Well, we have a “Take down John A MacDonald’s name and statues”. John A MacDonald is the founding father of the modern Canada. That’s equivalent to remove any mention of Washington.

did the native tribes respect other native tribes that they killed for land, etc. it was a way of life: right or wrong.

Someone told me once that when religious statues have their heads or hands cut off this is often the work of Muslims. If so then this act may not have anything to do with the Saint but with a hatred for Catholicism.

In this case, I think that claim is a bit far fetched. There are plenty of tried and true Americans willing to do this kind of property damage. I think those sort of rumors are perpetuated by the anti-islamic crowd. As good Catholics we should do all we can to ensure that we don’t assign blame willy-nilly.

As long as we are speculating on motivation this is just as valid as any other, such as a dislike because of perceptions about the treatment of Indians.

I don’t know that this is just a rumor. Muslims are well known iconoclasts. There are current news stories about it. Images of Jesus and the Blessed Virgin would be offensive to them, but so would a saint.

I agree we shouldn’t just assume Muslims did it.

In this case, where we are pretty sure we know the perps, (angry and maladjusted millennials angry at the loss of a culture they don’t really know) it’s really an offense against the virtue of charity to and an inflammatory claim about a 3rd party.
 
My grandparents spoke Irish in Irish speaking communities. None of the 60 odd grand children speak Irish. Please don’t assume no European had these sorts of issues. The decline of certain cultures was not for the sake of Christianity. That appears to be a red herring.

This is sad to hear. I know some Gaelic speakers. The language is doing well in the west of Ireland. I think Irish kids still learn it in school.
 
To be fair, there’s a huge difference between parents not teaching a language and a group of people who were actively oppressed.

I imagine that it is likely that NA Saints from outside the western coast are not as likely to have statues on the western coast. Also keep in mind that the indigenous people of what is now the USA were pushed westward. I think that on the west coast you will find more people with indigenous heritage. Speaking of which didn’t some part of Washington State decide to celebrate American Heritage Day instead of Columbus Day?

Yes, as I understand it children could be punished for speaking the native language; it was beat out of them. And you don’t have to suppress a language for more than a generation to put it in a state where usage continues to decline.

Since oppression, especially today, means just being made fun of, I can join a victim class. My grandmother grew up not speaking English in America. She was mocked terribly particularly by school kids.
 
Good. Who cares. Irish should be made manditory. It ha salways bothered me that the us speaks english, who should have adopted german or french just to not speak the same language as the lobster bellied tyrants.

It is essential that the language of an ousted empire be banned so that the youth will not be corrupted by propaganda in same-language media.
