Bishop Richard J. Malone says he is “extremely disappointed and deeply concerned” that State Sen. Timothy M. Kennedy has adopted a pro-choice position on abortion, in what appears to be an unprecedented statement by a Buffalo bishop about a local Catholic officeholder.
The bishop noted the conflict between Kennedy’s support for pro-choice bills such as Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s Women’s Equality Act and the Buffalo Democrat’s faith.
“For anyone to say that he or she is a faithful Catholic and to be pro-abortion/pro-choice rights is totally inconsistent with Catholic teaching, which is clearly articulated in the catechism of the Catholic Church,” Malone said.

No one who respects life should ever refer to ‘abortion’ as ‘choice,’ even when reporting a news piece. 😦

This is the most significant observation in the article: that after 40 years the condemnation of a Catholic politician for supporting abortion is considered “unprecedented.” One might well ask what has kept the rest of the bishops virtually silent regarding similar positions taken by thousands of Catholic politicians over that span?

There are only two possibilities for someone who is “Pro-Choice”.

Either

A) They don’t know what an abortion is or only have a vague idea and never actually saw pictures of it. (This used to be me)

B) They do know and are heartless.

Actually, my position on abortion before becoming Pro-Life was that I didn’t have a position on it. I couldn’t see the importance of the issue one way or the other. I had no problem with people who were against abortion, and I had no problem with people who were for it. I used to be “Pro-Choice” by default, but I wouldn’t have cared if every abortion clinic closed down. So, more accurately, my position was ignorance and apathy on the issue itself. I instantly became Pro-Life when I saw pictures of abortions.

In most cases they were put on notice privately. That’s what happened to Cuomo and Sebelius that their conduct is unconscionable and that they should either confess their sins or not present themselves for Communion. Because of that, they no longer present themselves for Communion.

The question about communion is something to be discussed privately between the bishop and the politician, but this was not about communion. A Catholic politician publicly took a position contrary to the teaching of his church and his bishop publicly rebuked him for it. That action should be the norm, not the exception.

John Kerry is not fit to serve in government and should excuse himself from Holy Communion.

I understand what you are saying, that we tend to use their language.

I think as a rule on these forums, they often ask the posters to post the original title in the article.

Sad to say, there are to many Catholics polititions that fit that discription. Can you imagine how different things would be if all Christians lived up to what Christ wants of us? God bless, Memaw

Yes, it’s one of the guidelines for the news forums.
Use the original title. When you post an article, be sure to use the original title in the subject of your post. This helps users find the article and lessens the chance of a double post.

As someone who’s come over from the dark side, I was in category A. I suspect this and most politicians who conveniently change their position do so for political expediency. I appreciate the Bishop speaking out publically. Being “pro choice” aka pro death, is becoming less and less acceptable. Unfortunately the Democrat platform and in certain areas leading politicians are so pro abortion, that up and coming pols grab onto this political ledge and hope it enhances their careers.

Pray their hards of stone will be turned. I think education on the truth about abortion is essential.

Statement of Most Reverend Richard J. Malone
3 days ago by Office of Communications
Bishop Richard J. Malone issued the following statement as a result of many questions and concerns raised by parishioners about the decision of New York State Senator Timothy Kennedy to change his stance on abortion. The story was originally reported by The Buffalo News
on Feb. 16, 2014.

When I first arrived in Buffalo, I was encouraged to learn of Senator Kennedy’s pro-life position. Today, I am extremely disappointed and deeply concerned about his turnaround on this most critical issue, the protection of pre-born human life.

For anyone to say that he or she is a faithful Catholic and to be pro-abortion/pro-choice rights is totally inconsistent with Catholic teaching, which is clearly articulated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable.”

Practicing Catholics who claim they are nurturing their children in the faith must teach their children that abortion is intrinsically evil, that human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his or her existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person, among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life.

Pope Francis calls abortion a symptom of a throwaway culture. Just last month, he said, “It is horrific even to think that there are children, victims of abortion, who will never see the light of day.”

We will continue to pray for and promote a culture of life.

It’s time for Pope Francis to start doling out some excommunications. The ONLY way you’ll wake these people up!

There have been. They are ignored.

There are also automatic excommunications that apply to the issue. They don’t have to be formally made.

But advocating for abortion (as opposed to having one or providing one) while certainly a mortal sin, is not an excommunicable offence under Canon Law. Hence the appropriate penalty would be to at least warn the offenders they are committing a grave sin. Certainly the Pope could excommunicate anyway, but prudence would dictate that such an extraordinary approach be applied sparingly.

Perhaps the Bishop could kindly suggest, in the impending spirit of Lent, that it might be advisable for Mr. Kennedy to approach the confessional?
