I have just a few questions
1- Where does it say in the Bible that Mary was sinless?
2- Where does it say in the Bible that it is ok for sinful man to change the word of God?
3- Where does it talk in the Bible about purgetory?
4- Where does it say in the Bible to pray the rosery as pentence for sin?
5- Where does it talk in the Bible about the assumption of Mary?
6- Where does it talk in the Bible about baptizing baby’s?
7- Where does it talk in the Bible about mortal and veneul sins?
8- How come you hardly ever see a Catholic carry a Bible to a Mass?
I have many more questions that I will ask later. Thanks for your time.
As noted above, if you truly wish to know what the Church teaches, the Catechism of the Catholic Church is probably the best place to start. Then you can ask more focused questions here if need be:

christusrex.org/www1/CDHN/ccc.html

A good site I’ve found that answers many of these questions rather well from Scriptural and History:

home.inreach.com/bstanley/index.htm

It’s not that the Church is not Scriptural, pretty much everything we believe can be found in Scripture, people just disagree with the Church’s interpretation because it conflits with their own.

8- How come you hardly ever see a Catholic carry a Bible to a Mass?
Hi oudave, I don’t bring my bible to Church, I bring my missal. I bring my bible to bible study.

oudave said:
6- Where does it talk in the Bible about baptizing baby’s?

It is mentioned in the bible that households were baptized. It does not say the infants were excluded.

SPOKENWORD:
Hi Mt. Quite the assumptions you make about protestant services. So you think topics just pop up out of the blue. Do you know how much preparation and study go into the weekly teachings. You really dont know what you are talking about and are only making some false statements. God Bless
Hi Spokenword, I used to attend Evangelical/protestant services also and it was my experience that the Preacher spoke about whatever he felt he should speak about. There was no order to what was studied or discussed. I’m not saying there wasn’t alot of effort put into it, but what was discussed depended on what inspired him at the time.

Peace.

Dearest oudave

All of your questions assume that the Bible is the sole source of doctrine and authority, so I ask you: Where in the Bible does it say that the Bible is the sole source of doctrine and authority?

Notwithstanding your fatal assumption:

1. - Scripture supporting the Immaculate Conception include:
Lk 1:28 - “hail, full of grace, [or highly favored one]”
Lk 1:30 - “you have found favor with God.”
Lk 1:37 - “for with God nothing is impossible”
Gn 3:15 - complete enmity between the “woman” and Satan - i.e. sin"
Ex. 25:11-21 - the “ark made of purest gold for God’s word” is an allusion to Mary.

**2. ** I agree that it is not acceptable for a sinful man to change the word of God. But that’s not really the issue, is it. Your question assumes that the Catholic Church has changed the word of God, but in fact history proves that it is the protestant churches that have changed the word of God. It is the consistent Catholic interpretation of the word of God which you reject, but I urge you to take another look at the Catholic view of scripture, with an open mind and a heart open to God’s love

3. Scripture supporting Purgatory
Mt. 5:48 - must be perfect as your heavenly father is perfect (more than just “covered” by Jesus sacrifice as protestants believe) See also Heb. 12:14 - “strive for that holiness without which you cannot see God.”
Rev. 21:27 - nothing unclean shall enter heaven (i.e. there is a need for purgatory)
2 Sam 12:13-14 - David, though forgiven was punished for his sin. (The idea of temporal punishment for sins.)
Mt. 5:26 - you shall not be released until you’ve paid the last penny (i.e. in purgatory)
1 Cor. 3:15 - sinful man will be saved, but by fire (in purgatory)
1 Pet 3:18-20 Jesus preached to the spirits in prison (not Hell, because there is no escape from Hell, and not Heaven because there is no need, so where was Jesus when he preached to these imprisoned souls - purgatory.)

CONTINUED FROM EARLIER POST…

Dear oudave;

To continue:

4. Rosary as “pentence” (penitence?) for sins?

I’m not sure I understand the question, but it appears that you do not have an understanding of the Rosary. The Rosary is a meditative prayer in which the participants contemplate the events of the life of Jesus Christ. Catholics do not believe that saying the Rosary results in the forgiveness of sins, although in some cases saying the Rosary may result in the reduction of temporal punishment for previously forgiven sins (a long discussion for another string.) There is, of course, scriptural support for the Hail Mary which is the sort of “glue” that holds the Rosary together: Read Luke, Chapter 1.

