Perhaps the Protestants on these boards can make something clear for me. Very short answers are OK:
  1. In the Gospels, what does **Jesus **teach about justification? Examples?
  2. In his epistles, what does St. Paul teach about justification? Examples?
  3. Whose teaching on justification takes precedence (i.e. is the basis for all teaching on justification) --Jesus or St. Paul? How so?
If you think they are one and the same, please provide some examples. Thanks. 🙂

C’mon, Protestants – this couldn’t be that hard of a question.

Your questions imply that the Gospels and the Epistles contradict. Nothing can be further from the truth. The Gospels, Epistles and the OT all agree and express the same message. The Just shall live by faith.

From the Belgic Confession of faith
Article 22: The Righteousness of Faith

We believe that for us to acquire the true knowledge of this great mystery the Holy Spirit kindles in our hearts a true faith that embraces Jesus Christ, with all his merits, and makes him its own, and no longer looks for anything apart from him.
For it must necessarily follow that either all that is required for our salvation is not in Christ or, if all is in him, then he who has Christ by faith has his salvation entirely.

Therefore, to say that Christ is not enough but that something else is needed as well is a most enormous blasphemy against God-- for it then would follow that Jesus Christ is only half a Savior. And therefore we justly say with Paul that we are justified “by faith alone” or by faith “apart from works.”^53

However, we do not mean, properly speaking, that it is faith itself that justifies us-- for faith is only the instrument by which we embrace Christ, our righteousness.

But Jesus Christ is our righteousness in making available to us all his merits and all the holy works he has done for us and in our place. And faith is the instrument that keeps us in communion with him and with all his benefits.

When those benefits are made ours they are more than enough to absolve us of our sins.

^53 Rom. 3:28

Article 23: The Justification of Sinners

We believe that our blessedness lies in the forgiveness of our sins because of Jesus Christ, and that in it our righteousness before God is contained, as David and Paul teach us when they declare that man blessed to whom God grants righteousness apart from works.^54
And the same apostle says that we are justified “freely” or “by grace” through redemption in Jesus Christ.^55 And therefore we cling to this foundation, which is firm forever, giving all glory to God, humbling ourselves, and recognizing ourselves as we are; not claiming a thing for ourselves or our merits and leaning and resting on the sole obedience of Christ crucified, which is ours when we believe in him.

That is enough to cover all our sins and to make us confident, freeing the conscience from the fear, dread, and terror of God’s approach, without doing what our first father, Adam, did, who trembled as he tried to cover himself with fig leaves.

In fact, if we had to appear before God relying-- no matter how little-- on ourselves or some other creature, then, alas, we would be swallowed up.

Therefore everyone must say with David: “Lord, do not enter into judgment with your servants, for before you no living person shall be justified.”^56

OK, maybe so. Let me restate the question by taking it a bit at a time:

Protestants:

Using only the Four Gospel Accounts, what does Jesus Christ by his words teach us about how we are to be saved?

Why not just dig out your Bible and answer the question?

We are talking about salvation—shouldn’t be that hard a question.
You know my sword is sitting right in front of me OPEN.
To not have one open in any forum like this would be shameful.

I would just like to know the point of the question before I do an hours worth of study.

Well I thought the question was pretty clear.

What did Jesus “say” about Salvation in the Bible.

What did Paul “say” about Salvation in the BIble.

How tuff can that be?

Since there is no Misslollipops webcam, I do not know whether your Bible is open or not.

But since it’s handy, why not answer the question?

I know I’ve done quite a few hours’ of research at the behest of even insincere questioners.

I’m curious as to why you’d be reluctant to do so.

I agree with Chuck, the questions seem pretty simple. I’ll grant that the “Belgic Confession of Faith” discusses what Paul teaches, it simply attempts to make the “Sola Fide” claim.

That still leaves the questions of:
  • What did Jesus “say” about Salvation in the Bible
  • Whose teaching takes precedence? (Obviously, the answer would be “neither” if they don’t conflict.)
By the way, which version of the Bible is that footnote on Rom. 3:28 from? One of the versions we see today, or the version where Martin Luther added the word “alone” to the verse (along with removing the books of James, Jude, Hebrews and Revelation)?

Just curious, I don’t know much about the history of that document.

Not from:

Romans 3:28 (New International Version)

28For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law.

Romans 3:28 (New American Standard Bible)

28For (A)we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.

Romans 3:28 (King James Version)

28Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Romans 3:28 (American Standard Version)

28 We reckon therefore that a man is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

Perhaps it might be found here:

Roemer 3:28 (Luther Bibel 1545)

28So halten wir nun dafür, daß der Mensch gerecht werde ohne des Gesetzes Werke, allein durch den Glauben.

Now, why should Luther add anything to Scripture?

It’s a mystery.

sounds like you believe your sword to be weak is some since if you need to know your adversary first.

Have faith, strike if you believe your in truth.

It is never a waste of time to quote scripture. His word will not come back void.

Quoting scripture on some of these forums is most often a waste of time
Scripture disagrees with you.

:bible1: Isaiah 55:11 so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

God Bless,
Maria

1 Corinthians 1:18 (King James Version)

18For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

Can you explain to me why you take the time to post, and post, and post again – just to say why you can’t take the time to post?

It’s like walking into a room and announcing – repeatedly – that you’re not going to talk to anyone there. Well, stop talking. You’re only draw attention to yourself and away from higher pursuits.

Stop it.

Matthew 10:14
"Whoever does not receive you, nor heed your words, as you go out of that house or that city, shake the dust off your feet. (NASB)
