I am sure we all know that Mormons only believe the Bible as far as it is translated correctly.

Maybe we all know that Joseph Smith, in an effort to make sure it was translated correctly, wrote his “Joseph Smith Translation”. In this, he “fixes” the Bible.

What I find offensive is, when he “fixes” Genesis 50, he actually has The Biblical Joseph making a prophesy…and he INCLUDES HIMSELF in that prophesy! He makes a prophet make a prophesy that includes himself so he can say he fullfilled it!

What an incredible ego

Genesis 50, Joseph Smith Translation

30 And again, a seer will I raise up out of the fruit of thy loins, and unto him will I give power to bring forth my word unto the seed of thy loins; and not to the bringing forth of my word only, saith the Lord, but to the convincing them of my word, which shall have already gone forth among them in the last days;
31 Wherefore the fruit of thy loins shall write, and the fruit of the loins of Judah shall write; and that which shall be written by the fruit of thy loins, and also that which shall be written by the fruit of the loins of Judah, shall grow together unto the confounding of false doctrines, and laying down of contentions, and establishing peace among the fruit of thy loins, and bringing them to a knowledge of their fathers in the latter days; and also to the knowledge of my covenants, saith the Lord.
32 And out of weakness shall he be made strong, in that day when my work shall go forth among all my people, which shall restore them, who are of the house of Israel, in the last days.
33 And that seer will I bless, and they that seek to destroy him shall be confounded; for this promise I give unto you; for I will remember you from generation to generation; and his name shall be called Joseph, and it shall be after the name of his father; and he shall be like unto you; for the thing which the Lord shall bring forth by his hand shall bring my people unto salvation.

Another TROLL post from STM, must be slow this morning in the office?

How could he fix the Hebrew, since he did not know Hebrew? 😉 Of course, he studied it later, but we don’t know what his level of competence in that language was.

One of the things most facinating about the JST is that SOME of his corrections were in fact reflected in some of our modern translations.

His additions to Genesis really do not phase me too much…IF he was a prophet from God, as he and the LDS claim, then it would follow he would not only have the authority to make such corrections but the insight and ability to do it.

I have a copy of the “Inspired Version” as well as Herald House’s “Joseph Smith Translation” a verse by verse parrallel comparison between the JST and the KJV…the RSV reflects many of the changes Joseph Smith made…so IMO, much of the objection to the changes have more to do with the fact it was Joseph Smith making the changes claiming “divine inspiration” than corrections in translation being made.

The objection of Joseph Smith making the changes really is a non-issue to me…of course he would…especially if he was a prophet.

Something I’ve always been curious about - when Joseph Smith spoke to Moroni, he says that Moroni quoted sections of Malachi differently than as most people knew them in scripture.

After telling me these things, he commenced quoting the prophecies of the Old Testament. He first quoted part of the third chapter of Malachi; and he quoted also the fourth or last chapter of the same prophecy, though with a little variation from the way it reads in our Bibles. Instead of quoting the first verse as it reads in our books, he quoted it thus: For behold, the day cometh that shall burn as an oven, and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly shall burn as stubble; for they that come shall burn them, saith the Lord of Hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. And again, he quoted the fifth verse thus: Behold, I will reveal unto you the Priesthood, by the hand of Elijah the prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. He also quoted the next verse differently: And he shall plant in the hearts of the children the promises made to the fathers, and the hearts of the children shall turn to their fathers. If it were not so, the whole earth would be utterly wasted at his coming. [Joseph Smith - History 1:36-39; Scriptures”]source]

Just to put things in perspective:

For behold, the day cometh that shall burn as an oven, and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly shall burn as stubble; for they that come shall burn them, saith the Lord of Hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch…Behold, I will reveal unto you the Priesthood, by the hand of Elijah the prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord…And he shall plant in the hearts of the children the promises made to the fathers, and the hearts of the children shall turn to their fathers. If it were not so, the whole earth would be utterly wasted at his coming. [Malachi 4:1, 5-6; Moroni]

For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch…Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse. [Malachi 4:1, 5-6; KJV]

Most notable is the addition “I will reveal unto you the Priesthood, by the hand of Elijah the prophet,” rather than the original wording of “I will send you Elijah the prophet,” which was a foretelling of John the Baptist.