5. Scriptural Support for the Assumption of Mary

First, do you believe Enoch was assumed into Heaven without dying: Gn. 5:24
Do you believe that Elijah was assumed into Heaven in a fiery chariot? 2 Kg 2:11
Then why can’t you believe that Jesus would show the same respect for his mother that he showed to his prophets of the OT? The assumption is certainly not contrary to scripture.

**6. Scriptural authority for baptising “baby’s” ** (baby’s what? head? bottom? 😃 )

Jn 3:5 Mk 16:16 - baptism is required for entering Heaven.
Acts 16:31 - believe in Jesus and you and your house will be saved (i.e. even the infants)
Acts 16:15 - she was baptized, with all her household.
Acts 16:33 - he and all in his house were baptized.
1 Cor. 1:16 - I baptized the household of Stephanus

See also: St. Hippolytus of Rome (c. 215 AD) Baptize first the children; and if they can speak for themselves, let them do so, otherwise, let their parents or other relatives speak for them."
Origen (post 244 A.D) “the Church received from the apostles the tradition of giving baptism also to infants.”
St. Cyprian of Carthage - the council of Carthage condemned the opinion that infants must wait until the 8th day after birth (as with circumscision) to receive baptism.

7. Scriptural support for mortal and venial sins

(many othger good cites in this thread. I’ll add a few more:
Rom 2:5-8 - God will repay each man according to his works
2 Cor. 5:10 - recompense according to what each has done in the body.
2 Cor. 11:15 - their end will correspond to their deeds.
1 Pet. 1:17 - God judges impartially according to one’s works
Rev. 20:12-13 - dead are judged according to their deeds.
  1. Why no Bibles carried to Mass?
First, the Mass is not a bible study, it is worship. Second, Catholic Churches have missals that contain the readings for the day from the Scriptures. (On most occasions, the Liturgy includes two readings from the OT, one psalm, and one reading from the NT, but this varies occasionally. If one were to attend Mass every day for a three year period, one would sit through what amounts to most of the Bible. So, your question - which assumes that Catholics do not hear the word of God on Sunday at the Mass is WAY off base.

I doubt that I will hear from you in response, as you have not posted a single reply to any of the information that has been provided. But I wanted to include the above information to give you something to ponder if and when you return to this site. The Catholic Church is not what you seem to think it is. I invite you to look further into what the Church is, what it teaches, and what it offers to all of God’s children.

Peace be with you

When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary to tell her that she was going to be the Mother of the Savior, he said to her: Hail, Mary, FULL OF GRACE. Can you honestly believe that God would allow his Son, who was purity itself, to be born of a woman who was a sinner?? NO! If she was a sinner she would not be worthy of being his mother! The Mother of Jesus had to be as pure and holy as he was. God created Mary sinless because she was to be the Mother of our Savior.
The first thing I would like to say is that GRACE does not mean
sinnless. Second, the Bible says that ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Read Rom 3:23 and Rom 5:12. Jesus not only died for my sin, but the sin of everyone, including Mary. No question that Mary was an incredable and wonderful woman but scripture clearly says that ALL have sinned except Jesus.
May God bless you and your family.

No it says ALL have sinned, Jesus is part of ALL.

So Jesus must me a sinner too.

It is obvious that you want to restrict all answers to THE BIBLE. That means you are a “Bible-Only, Sola Scriptura” Protestant.
I will address 7 of your questions with one answer!

Questions 1 thru’7 are"Where does it TALK in the Bible" and Qs #1 & 2 are "Where does it SAY in the Bible.

My good Sir, Bibles can’t talk, so a Bible can’t talk to tell you a thing. Where does it SAY? Bibles can’t SAY anything…WAKE UP MAGEE!

An answer to a question from the Bible. What verse of the Bible indicates that Mary was sinless? TRY LUKE1: v 28. “And the Angel being come in, said to her : Hail, Mary, Full of Grace, the Lord is with thee: Blessed art thou among women”.

