Kelly Clarkson is advertised as singing the “Schubert” rendition of the “Ave Maria”. However, it appears while the music will sound like the Shubert version, the lyrics will be provided by Celine Dion. Google or YouTube “Celine Dion Ave Maria” and see what you think. The lyrics are a mish mash of nothingness. I guess this is just another poke in the eye to the Holy Father. Don’t they understand that this is not a performance but she is actually singing one of the oldest and most important prayers of the Church?

So, did she do this? I only caught the end so couldn’t tell. If she used different words, I can imagine the Pope thinking…“what in the world was that?”

As far as I could tell, it was the Schubert version, and it really was as pretty a rendition as I’ve ever heard. By the end, I was pretty choked-up and misty eyed, and I don’t often get like that over anything!:o

Not bad for a Baptist girl, not bad at all!😉

Uh, nope. Instead of singing the Hail Mary in Latin, she sang the Celine Dion mishmash Woody mentioned.

You’ll notice the first part is in English, and the only Latin phrase she sings is “Ave Maria, gratia plena” (Hail Mary, full of Grace) and Dominus tecum (the Lord is with thee). All the rest of the prayer is left out of her version. See YouTube video below:

Kelly Clarkson sings nonsense version of Ave Maria.

Here are the lyrics she sang:
Ave maria
Maiden mild!
Oh, listen to a maiden’s prayer
For thou canst hear amid the wild
’this thou, ’this thou canst save amid despair
We slumber safely till the morrow
Though we’ve by man outcast reviled
Oh, maiden, see a maiden’s sorrow
Oh, mother, hear a suppliant child!
Ave maria
Ave maria, gratia plena
Maria, gratia plena
Maria, gratia plena
Ave, ave dominus
Dominus tecum
The murky cavern’s air so heavy
Shall breathe of balm if thou hast smiled
Oh, maiden, hear a maiden pleadin’
Oh, mother, hear a suppliant child
Ave maria
Ave maria

I’m wondering whose big idea it was to have a non-Catholic sing a non-Catholic version of the Ave Maria to the Pope. That version was insulting.

I thought it was beautiful.

Little did I know it was just another snub at us poor Catholics…

Beautiful? Other than the lyrics being all a mess, I thought it was a little pitchy, dawg. 😃

That was painful.

I would have preferred a different version as well, but I still thought it was pretty beautiful. And by the way, Kelly Clarkson is Catholic. I looked it up.

Agreed, Elzee. One could chalk it up to ignorance if she weren’t Catholic.

I don’t see how butchering the Hail Mary is in any way beautiful.

Kelly is not Catholic. She was raised in the Baptist Church and is non practicing at this time.
I would describe her performance as ignorance. She simply did not know and no one in authority corrected her. She wanted to please the Pope and did nothing out of meanness. She sings Pop music. That is what she sang to the Pope. A Pop rendition. She genuinely is impressed with him and honors him as a great man.
She does not know or understand what the Ave Maria is and what it means to Catholics.

I haven’t been able to find a reliable source that says whether or not she is Catholic. I’d like to think, like Woody said, that it was ignorance.

However, it seems like someone in charge should have corrected the situation. If Woody knew what version she was going to do before she sang it, then someone running the show would have known, too.

Perhaps we have ignorance on the part of some Catholics, too. 🤷

What an absolute beautiful version of such a great song.
It was truly inspiring.👍
Thank you Kelly
and God bless you !

To each his own, I guess. I just can’t be that enthusiastic about someone’s taking the words of the “Hail Mary” and changing the words to complete nonsense.

It was a beautiful musical piece, but it was not “Ave Maria” by Schubert. It was not the ancient prayer of th Church. One of the most powerful of prayers.

I’m not a Latin major, so what exactly was the “nonsense” she sang?

I have no reason to doubt your word on this, because you seem to be in the know on exactly what she sang, but I’ve yet to find anyone that complained about the version. She certainly couldn’t have come up with it herself, so she got it somewhere. Everyone to a person seemed to love it and found it to be a beautiful rendition.

I was moved by the moment, and I think everyone else was too…

The music was beautiful. It was written by Schubert I’m guessing around 300 years ago. The original Hail Mary has parts of it written by Luke in the Bible. The second paragraph has an unknown writer but was probably written about 900 to 1000 years ago.
The lyrics above were penned by someone for a Celine Dion song also named “Ave Maria” a couple of years ago. As you can see, other than the title and about 3 lines in Latin, this song has nothing in common with the song by Schubert or with this most beautiful and powerful prayer of the Church. The original by Schubert was not so much a song as it was a prayer sung to music.
Hope this helps.

Hi Jim,

Here are the original lyrics first in Latin, with the English translation below. Compare this to what Kelly Clarkson actually sang, which is posted a couple times in this thread.
Latin:
Ave Maria
Gratia plena
Dominus tecum
Benedicta tu in mulieribus
Et benedictus fructus ventris
Tui, Jesus
Sancta Maria
Mater Dei
Ora pro nobis peccatoribus
Nunc et in hora mortis nostrae
Amen.
Hail Mary
Full of grace
The Lord is with thee
Blessed art thou among women
And blessed is the fruit of
thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary
Mother of God
Pray for us sinners
Now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
The lyrics Clarkson sang were a slap in the face to Catholics and to Mary.

You’re right, Kelly Clarkson didn’t come up with this herself. The version she sang, unfortunately, is also on a Celine Dion Christmas album.