Yet in the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible…he left those passages unchanged. I was just curious why, when an angel of God reveals passages in a different wording than people know, he wouldn’t change them accordingly. Can any Mormon on this forum answer that question?

I ordered a Bible from the Mormon website and got a KJV…

I believe Mormon theology is highly heretical, and that Mormons are not Christians at all. That said, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a “Joseph Smith Bible”. He did write the book of Mormon, though.

EDIT: I found the Smith translation on the LDS site. Pretty sick what he does to the Bible. 😦

How can anyone follow such a man? He literally translated it horribly compared to the original Greek-Hebrew!

Double-edit: It seems Joseph Smith translated Joseph (Jacob’s son) as himself.

Seriously, how can anyone follow such a person? I just don’t get it.

As I understand it, your points are an issue between the RLDS and the LDS…the RLDS publish the IV and it is one of their “Standard Works”…the LDS claim the JST was not completed so it is not used as a “Standard Work”…howeveer they do cite the JST as alternate readings in the KJV they publish…this is what I’ve heard…I don’t have an LDS KJV Bible…the LDS do use the Pearl of Great Price as scripture, which contains the “Book of Moses” which is the JST as I understand…in the PoGP they have a chapter of Matthew also from the JST.

Oh it is more rich than that. Joseph Smith is now a God. Mormons believe that if they are good enough they themselves will become a God and rule their own worlds and people. Brigham Young taught that Adam is our God. That there is a consul of gods and that Jesus and Satan are bothers. There is some seriously wacky stuff in the LDS beliefs. Blood Atonement is another one that is “interesting”. The blood shed by Jesus Christ on the cross was not enough to redeem for certain crimes and only by the spilling of your own blood could you be redeemed. Baptism for the dead is another anti-biblical teaching of the LDS. The fact is, the LDS church is polytheistic and therefore not Christian in the slightest.

now starting to doubt you a little re: your profile. Regardless, could you provide evidence of your claims?

dhomoney,
I have a seperate thread on this, where you will discover the error in your catechism
Both LDS and RCC believe “man may become God” You can educate yourself in the other thread, and your catechism (#460)

Because he’s being honest about his thoughts on something that should be pretty objective to prove?

I think you’re the only one that has come to that conclusion.

It was explained quite extensively to you on that thread, but it appears you are not willing to accept it.

BTW, your post is totally off topic for this thread.

I’m very sorry…I don’t have any books here at work to reference.

As far as you doubting my profile…Friend Thomas, am I to understand that because I do not disparage the LDS or RLDS or Joseph Smith, nor do I condemn them for their beliefs that your conclusion is that I am not truly a Quaker? LOL…you REALLY don’t know too many Friends do you?

My Dad told me about Joseph Smith, the angel Moroni and the golden plates when I was pretty young. But I remember thinking the guy was quite possibly mentally ill, in part because he lived in the 1800’s but the angel spoke in Elizabethan English of the KJV, when he was dictating the Book of Mormon.

I used to have a mentally ill friend who was dedicating his life to “rewriting the Bible”. He wasn’t in any particular religion, but he had two hallucinatory figures who told him some pretty off the wall stuff, which he wrote down, filling at least a hundred notebooks.

As for “following” Joseph Smith, he was one of several men (and women) who founded adventist types of religious movements in the USA during the 1800’s.

I still think their clean living, family oriented lifestyle is appealing, until you get to the polygamy sects and all that. Calling yourself a Prophet is a way to have control over others. You are a god, and people who are searching may end up “finding” YOU.
