I’ve a question about keeping the Lord’s Day, and I have not been able to find a straightforward answer to this anywhere. Is it sinful to do academic work on the Lord’s Day? For instance, I’m going through finals right now, and every day really counts. Would it be wrong for me to work on a paper this Sunday?
Thanks in advance for any answers
I know how you feel and don’t punish yourself by not finishing
your assignment.
The endeavor to make Sunday a true day of
rest is not something that happens instantly. Our society is
not set up for it. Why even the church holds bake sales,
pancake breakfast, spaghetti dinners, festivals, etc. on Sundays.
I tell you from my own experience that it is worth the effort it
takes in planning to create your holy day of rest. Thinking
about Sunday when it’s not Sunday and you’re doing other
things takes Practice. It probably took me over a year to
train myself to think ahead. Just getting the idea in your head
is farther than many people will ever get.
I began practicing with a question on Sunday: Is this really
necessary right now today? This question has served me well.
As far as it being sinful goes, apparently all you need to do to
keep holy the day of the Lord is go to mass. Even the priest
will go to a restaurant, golf course, or other place that requires
others to work on a Sunday. If he believed it was wrong, he
wouldn’t cause others to do it.
