a priest once told us that that is how we are to evangelize… like St. Francis with the preaching by action.

I do make the Sign of The Cross in public, when at restaurants, or just at my desk, before I eat my meal. To me, it is more than evangelization. It is me not denying who I am and who my Lord is.

Yes we do. Not only that but we pray the grace aloud. Quietly of course, but not silently.
Never had a problem.

I usually begin grace with the sign of the cross when in public and end it the same way.
I think in this modern day it is important not to conceal our faith in public and give honor where honor is due.
I don’t think prayer in public should be different from prayer in private, except that we don’t pray as loudly.

Yes I do sign myself when I’m in public. As a protestant for 25 years my family always prayed in public. Now that I am Catholic I see the sign of the cross as more than just a novel addition but sign and reminder of whose and what I am.

Yes, my husband and I make the Sign of the Cross and say Grace softly but aloud just as we do at home.

You betcha! Make the sign of the cross, pray and then make the sign of the cross again. I don’t yell out the prayer, but yes, I say it. I’m not the least bit embarrassed to do so and I have never been criticized for it, not ever.

I take the bus to and from work everyday and on the way home we pass the Guadalupe Cathedral downtown. I always try and make the sign of the cross when passing the Cathedral. At first it was a little embarassing because people would catch the movement out of the side of their eye and stare. But as I’ve been doing it more I notice other people starting to do it occasionally too. Sometimes the smallest things can have an impact.

I think that this is great, and a resurection of a lost tradition of sorts. I try my best to remember to cross myself when I pass by a parish in honor of our Lord.

I didn’t used to cross myself and say grace before a meal in public, but I sure do now. Not to do this, I think, is telling Jesus that you are ashamed to be associated with Him. What does he say: That if we deny Him before His Father, He will deny us. I don’t think I want to be accused of that especially when the Spirit is convicting me and I know it.

I cross myself when I eat in public. I also cross myself whenever passing a Catholic Church. I was a little embarrassed to do it initially, but now I’m proud to do it. I’ve had a couple of occasions where people have approached me and started chatting about being Catholic, which is very exciting. I’m happy to share my faith even in a small way such as this!

I cannot think of any time that is inappropriate for “evangelization by example”. That is really what we are talking about here. It is living out your life of faith each day and in all things.

About making the sign of the Cross when passing a church…We know that Jesus is present there…Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity…so it is a great time to acknowledge Him and our faith and make the sign of the Cross when passing Him on the road!
As for making the s.of the c. in public—there has been times where I don’t and we just say our grace together…but most times we do. After this thread we will be sure to not omit this portion of our prayer & identity! Thanks for all of you convicting me on this!!

My wife and I make it a point to try and have dinner as a family as often as possible. Sometimes I work late and it’s just not fair to the kids to have to wait me out, but I digress. We always say grace and recite either a Hail Mary or Our Father as a Family. My wife printed out a copy of the prayer and taped it to the window door right by the table so the little one’s can read it. A few years back, we started doing the same in restaurants. I did not grow up with either practice. I also started doing it when I took out my family to dinner. Of course, lately we have not been going out much at all. It’s working to make public expressions of faith a normal part of my children’s lives.

We never made the sign of the cross, but we do pray aloud and ask the Lord to draw those present to Him…I have noticed people looking our way and also had believers come up and make comments…peace to you…Kim