Hail, Mary, FULL of Grace, is the greatest share of devine graces given to any creature].( Grace = a gratuious GIFT from God)

The Angel was a messenger from God. Will an Angel lie? The Angel said Mary was FULL OF GRACE. That means full, full, full. If she and her soul was FULL of Grace…there is no room for evilness, for wrongness - she had no Room for sin in her soul, why? An Angel had told her that, thats why. Since Mary was concieved without the stain of Original Sin - she didnt even have that sin. What’s your problem with not wanting to allow GOD to prepare a perfect vessel for His only Son.

Would you prefer that God sent His Son to spend 9 months inside a sinful woman? I would not.

You asked for a Bible verse - I gave you the defining verse.👋

ALSO: See Isaias7:1 - 17, Micheas 5:2 & 3, Jeremias 31:22.

(if a cup is full of water, how much more can you put in the cup?)

Yes, FULL OF GRACE means sinless. Sanctifying grace is the Divine Life of God. Full of Grace means full of God’s own Divine Life. God and sin do not co-exist.

You believe the Bible, don’t you? The Greek word translated as “all” in Romans 3:23 and 5:12 is “pas.” Pas doesn’t mean each and every person. For example:
  • 1 Cor 15:22: “For just as in Adam all pas] die, so too in Christ shall all pas] be brought to life…” But not “all” die. Enoch and Elijah didn’t die but were assumed into heaven while they were still alive (Gen 5:24; Heb 11:5; 2 Kings 2:11). So “all” didn’t mean Enoch and Elijah, did it? Will “all” be brought to life as the second part of that verse says? Well, no. Some people will choose not to follow Christ Jesus – so their choice will be eternal death.
  • Was each and every person in Judea baptized by Jesus in the Jordan river, as it says “all” pas] were in Mt 3:5-6? Uh uh.
  • Rom 15:14: “I myself am convinced about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with “all” [pas] knowledge . . .” . You believe that literally? Ain’t no human being filled with ALL knowledge, my friend. That’s a description of God.
There’s what a word says on the surface, and there’s what a word means.

The Bible wasn’t written in English, don’tchaknow?

When are you going to answer my questions about the Bible?

I do not need to carry my bible to church as the shurch itself holds many bibles that are the same as mine.
Best place I know of purgatory is → 1 corinthians: 3:11 - 16
The following is the reason for Paul stating what he says in verses 11-16. It does not have to do with pergatory it has to do with the Judgement seat of Christ 2 Corinthians 5, which is not the same as the Great White Throne Judgement that you read about in The Revelation of Jesus Christ 20:11-15. Paul here is addressing born again believers as directed by none other than Jesus Himself. John 3.
1 Corinthians 3:1-10 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
1 Corinthians 3:11-16 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
2 Corinthians 5:1-11 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

I hope this helps.

I need to ask; have you really read the genealogies of Jesus presented in Matthew and Luke? You will find that from the human realm he was descended from one who lied to save his skin and marriage, one who committed incest, an harlot, an adulterer etc. That is just a sampling. You know when they accused Jesus of being a Samaritan Jesus didn’t deny it? David’s great grandmother was none other than Ruth the Moabitess who married Boaz, and who was the widow of Naomi’s son.

John 8:48-50 Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me. And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
He did not deny the Samaritan blood; but He did deny having a devil or demon.

It really surprised me when I read all of this, but true it is.

OuDave,

May you have a most Holy Blessed Christmas. Thank you for coming here to seek answers to your questions. I can see that you have some misunderstanding of what we as Catholics believe. I’m so glad you decided to ask us, rather than continue to pre-judge us.

I’d like to touch on your Question #2, because of all, this one, once understood, should help you to be more open to answers on all the others.

2- Where does it say in the Bible that it is ok for sinful man to change the word of God?
I would have a problem with a religion based on a changed Bible myself, as the Bible is the Revealed word of God, given to us for our salvation. God revealed the Old Testament to Moses, David, various Prophets and more so that the Chosen People could come to know Him (and that we might subsequently come to know Him).

Christ and the Apostles then received the remainder in the New Testament, much of which has been retained in what we call Sacred Tradition, but if you’re not Catholic, as I see from your questions, than you should be happy to learn that Sacred Tradition NEVER contradicts the Sacred Word of the Bible.

