The Bishops of Kenya have called for a general boycott of an upcoming vaccination campaign, saying that it should not go forward unless there is further scientific testing.
The vaccines, which is sponsored by the World Health Organization and UNICEF, was scheduled to begin around the country on August 1. However, according to Fides, the bishops have called the vaccine’s safety into question after their requests for information and testing were denied.
The concerns regarding the vaccines follow an unrelated incident in which 30 children, who received an anti-malarial drug in western Kenya, appeared to be paralyzed. It was later discovered that the vaccine contained the pain reliever, Paracetamol, which is believed to be the cause of paralysis in those cases.

Either the story is confused, or the Kenyan bishops are confused.

From the story:
The concerns regarding the vaccines follow an unrelated incident in which 30 children, who received an anti-malarial drug in western Kenya, appeared to be paralyzed. It was later discovered that the vaccine contained the pain reliever, Paracetamol, which is believed to be the cause of paralysis in those cases.
It is, of course, a tragedy that some children appeared to be paralyzed (although I’m not sure what “appeared to be” means here) after taking an anti-malarial medication. To the best of my knowledge, though, anti-malarial drugs are not vaccines. I’ve taken them when traveling to parts of the world where malaria is endemic. Paracetemol, by the way, is acetominophen.

Also from the story:
The bishops stated that a neonatal tetanus vaccination campaign was a “disguised form of population control.
This just sounds like paranoid conspiracy nonsense.

Funny. I was just watching a television documentary about Franklin Delano Roosevelt last night. Polio is pretty much gone from the developed world, and that’s because of vaccines. We have a generation or two or three who have grown up with no immediate experience of what the world was like before vaccines. That’s good, of course, but the loss of collective memory is dangerous.

My daughter has had every age-appropriate vaccine that doctors recommend, and I am 100% confident that I’ve made the right decision. Especially since so many (well-educated, affluent, caring) people in my neck of the woods have chosen not to vaccinate their children.

If the disease is malaria, what I wonder in this case is why the WHO is attempting vaccination instead of eradicating the disease completely through sanitation. It idoable and much more successful. Malaria is caused by a mosquito. Vaccines in the malaria case are not very helpful because as long as you have the mosquito it will stay and be transmitted. It is the typical cutting branches solution while leaving the cause of the problem there. Why not eradicate the mosquito and then have a free from malaria country? Maybe this is one of the points that the bishops are unhappy about

There is at this time no malaria vaccine (see here. That’s why I thought either the story or the bishops were confused. So I don’t think the WHO is trying to eliminate malaria through vaccination. If a successful malaria vaccination is ever developed, that would be a wonderful thing.

In the meantime, yes, mosquito control is effective, although it appears that mosquitoes are evolving insecticide resistance. Widespread distribution of mosquito nets is pretty helpful.

I was paralyzed at the age of 6 after receiving a DPT booster in 1958.
I had guillain barre. I don’t get the flu shot.

In the old days, i believe they used quinine to treat malaria. I had no idea that there was any
vaccine for malaria. And maybe it they tried to create more plant based insecticides foe bugs, maybe the mosquiots would be able to be killed more effectively.

I think this is pretty simple… The Bishops want people to know what they are receiving and they want to know this is safe.

The WHO cannot be trusted in Africa, nor can African leaders. It is very possible for them to mix in “population control drugs” into the mix

May I ask, how long did it last? Also, was it an immediate cause and effect thing?

That must have been terrifying! Thank God you’re okay.

I too was paralyzed for a few days in the early 1980s from a DPT booster. I was most likely around the same age. I remember crying and crying because I could not walk.

Abyssinia and Innisfallen:
I have visited the link from the first post and none of the material being cited appears there.
Is it possible that you inadvertantly clicked upon something else?
The link address offered in the post is:

Perhaps you could double check and post back to clarify.
This is a portion of what I am finding in the linkeed article:
"The vaccination campaign, which is sponsored by the World Health Organization and UNICEF, was scheduled to begin around the country on August 1. However, according to Fides, the bishops have called the vaccines’ safety into question after their requests for information and testing were denied.
Bishop Philip Anyolo of Homa Bay, who also serves as chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Kenya, addressed the bishops’ concerns during a recent press conference in Nairobi.

“We are not in conflict with the Ministry of Health, but we have an apostolic and moral duty to ensure Kenyans are getting safe vaccines,” he said."

The article goes on to discuss concerns that a previous vaccine might contain ingredients which would serve as a form of population control and the way this was addressed as bishops sought to have the vaccine tested to ensure that it did not have such a dual purpose.
There are reasons for Catholic bishops to feel the need to protect their flocks from attempts to control their fertility without their knowledge or consent. There is a history, both in the United States and abroad of such actions.
We are so blessed to have such shepherds advocating for us.
May God bless our bishops and strengthen them in faith and holiness.
Amen.

I received the vaccine 10 days before onset of symptoms. There is not 100% proof this was the cause, but when I read my medical records for the first time many many years later I found it interesting that in 1958 they found it significant enough to put in my medical chart.
I was in the hospital completely paralyzed for around 3 months. The iron lung machine sat outside my room but luckily my lungs kept working which is rare. It took a full year to recover. I had to learn to walk and use my hands and arms all over again. I still will have bouts of extreme fatigue and weakness. I would not wish it on anyone. I know I was fortunate to survive because they didn’t have the treatments back then that they do now.

I’ve checked. The story has been edited since I first clicked on it. It’s slightly different now.

However, my quote regarding Paracetemol was copied from your post (not the link), so that is accurate.

The “population control” quote now reads:
The bishops stated that a neonatal tetanus vaccination campaign was a “disguised form of population control."
A typo (a missing quotation mark) has been corrected.

So everything I said still stands – no reason to change anything.

To clarify:

This (below) is copied from your quote from the story:
The concerns regarding the vaccines follow an unrelated incident in which 30 children, who received an anti-malarial drug in western Kenya, appeared to be paralyzed. It was later discovered that the vaccine contained the pain reliever, Paracetamol, which is believed to be the cause of paralysis in those cases.
These words no longer appear in the story.

I posted questioning this, because, as far as I know, a vaccination for malaria *does not exist *yet (although research is ongoing). So I question the accuracy of the story. Or at least the writing – the story made it appear as if a vaccination for malaria was being discussed. Also, I’ve never heard of a vaccine containing a painkiller – why would it?

I also question the site from which the story is taken – changing a “news” story without acknowledging a correction is extremely poor journalistic practice.

Clarification: I messed this up a bit in responding. The link and quotes were from Abyssinia’s post, not jeannetherese’s post.

I’m glad you’re okay; that just sounds so awful. This YouTube video is almost unbearably sad and painful to watch, but all the same, I think people should watch it. It shows a young girl being comforted by her mother after a Gardasil reaction.

If it’s too painful to watch, please just turn it off.

This girl’s been in my prayers for a while now.

They had me take the MMR booster before first grade. I was five, and it sent me to the ER. 😦 Much more cautious with my kids, but no matter what your personal reasons, people still want to lump you with the flat-earthers and the moon-landing-deniers and the aliens-built-the-pyramids people. 😦

I had been reading some stories last year about HCG being in some Kenyan vaccines?

If there’s truth in that, no wonder the Kenyan bishops are a bit skeptical.

you are lucky it was just for a few days. in guillain-barre the autoimmune system mistakenly attacks the myelin sheath covering the nerves. It is like an electrical short. The brain cannot send signals for the muscles to move thus paralysis results.

I think there have been a few cases of guillain barre after the gardasil vaccine administered also.

I know, but it was scary. I was able to walk to the car, but by the time we got home, I couldn’t walk.
