Just curious - why do non-Catholics hang here?

I’ve noticed that there are many non-Catholic members here. I’m really curious why they hang out on a Catholic site? I’m not asking this in a judging or nasty way, I’m truly curious. Why would someone who is clearly not in agreement with the Catholic Faith want to spend time in a place where what they probably do believe is constantly disagreed with?

What do non-Catholics get out of being here, I guess is what I’m wondering.

Why has a Catholic website created a “Non-Catholic Religions” discussion board?

Because we like talking to you LDS.
It gets boring talking to just Catholics all the time, we end up agreeing and then just complaining about bad Catholics and then patting each other on the back.
We need some healthy discussion.

God Bless

Oh, you are right about that! But CAF is only a little bit better. Not that big a difference.
Actually, in my experience there’s an huge difference, but perception is only reality to the perceiver.

The other two questions were in jest. To answer yours:

The other side of - the mountain?

What if you couldn’t?

That’s all folks!

I came here to gain a better understanding of the Catholic faith when I was considering converting. Although I am not actively considering converting at this time (but who knows?), I continue to stay to increase my knowledge and because the discussions are usually fairly interesting.

I am considering becoming a taunter. Or perhaps a lurker. I think lurking will take less effort but taunting will be more rewarding.
Yeah, but there’s a risk, lurking is a one-way street and taunting is an Interstate with frequent head-on collisions. 😃

Personally, I have no interest in starting threads, taunting, or converting anyone, but will reply to correct erroneous information and to answer specific questions in which I have some knowledge.
Funny, I was thinking the same thing, except that I’m Catholic. In my day-to-day life I encounter the most incredible misperceptions about what the Catholic Church teaches from people of all backgrounds, including many Catholics! On those occasions that I get into religious discussions, it’s typically to correct some gross misunderstanding. I’ve gotten to the point in my life where I see the futility in most religious discussions, but when someone comes up with a humdinger, I can’t stand it.

For my part, I come here to learn more about my faith and the threads where there is civil, honest discussions that challenge my faith are my favorites. I’m glad it isn’t a place where only Catholics or even only Christians come to bicker over what are often trivial differences of opinion.

I would think so that they could gain knowledge of the Catholic faith. When I joined, I was a fallen-away Catholic and now I’ve found the path back, thanks to some here who offered advice, prayers and support. 🙂

I stumbled in here to help myself discern the differences between my Baptist faith and Catholicism. Glad I did, as two years later I am on my parish’s RCIA team.😃

Some may ‘hang here’ because they may be curious and can’t really go to anyone in their own faith to talk about it. Others ‘hang here’ to tug and pull and hope they can get a Catholic to lapse, maybe even jump ship. Those people carry a large, heavy burden, because those ‘lost souls’ will not forget who tricked them into leaving the True Church.

I originally came here a couple of years ago after having found out about it from Jimmy Aiken’s webpage. I had been investigating some Catholic teachings.

I was raised Catholic and had been considering giving the faith another shake, so came to see what I thought. Now I hang out sometimes because there is interesting theological discussion and because I’ve made some friends here.

Hi,

I forgot to say that I have also met some great people here that I chat privately with:D Hi friends:wave:

What would you do without us:p
I would imagine we would alternate between daily debates about hand holding during the Our Father, and whether or not we should all be speaking Latin:p .

I’m not sure why alot of non-Catholics have come, but I enjoy the new perspectives immensely. Plus most of yall are very nice people in general, so of course that’s a big plus.

Wow! Thanks to everyone who posted here! This really is exactly what I was looking for, and what I sort of expected to hear. I just didn’t want to make any assumptions.

I agree with many of the points - an all Catholic place gets boring, and a “beat 'em up” Protestant board is just exhausting. This is a nice middle ground, and my favorite Catholic forum site I’ve found. It does allow one to grow in their Faith when they are able to discuss and civilly debate with others, it forces you to think about what you do truly believe and why.

Thanks! 😃 Keep on postin’!!

Well, I found this place by accident! Actually, I have been considering converting to Catholicism for some time since both of my adult children are in the process. Also, I am growing tired of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod becoming more and more like any other main-stream Protestant church.

I find the discussions very stimulating and I am able to have many questions answered here.

Plus, Roman Catholics do church like it should be done! 😃

I was brought up in a pretty extremist, isolated family ‘bubble’ (probably even by the standards of many here) and, ever since I got out of that I’ve been curious about that mindset and what makes people so devoted to religion. I just don’t get it, and I’d like to understand; and considering I was brought up that way, Catholicism provides the easiest frame of reference for me. And if I can help people on the ‘other side’ understand where non-theists and former Catholics are coming from – so much the better 🙂

I believe there are some of them here who want to learn more in an attempt to ascertain if they want to convert.

Some are here to learn more simply to understand due to a family member or friend being a Catholic.

And many are here to try and make us question our faith, poke fun at us, or just to “have fun” stirring things up.

I’ve seen this site listed on other sites including muslim sites, pagen sites, Protestant sites, etc… And yes, I was there trying to defend Catholicism. When I realized how much I hated people doing that on this site, I appologized to all those members of other forums and quit.

I know it won’t work, but I would ask that those here to try and convert us, or anger us, leave.

Those that are truely here to learn, I would only caution that if you ask a question, then question the legitimacy of our answer compared to your religion, then you are probably gonna get an arguement. So choose your question wisely and be prepared for a very biased, Catholic, answer.

I can’t speak for all of us but I’m simply trying to learn. I’ve been reading books by Catholic authors and they’ve gotten me thinking about converting. I’m now reading the Essential Catholic Catechism (Alan Schreck).
