I’m always amazed to see people talk about “Science” as though it’s some sort of monolithic force. Science is simply an evolving explanation for observable phenomenon, and it only limps toward the “how” of the natural world–never the “why”.

You might be right. But why not remove everything from your life that that limping monolith has given you and write back. If you can. At least it is moving. 😉

I just read this article and wanted to know if this or the rest of the article in any way contradicts Genesis?I

[If this dual-orbiting planet hypothesis gets confirmed, researchers suggest it would lend credence to a theory that our moon was created when a planet-sized object, sharing a similar orbit to Earth’s eons ago, possibly crashed into our home world.]

I would have to ask why Christians look at Genesis as if its a science book?

I don’t know where you guys get your information, but the latest is that matter is only the observation of energy patterns at the level of human perception. At the quantum level it is all energy flashing in and out of existence. So in a sense, lol, matter has already been disproved.
Do you have a creditable link for this? Also how is energy flashing in and out of existence? What is creating energy since I was under the impression by the 1st law of thermodynamics that nothing natural can create or destroy energy?

Also this kind of sounds hilarious saying we can only know matter on a human level. It sounds like scientists are telling us to just “have faith” that energy is “flashing in and out of existence” since they know if they were to attribute this processes to something natural (something science should be able to investigate as well as more than capable to investigate) then they would either be contradicting the 1st law of thermodynamics, or would have to get rid of said laws altogether.

Oh also if you could provide in your link where it says what we know about matter and energy on a “human level” has been disproven then I would greatly appreciate that source as well. It is my understanding that anything that hasent been completely investigated by and explained by science is still a THEORY.👍

I’m not denigrating science, I’m marvelling at the awed and superstitious use of the term (and concept). We try to stifle debate and inquiry with the word now; we use “science” to give our opinions weight. Science has become a new god who must not be questioned. The problem is that science itself an ongoing debate.

The global warming issue is a pretty good example of this. Anyone questioning the inexorable melting of the planet was told “scientists agree” without much attempt to explain how we knew that Man was responsible for one centigrade degree over 100 years. Turns out there has been plenty of scientific opinion out there that humanity-caused climate change was probably hogwash, or at least overstated in powers of hundreds.

The pure science of the debate has, of course, been irreversibly tainted by politics, as policy decisions and government money have become dependent on a scientific issue that is far from decided. But now we have people in public debate claiming the banner of science as a preacher might have held forth a bible at the Scopes Trial.

I’m not arguing against scientific inquiry–I’m just laughing at how it has become a new god replacing the old one.

Buffalo, I’ve been reading your psots for awhile and respect your opinions on most things, so tell me, IF the moon was created when a planet sized object struck into earth, does that conflict with what the Bible seems to be saying, that God just created the moon and the sun…as in poof!..they’re created?
I do not know. We do not know how long a “poof” is or how long a “breath” of God is. What we get from Genesis is that creation was at once thought of by God.

Worth a read is St Augustine on “prime matter”. AUGUSTINE AND EVOLUTION
A STUDY IN THE SAINT’S DE GENESI AD LITTERAM AND DE TRINITATE

For my part, while knowing God IS, I neither accept the industrial ontology of science nor the improbability of the Christian story of God. Both are in the same boat, as far as I see. And you are right about politics ans science. As the Oakland Tribune revealed, during the Bush administration the bureau charged with transmitting scientific papers regarding climate change consisted of one man. He was a former Exxon executive who spent his time, as was shown by crates of evidence, removing or downplaying any sense of urgency or catastrophe from scientific papers before they were submitted to Congress for consideration. I won’t go into the litany of other such incidents where oil companies hired psudo scientists or formed alleged citizens groups to obfuscate anything that would impinge on their ability to turn a profit and outsource costs, including huge damages as are often reported in the news.

And all that is more a matter of moral housekeeping than science anyway, as the science simply indicates where the dirt is and how it gets there. You might also remember that the first reaction humans have to disaster is denial. The greater the disaster, the greater the denial, especially if money is involved.

But that is why it is necessary to re-vitalize religion and science together. Faithers are rightfully skeptical of anything that guts the world of its soul. And scientists are rightfully skeptical of anything that not measurable. But we live in a world that has both and inner aspect constituted of Meaning dependent on God, delved into by interpretation, and manifestation, also dependent on God, the workings of which are figured by measurement.

So we have the quantifiable as exteriors which the “Enlightenment” gave us as a gift for parsing the material world, but it forgot its Soul, and that is a huge mistake. And we have religion, which tends to reason from premises not universally accepted or proven even by experience. If they were, we’d have just one religion instead of cultural differences in faith. Actually, we do have that cross-cultural insight into Deity, but that is another story, one that rankles people of simple faith.

So yes, due to a kind of un-navigability posed by the astonishing number of religions available, there might be a tendency to take refuge in the reliability of surfaces, although it is not useful enriching beyond a point, even if it is praise of the laws of God as they manifest in dimensionality. But faith as well needs to adjust to a deeper Reality concerning its meaning and origins.

How, exactly, should we look at it?
Well the first thing would be to not make the mistake of considering it a treatise on Science. That would be a good start. 👍 Secondly to start viewing it for what its real purpose is and that is to teach us about salvation. This is why God gave it to us.

Then let me ask you – does this potential finding of the Kepler spacecraft contradict Genesis? I’m getting a lot of answers but none directly say if it does or doesn’t contradict Scripture.

How can it? Scripture tells us zip about what God may have done in other star systems.

What we may see in deep space says nothing about what happened in our world.

But Scripture tells us that God made the sun and moon, which sounds as if it was instantaneous, it doesn’t tell us that He made the Earth and then later an object hit the Earth, nor does it sound (to me) that it leaves open that possibility.

Why couldn’t God have used one mechanism to form our world, and another elsewhere?

Important - Scripture and Revelation are true. Certain things and events are described.

How exactly does one go about removing anything that touches on science?

Hi, Faith1960,

All the Kepler spacecraft has done is discover what appears to be two planets in the same orbit. I believe that appearance does not contradict anything in Genesis.

God loves you,
Don

I really don’t understand your question.

Oh, Faith!

Scripture neither does nor has to, tell us how God created the universe nor our planet nor our moon. The Patriarchs very wisely refrained from asking God, “How did You do that?” The point is, that God is there and He has reached down from Heaven to contact His creation, humanity. That’s the wondrous thing.

God loves you,
Don

I apologize for sounding obtuse but what IF they crashed and the crash formed the moon? Would it contradict Genesis then?
