I can understand that in an international setting. And had I courted a young “shela” (is that what you call them?) I would have overlooked the distinction, but had I met a nice young American woman, and I said I played football, and she said “american football”? Or if my nice young fiancee introduced me to her family and friends as “This is hoosier Daddy, and he likes American Football, his favorite American Football team is the Beastly Beasts.” Then, I would leave that NPR listening, wine snobbing, social situation faster than you could say touchdown!I love American football, but here in Australia there are four (maybe even five) other sports people would assume you were more likely talking about if you said “football”. And all of them involve using the foot a lot more than does American football.![]()
