Kentucky Derby: Controversial ruling

I don’t think it was intentional cheating. The track was a mud pit and the horses are still very young. Sliding around and spooking are common with young colts in the mud. Mr. Saez actually controlled Maximum Security quite well from what I saw. But jockeys get blamed for everything that goes wrong.

That’s the problem with muddy tracks. Too unpredictable, and it levels the field. I knew there would be issues especially with all those young horses all crowded together. Most of the favorites were nowhere near the lead. It’s probably better to just bet on some longshots in this scenario.

Some horses love a sloppy track and other love the turf. It’s unusual to find a horse that does well on all surfaces and conditions. If only we could control the weather

They said on the news tonight that Maximum Security’s owner pulled him from the Preakness because he now has no chance to win the Triple Crown and he didn’t see the point of having the horse run again so soon.

🤔

Does that sound reasonable to those of you who know horses and racing?

No (added characters)

Can’t he still get a Triple Crown with an asterisk?

The triple crown winner needs to win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont stakes.

So he won’t be the winner. Next year maybe.

Not really. I have seen horses win the derby and skip the Preakness and go on to win the Belmont. So it happens. There might be a legitimate concern. The races are not geograghically close so the travel on top of training could be too stressful for some horses which is why very few win the Triple Crown. It’s probably more him just pouting though. Hurt feelings and I don’t blame him.

The triple crown winner must win all three races.

That’s why there aren’t frequent winners.

Yes. What I was trying to say is most horses would still go on to race even though they would not win the Triple Crown. Some trainers choose to skip the Preakness even if they win the derby.

I guess that has to be the norm. Otherwise Preakness wouldn’t have many racers.

That’s kind of what I was thinking–that he would race anyway for the joy of the race and the practice.

That’s what a human would do, though. I wasn’t sure if a horse would act like a human, although I know that they are among the most intelligent animals in the world. I’ve read some amazing stories about horses that demonstrated high intelligence.

So do you think Maximum Security senses or knows that he has done something “bad?” (even though it wasn’t really his fault, right?) Can the humans around him communicate their displeasure with the results, and can that make him feel uncertain or sad, and if so, could this affect his career as a race horse? Is that something that horse owners and trainers have to be careful about?

I just really admire horses, and feel badly for the poor horse.

No. I think the controversy is the real reason he pulled him.

Some horses do sense things, but I don’t know this horse. Some horses are very sensitive while others aren’t. I think it’s the controversy. I have a feeling the owners and trainer are simply mad

The horse did nothing at all bad. He is a baby still really and the track was slick. He got spooked. Thorobreds are often high strung and spook easily.

I wanted to be a jockey when I was a girl. Unfortunately I like food too much. I did exercise the horses at the track while in college. You don’t have to be too skinny for that.

Too bad - now its going to court. IMO it was a bad decision. Max clearly had the lead over Country House before any lane crowding and kept it. It would be interesting to review films of previous races to see if this type of movement has been the cause of such a decision when nothing other than thundering hooves, close together, on a surface crying out for a “slip and fall”, is ruled this way. 😞

What? It’s really going to court? Wow! Hopefully, things will be made right and Maximum Security’s rightful winner status restored.

If it is, hopefully I get to collect on the bet! Wait…I don’t think I kept my ticket. Darn it!

With all that mud and the horses being so young, they should have rescheduled the race. They’re lucky none of the horses were injured.

The winning horse is ill and won’t be going to Preakness. Poor pony.

No triple crown winner this year.
