I’ve a question about keeping the Lord’s Day, and I have not been able to find a straightforward answer to this anywhere. Is it sinful to do academic work on the Lord’s Day? For instance, I’m going through finals right now, and every day really counts. Would it be wrong for me to work on a paper this Sunday?

Thanks in advance for any answers

No - it is only sinful to do unnecessary work on a Sunday - meaning work that could have been done on another day or avoided altogether.

Exams and assignments which have set deadlines would be an example of necessary work. But do be sure to make it to Mass - Our Lord will see to it that you don’t suffer for taking time to obey that command 🙂

Ahh, see, that is my concern. For example, I was assigned a takehome test on Tuesday which I am still working on. Technically, I could have spent more time on it on Tuesday and Wednesday, but I didn’t end up getting much work done on those days. In light of the fact that I might have been able to get the paper done sooner, is it still okay for me to do some work on it on Sunday?

By the way, I will of course be attending mass.

Of course it’s fine :yup: - you seem to have just accidentally misjudged how long it would take rather than deliberately leaving it 'til Sunday - am I correct?

Study is a bit different anyway to paid work or manual labour (which is what the term ‘servile work’ refers to).

I know how you feel and don’t punish yourself by not finishing
your assignment.

The endeavor to make Sunday a true day of
rest is not something that happens instantly. Our society is
not set up for it. Why even the church holds bake sales,
pancake breakfast, spaghetti dinners, festivals, etc. on Sundays.

I tell you from my own experience that it is worth the effort it
takes in planning to create your holy day of rest. Thinking
about Sunday when it’s not Sunday and you’re doing other
things takes Practice. It probably took me over a year to
train myself to think ahead. Just getting the idea in your head
is farther than many people will ever get.

I began practicing with a question on Sunday: Is this really
necessary right now today? This question has served me well.

As far as it being sinful goes, apparently all you need to do to
keep holy the day of the Lord is go to mass. Even the priest
will go to a restaurant, golf course, or other place that requires
others to work on a Sunday. If he believed it was wrong, he
wouldn’t cause others to do it.

In my case, it is litter box chores. Litter boxes really need to be scooped daily to keep the cats happy. Happy cats = happy Guardian. :yup:
