is comprised of the believers and followers who follow Him.
(6) Why would He say that knowing that His Church would be destroyed and the “restored” some 1800 years later?
Because He knew of the prophecies about the dragon or the serpent temporarily prevailing over the saints of the most High, and it would have been important for the apostles (including especially Peter and John) to understand that even though they would see the church struggle with many impure teachings being brought in as the Jews and Gentiles would become members of the church, His work would and will ultimately prevail.
(7) If the Church went apostate then the gates of hell did prevail in destroying what Jesus built whether or not you believe it was built on Peter. What would you say to convince me that Jesus was wrong and Joseph Smith was right?
No–it didn’t destroy what Jesus built. Jesus built a pure church, with pure teachings. The pure teachings are in the Bible. Joseph Smith identified the pure teachings, and was able to bring them forward for the understanding of others and for the personal witness of the Holy Spirit to each person who wants to get the pure teachings of the Bible.
