Kateri to be canonized in October
FONDA — Years of prayer and lobbying the Vatican for sainthood by devotees of Kateri Tekakwitha at local shrines were met with jubilation Saturday after Pope Benedict XVI announced Oct. 21 as the canonization date for the young Native American and mystic who lived in the Mohawk Valley in the 17th century.
The Pope also will elevate to sainthood another woman with upstate ties, who also is credited with miracles. Mother Marianne Cope, who grew up in Utica in the mid-1800s, entered religious life with the Sisters of Saint Francis in Syracuse. She was among seven new saints scheduled for canonization.
“Everyone is very excited and it’s wonderful that she will become the first Native American saint,” said Wayne Carpenter, a retired state worker and volunteer office manager at the national shrine to Kateri, a 200-acre compound on Route 5 in Fonda, Montgomery County.
Meanwhile, at the nearby Auriesville shrine, where Kateri was born in 1656, plans are under way for a large celebration on Oct. 21. Those who run the 400-acre site expect a significant increase in the 75,000 annual visitors when it opens for the season at the end of April.
“We’re just overjoyed after waiting for this for so many years,” said Beth Lynch, event coordinator at Auriesville’s Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs, which is run by Jesuit priests.
“We’ve been working with the Sisters of Saint Francis and we share each other’s joy that this is happening at the same time for two New Yorkers,” Lynch said.
Kateri was born in 1656 in Ossernenon, now called Auriesville, a few miles west of Amsterdam. Her mother was a Christian Algonquin and her father was a Mohawk chief who died of smallpox when she was 4 years old — a disease that damaged the girl’s eyesight and scarred her face.
Wonderful news! Not just for us locals but our Canadian friends since Bl Kateri “belongs” to them as well.
Even though they are off the beaten path, see the Martyr’s shrine & Kateri shrine, they are right down the road from each other & it’s beautiful country, esp. in autumn.

hurray!!

Now, I wonder if Father will let us list her among our North American Martyrs when we pray the litany to them.😃

Lovely news.
I’m been praying to and for Kateri all of my life.

However, isn’t Juan Diego the first Native American Saint?
Maybe Kateri is the first Native American Saint of NORTH America?

Kateri was not a martyr.
I thought she was, but I will stand cheerfully corrected.

St. Juan Diego is the first Native American to become a saint. Mexico is part of the North American continent.

So, Kateri would be the second Native American to become a saint.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, of course, was the first native born United States citizen to become a saint, but St. Frances Cabrini was the first naturalized United States citizen to becom a saint.

I say–the more the merrier, and I’ll share them all with Canadians, Yanks, and Mexicans!😃

Yes.

Kateri was not a martyr.
You’re right-Kateri was not a martyr like the Jesuit missionaries.

But she was the ‘fruit’ of their martyrdom, seeing that she was born in the very place where their blood was shed. ‘The blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians’, to quote Tertullian.

But I’m happy about her upcoming canonization! She will share it with another Blessed who was from Upstate NY (coming from Germany as a child): Mother Marianne Cope!

So here in New York State we shall be ‘doubly blessed’! :extrahappy: 😃

We can use it!
Also, it’s nice that Bl Kateri will be canonised before Bp. Hubbard retires, as he is approaching 75.

I assume there are shrines to Kateri and the NA Martyrs in Canada – anybody have info on them?

I have a little granddaughter whose parents named her “Lily Kateri…” Little Lily was overjoyed when she heard the news.

That part of New York State on the heights just south of the Mohawk River is stunningly beautiful in Autumn. When I was in high school, Catholic schools in the NYC area chartered a train to take the pilgrims up to Auriesville.

Yes, and I remember we went by bus as a class from Catholic schools in Utica. That owuld have been the late 1950’s.

Do you still live in Utica? If so, that’s where I’m from! What a small world!

I’m still pinching myself for joy that Upstate NY is going to have not one, but TWO new Saints being canonized! 😃 👍 :extrahappy:

I don’t have any internet links for the shrines in Canada.

All I know is that Kateri’s shrine is across the St. Lawrence River from Montreal, at Caughnawauga (or Kanawake, to use the Indians’ spelling). The name of the mission is Saint Francis Xavier.

The one for the Jesuit Martyrs is in Midland, Ontario, near the site of their main mission at Sainte-Marie. I think that the site where Saint Jean de Brebeuf and Saint Gabriel Lallement were tortured and killed is also nearby.

But I do know the sites for the shrines in New York State:

www.martyrshrine,com
www.katerishrine.com

Or else you can just google ‘Auriesville Shrine’ or ‘Fonda Shrine’ because those are the names of the villages where they are located.

No, gone since early 1960’s. Still have a few relatives near there and get back occasionally.
Many of my memories at:

The story “Nowhere” (No. 114) is a favorite among my former school mates.

Her tomb is right across the river from Montreal, inside a church on the Indian reservation there. My wife and I went there when we visited Montreal several years ago,
