A judge on Thursday refused to drop grand larceny and other charges filed against a Monsignor who is accused of stealing more than a $1 million from his parish.
The indictment charges the Monsignor with grand larceny, filing a false tax return, filing false business records and other crimes. Prosecutors said he funneled at least $820,800 of church money, including donations from parishioners, into his own bank accounts.
The Monsignor’s lawyers complained that prosecutors refused to call a Canon Law expert to tell the grand jury the defendant could have felt under church rules that he had a “claim of right” to the money he was accused of stealing.
