I heard her rendition. Yikes. There are just some songs un voce bianca should not sing! Celine Dion could have carried that tune, but not Kelly Clarkson.

Amen to that. I think with vocal training (and the right lyrics 😉 ) she could have pulled it off beautifully. The average listener will think it sounded pretty, but real musicians can spot a belt voice coming in just under the pitch every time. It’s like nails on a chalkboard.

Actually it would be nice if all of you bashing Kelly would do some research first. The “Ave Maria” lyrics that we all associate with Schubert’s version are not the original lyrics. In fact, the original title of Schubert’s song was “Ellens dritter Gaesant” (Ellen’s third song) and what Kelly sang were the original lyrics of the song (a poem by Sir Walter Scott from “The Lady of the Lake”). So please, next time, before you criticize someone do some research first; it’ll show that you’re not ignorant.

I would have preferred Ms Clarkson to have sung the version that is traditionally sung in Catholic churches.
But what she did sing was truly beautifully done and I think she has undeniable talent.

getlostandfound-I think you missed the point. Kelly Clarkson said she had always wanted to sing “Ave Maria” for the Pope. Instead she sang “Ellens dritter Gaesant” (Ellen’s third song). Therefore, she did not do what she wanted to do. At an obviously Catholic event with the Pope in attendance, you would expect that she would have sung the Schubert version so it could be recognised for what it is …a most solemn prayer of the Church.
I noticed that this was your first post and I sensed a lack of charity in your use of the word “ignorant”. You will get much out of this forum if you use a touch of kindness.

pax vobiscum
It is now probably time for this thread to be laid to rest.

Woodyww, my intention was not to offend. I just stated the fact that uninformed bashing makes one look ignorant. And yes, I’m new here, and thankfully I’m Catholic so I would never use any of this against our Church. But uninformed posts are exactly the fuel that the opponents of Catholics use to take away from the validity of our arguments. So just imagine how many “not-so Catholic friendly” individuals have stumbled on this thread just as I have, and the impression they got about us Catholics.

If you read the original words of Schubert’s song you’ll notice that they, too are a prayer asking Mary for intercession, so statements by many in this thread that this song was a “slap to the face to Catholics” are far from true, and take away from the validity of cases where actual persecution against the Church occurs.

I disagree with all of the critics of Kelly Clarkson on this. The Pope looked pleased when he realized she was singing in English, if you look at his reaction as she sings “Maiden mild”:

Also, being German and being a known classical music lover, (particularly Mozart, but I’m sure he likes Schubert, too) he was probably familiar with the German lyrics. Yes, it wasn’t the later adaptation of the Latin lyrics that have made “Ave Maria” a liturgical song, but it still was a song about a woman who cries out to the Virgin for help. What she sang was Ellen’s “Hymn to the Virgin” (Ellen’s Third Song) with Latin added in the middle. The fact that she has a young, feminine voice was perfect for singing this particular piece. It wouldn’t have worked with a man or a much older woman singing it. I think it worked well for a Youth Rally setting.

This is an interesting article on “Ellen’s Third Song”:

I’m surprised by the angry reactions that I’ve seen here about this, because all of my friends and family members who were watching the Youth Rally live all enjoyed Kelly’s performance and I think the Pope, for the most part, did, too. He closed his eyes when she was singing a couple of times like he was enjoying the song, so I don’t think he was offended by the version she sang. And, really, that’s the only opinion that matters, since she specifically wanted to sing for him.

I don’t see anything liturgically wrong or theologically incorrect with the song.

I think Celine Dion would have done a better job, but how cool that an “American Idol” got to sing for the Pope!

Inspirational to the younger generation. My kids know who Kelly Clarkson is, but they don’t know the words to either of the Ave Marias.

Can people not continue to be inspired to write more songs of prayer and praise?

What was really cool was that my son in law was playing the piano for Kelly as she sang that day. he is her music director and he knew that he would see the Pope but had no idea that the Pope would motion for him to come forward with Kelly when she finished the song. Kelly who is not Catholic really didn’t know what to do so she gave the Holy Father a little curtsy and a head juke. My son in law is not Catholic either, but before he knew it he was on his knees in front of the Pope and kissed his ring and received the Holy Father’s blessing. While not Catholic and even being somewhat anti-Catholic he realized that he had just experienced a moment of profound grace. He also received a rosary from the Pope.
He called me as soon as he got off stage and said “Well, how did I do?” I told him for a good old charismatic evangelical he did just about perfect. He wanted to send me the rosary but I told him he needed to keep it. It was a precious gift and even if he didn’t pray the rosary, maybe someday he would. He just kind of laughed but I never received the rosary either.
Everyone please pray for my son in law, daughter, and grandchildren that they might feel the pull of God’s grace to his one holy Church.
We are converts who swam the Tiber about 3 years ago. We are not at all popular in our very charismatic evangelical family. It’s really kind of lonesome out here, but I think if anyone in our family might consider the Church it might be my daughter and son in law because above all I think they are searching for Truth, and we all know they will find that Truth in the Church.

Wow. Your post gave me chills. It’s really amazing to hear the “inside story” about one of the musicians who played for the Pope that day. Thanks for sharing that! I will definitely keep your son-in-law and daughter in my prayers and will ask others whom I know who were watching that day to do so also.

:blessyou:
