Just how Catholic are you? Can this test tell you where you stand?

This survey was conducted exclusively on behalf of The Irish Times by Ipsos MRBI, among a national quota sample of 1000 representative of the circa 3.4 million adults aged 18 upwards, covering 100 sampling points throughout all constituencies in the Republic of Ireland.

Does it hold up for you?

Thanks for sharing that. Yeah I saw that, though I’d question some of their survey questions - do you “perform” the sacraments every week? Am I mistaken or is “perform” the wrong word there. Also, do you have a deep “adoration” of Mary - no, we venerate her.

These recent polls that are coming out, I’m guessing their aim is not to build up the Church but to undermine it’s authority and relevance today,as in, listen, even Catholics don’t believe this stuff! The questions on this particular survey display huge ignorance, though it is fair to admit that faithful practising Catholics are in a minority - even in the Church.

The other recent poll commissioned by the liberal Association of Catholic Priests in Ireland displayed a similar motive of undermining the Church. I couldn’t believe one of the questions - the priests who claim they are working for the Church asked if laypeople should elect their own Bishops in a democratic vote - basically serving their own egos and turning the election of a Bishop into a popularity contest. God help us.

Yes to all five!

Does that mean I’m Irish Catholic? 😃

They used to, you know, in some places in Europe, in Italy I know. Villages used to pick their priests, too.

I was going to say something about that, too. St. Martin tried to hide in the woods from the people to avoid being made bishop, but they tricked him into coming into town where he was proclaimed bishop by the people.

Of course, that was some 1500 + years ago.

St. Martin - patron saint of soldiers. Often invoked as my middle son is in the military.

1, 2, 3, and 5. I accept the vast majority of the magisterium, but I am not Catholic. Not yet.

“Perform” the sacraments? Well since I don’t have orders, I can only perform two, baptism and marriage. But not every week

Never adored Mary. I’m uncomfortable with the idea of worshiping her as a Goddess.

Seriously, Irish Times? *No one *on your staff caught those inaccuracies?

No wonder the Irish Church is a mess.

don’t all christans believe that Jesus was born of a virgin? i think they are mixing up the immaculate conception with the virgin birth.

Good morning, all,

I don’t need the Irish Times survey to know what kind of Catholic I am. I have a very good conscience to keep me informed, as well as the Holy Spirit, my guardian angel, Catholic friends and my confessor priest.

One must answer YES to each of the 5 questions. Otherwise one is a CINO. Catholic In Name Only, in my opinion.

Let us remember the Nicene Creed we say at most Masses. Our Creed was written down in the 300s because, by then, it was clear too many followers of Christ had too many different understandings. It is so easy to misunderstand when one has not been properly taught.

Let us also remember:

Matthew 16: 13-19 where Christ establishes His Church and gives Peter authority.

Luke 22: 14-20 where Christ creates the Holy Eucharist and enpowers the Apostles to recreate the Holy Eucharist.

John 20: 19-23 where the Risen Christ empowers the Apostles to forgive sin.

Christ either told the Truth or He lied.

We either believe and accept that Truth or we do not. It may be hard to fully understand it, but we are called to Trust Christ. And then live our lives as best we can staying true to the Truth. We should not water it down or reject parts of it as being not important. To the degree we think we are RIGHT to water down or reject we become CINOs or less.

Wait, don’t we already have a test? It’s called the Nicene Creed. 😛

Well, I do suppose it’s more a test for Christians, not specifically Catholics.

Thank you for the clarification.
The “survey questions” sound as if they were
written by some silly kid who has never attended
even one Catechism class. Awkward and so silly.

The Irish Times? Good for wrapping up trash.

I have to ask why anyone who is Catholic would object to adoring Mary.
It is not as if anyone would require you to spend one hour in a room with a consecrated Eucharist to adore her.

Adoration of the Eucharist is one thing.

Adoring Mary, well that is another thing and I don’t think it is even close to worship to do it.

I have the most difficult issue with attending mass every week. That should be the easiest thing for me to do, but it’s actually what I have the most difficulty with. I keep God on my mind at all times, but getting up on time and getting my butt to mass is haarrdd. I wish church was open 24/7, so I could just come at the beginning of any hour. 😛

I accept the rest happily.

Adoration in the chapel close to me is open 24/7. With volunteers present at all times that sign up for it hourly.

I would never have made it as long as I have if it were not for attending Mass regularly.

Especially when I make the effort after being hung over, or having to run 19 or twenty laps around the track and then shower and dress up and go.

And, I don’t even believe and I go.

Maybe I’ve misunderstood you?

As Catholics, we know we are to adore God Alone.
That has been the case, forever.

Discipline is just hard for me. I have difficulty keeping a schedule in regards to all things. I sleep too late or I get lost in my own brain for so long that time just passes. Is my depression. I rarely leave the house for anything.