As has been stated above, it has actually been the Protestants who have changed the Bible, when Martin Luther added a word and dropped several books. :crying:

He even tried to drop the epistle of James and Revelations. His buddies let him know this wouldn’t fly, but he published an edition without them.

We, as a church, take our bible VERY seriously, even if we don’t use it quite the same as you have come to expect. But the retention of correct translations is serious business.

It’s late, I have to leave to pick-up my cousin at the airport.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

where does it say in the Bible that what is written there is the only source of Divine Revelation, and the only guide for interpreting what is written?
The Old Testament would take a long time and too many quotes for this post but you can cross reference many of these to Old Testament Prophets and what they were inspired to write. I have been looking into this for a long time.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
Hebrews 1:1-3 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
2 Peter 1:19-21 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
Revelation 1:11-20 Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea. And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength. And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter; The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

As for John 21:24-25 This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true. And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
I believe what John is saying here that there is enough information for us to believe on Jesus and the world could not contain all the things He did do. We only have a sampling of all Jesus did for those in His earthly ministry, but it is enough to prove Who He is and what He will do for us. We can trust Him.

Luther rejected Hebrews, James, Jude, and Revelaton, in addition to rejecting 7 writings and parts of Esther and Daniel in the OT. He removed all them from the canonical writings and put them in a separate appendix at the back of his German Bible, which he translated 1522-34. He left the pages of the appendix unnumbered, lest any should make the mistake of thinking these writings were Scripture:p. The NT books were restored later by Luther’s followers. So Protestants have the same 27 books that Catholics recognize as the New Testament, but their incomplete Bibles are still missing the OT writings that were Scripture to Jesus, the Apostles, all of the sacred writers of the NT, and the first Christians.

Even though Luther cut 11 books out of the Bible, his followers to this day claim that their cut version of the Bible is the only rule of faith and morals and extol Luther as a hero for restoring “biblical Christianity.” Go figure.

Luther didn’t put the NT writings back – his followers did some time after Luther died. His German translation has them in a separate appendix at the back, with prefaces explaining why he rejected the writings. He said his followers could read them if they wanted to, but that they were not “Scripture” in his estimation.

With all due respect, you have supported the position contrary to your hypothesis…

New Heart said:

This verse has been gone over too many times to be counted. If it proves anything, it proves too much, because the only “Scripture” that Timothy would have known is the Old Testament. I may be mistaken, but I don’t think you want to argue that the New Testament is unnecessary. Furthermore, according to your quote, Paul says Scripture is profitable, not sufficient. This quote in no way supports the hypothesis that the Bible is all we need.

New Heart said:
Hebrews 1:1-3 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; [emphasis mine]

Sorry, but there is nothing in here about the written word (Scripture). If anything, this refers to the spoken words of Christ, which is what Catholics call Sacred Tradition.

New Heart said:

Again, more reference to the spoken words of prophecy, and not Scripture. In fact, if this passage has anything to say about Scripture, it is that Scripture is not to be interpreted privately. This is actually support for the teaching authority of the majesterium of the Catholic Church.

I don’t see where this passage has anytyhing to do with the sufficiency of Scripture. John (since he was exiled on Patmos at the time) was commanded to write what he saw concerning the specific 7 churches mentioned, in order that they might be able to receive the revelation (as John couldn’t personally deliver it). I think it makes a great deal more sense that such an important message of Divine origin would be delivered personally from the Apostle (if possible) than just written and delivered to them, don’t you?
New Heart:
As for John 21:24-25 This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true. And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
I believe what John is saying here that there is enough information for us to believe on Jesus and the world could not contain all the things He did do. We only have a sampling of all Jesus did for those in His earthly ministry, but it is enough to prove Who He is and what He will do for us. We can trust Him.
Yes, John Gospel is just a sampling of what Christ did and said. However, he taught John, and did so many more things that the world couldn’t hold all the books. When John preached the Gospel of Christ, do you think he just restricted what he said to those things he might later write down? Don’t you think it is more likely that he drew on the whole deposit of Revelation that Christ gave him?

Would you rather base your theology on a subset of what Christ taught, or on the whole of it?

Angels are God’s messengers.

Could you rephrase your questions, please.
