I was raised catholic and am now studying kabbalah. There are a lot of Christian Kabbalists in the world and Ive read several books by Dion Fortune who is a well known Catholic Kabbalist. I would like to hear the points of view and opinions of others who believe the kabbalah is inappropriate or adverse in any way to the Catholic faith. I believe in Kabbalah. My open heart and open mind is how I found the Kabbalah and although I hold the notions and ideas of kabbalistic writing with high regard, I would use an open mind to take into consideration others’ points of view.

I had some interest, as I do with mainstream Judaism. But not enough interest to get into the many special terms and concepts.

Kabbalah, is it against Catholicism? Non-Catholic Religions
Simple question, stated in the title, not sure what else to add but the followers of Kabbalah seem to indicate that their philosophy is not one that is in opposition to existing religious beliefs. So is the study or practice of Kabbalah in opposition to the teachings of our church?
There’s no reason for a well-formed Catholic to be showing this level of interest in the Kabbalah. I don’t think that it’s good.

Kabbalah, especially as might be taught by Dion Fortune, is incompatible with Catholicism.

Fortune practiced sacred magic, denied the divinity of Christ, denied teachings on heaven and hell, and was a member of The Golden Dawn. I don’t think she had a Catholic Baptism. She was no Catholic.

Kabbalah comes in many forms. It’s theoretically the mystical interpretation of the Torah and the Zohar. It’s believed that throughout time mystics are born who interpret the books in accordance with what people in that time need to learn. There have been so many so called “mystics” that finding a definitive interpretation is impossible.

Don’t mess with it. There is nothing you need that cannot be found in Catholicism.
All the rest is not supported belief.

The Orthodox Jews consider it heretical from what I could ascertain.

Please don’t listen to this people. Kabbalah is the path to be a better human being . Saying that it is forbidden or can’t be studied by a catholic is as ludicrous as saying that a catholic can’t do yoga or listen to the Dalai Lama. Both come from other paths than catholicism , but they help you have a better life… don’t they?
All these myths about Kabbalah are diseminated either by people who don’t know anything about it or don’t want to relinquish control and want to be the “sole holders of the truth” . Studying Kabbalah will not push you to leave your faith, but will help you understand better creation and our purpose in this world. Don’t abandon it. I have been studying Kabbalah for 12 years and I can tell you for a fact some of the things I read here and incredibly ridiculous and can only come from people who don’t know the first thing about Kabbalah and just repeat what they hear from other people who also don’t know anything, . The only “damage” it has done to me is to damage my selfishness and egocentric behavior and made me become a better person

where do you get these things from? who is Dion Fortune? I have studied Kabbalah for 12 years and never heard a single mention of him

I’ve heard of the Kabbalah, but wasn’t entirely sure of what it was about. So I went to New Advent, which from my experience has solid and Catholic explanations on various topics. Sure enough, they have a page on the Kabbalah: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08590a.htm

You may be interested in this part:
Several of its doctrines recall to mind those of Pythagoras, Plato, Aristotle, the neo-Platonists of Alexandria, the Oriental or Egyptian Pantheists, and the Gnostics of the earliest Christian ages. Its speculations concerning God’s nature and relation to the universe differ materially from the teachings of Revelation.
I’d stay away from it.

Yes, i think if one had the interest it would be in a specific religion for any number of reasons. Often it is family or environment. Sometimes thoug it is purely academic or part of one’s own search.
There is a wide range of opinion on anything not strictly traditional Catholic.

It may sound good on the surface but you’re eventually dabbling with the occult; it is a spiritituality devoid of Christ. You are a Catholic, and as a Catholic you know that Jesus Christ is God Himself. So why would any Catholic want to dabble with foreign spiritulities, especially since Scripture tells us that our battle is against Powers and Principalities—that is, very intelligent fallen angels whose goal is to deceive and drag usaway from the truth and toward a denial of Christ. They are envious of Man because we have an opportunity to share eternal life in God’s eternal glory and take their place in heaven through salvation, whereas they fell and are forever in their eternal prison of damnation, and want us to fall with them.

I would recommend you get Fr. Thomas Dubay’s book A Primer on Prayer—Ignite the Fire within, which guides you through all the levels of Catholic spirituality. Also, here is a good video by Fr. Apostoli where he speaks about the levels of spiritual progress based on the mysticism of St Teresa of Avila, a doctor of the Church:

Its actually the other way around …Plato learned Kabbalah from the jews in Egypt according to Isaac Newton. yes, please stay away from it. Its definitely not for close minded people.

I study such things. Kabbalah is not for Christians. I have followed the Dalai Lama for a long time but his school of thought, while containing some good things, would be confusing.

Says who ? you ? It would be interesting to know who taught you Kabbalah that made you think like that

But you don’t deny the pantheism and gnostic elements? Because just one of those things alone would make it worthy to be avoided.
yes, please stay away from it. Its definitely not for close minded people.
I have no openess in my head for heresy.

" To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables…" Luke 8:10… what are the " secrets" ?? what secrets is he talking about?..

If you read the passage in context He explains what he means. He explains the secrets hidden in the parable of the sower. Here it is illustrated:

what in God’s name are you talking about man ? are you sure you ever “studied” Kabbalah? would you mind sharing with whom?

I never claimed I did. Did you read my post? I cited an article from a rather reputable Catholic encyclopedia regarding the Kabbalah and posted an exerpt from its conclusion.
