Killing Animals for "Sport"

I am replying to all the people talking about “conservation” as a reason for hunting. BTW: Almost no one is addressing the topic here. The topic is hunting for “sport” and the “game” of it.
Actually, the topic is ‘killing’ animals for sport, not hunting.

I am sure there are a number of people here that see a difference.

I would like to know what the alternative methods would be.

Having, in my lifetime, watched the population explosion of wild animals of all kinds, including predators, (due to limitations of hunting and elimination of predator bounties) I have my doubts that methods other than hunting will limit their numbers. It is astounding how fast they can multiply.

But one thing I cannot abide is the idea of introducing or allowing the presence of predators like mountain lions into populated areas, no matter what the reason. I would much rather see deer limited by hunters than by mountain lions. Hunters don’t intentionally kill children for food. I don’t even like to see the state protect bears, which this state does. Nor do I favor acceptance of wolves or even coyotes in populated areas.

Now, if you’re talking about setting aside big wildlife areas like Yellowstone or something, I don’t have a problem with that, as long as dangerous animals are not allowed to wander outside and into populated areas, and as long as people are properly warned about the dangers of wandering into the wildlife areas.
I think Sean Boyle would like to see another thread on this corollary. The topic is hunting for “sport” and the “game” of it.

If you kill an animal in an act of hunting, for the “sport” and “game” of it, then that does fall under the topic here. I will re-post the OP.
Is*** sports hunting ***ethical? Can we kill animals for the game of it?

??? I started this thread. My intent was to discuss hunting for “sport” and the “game” of it. I think that I clearly stated that in the OP. Hunting for “sport” and the “game” of it are psychological reasons for hunting.

Can we kill animals for the ***game ***of it???
There is the disconnect! In your mind, hunting “for sport” and “the game of it” are the psychological reason for hunting.

We don’t kill animals for the game of it. Some people do, but then some people are serial murders too. If a serial murder were a vegan, would all vegans lifestyle be bad or wrong?

That is the case you make in your sentence above a generalization about hunting no specifics. To many generalizations about hunting and hunters from the vegan side to make sense in this discussion.

Feral hogs are indeed dangerous, both to domestic animals and humans. And they are increasing exponentially in the wild. About every two or three years there is an article in the news or on TV here where some bow hunters went hunting for them. The news is that they lost. If these hogs can kill adult men, then you can see the danger to children. I personally know an individual who had his hunting partner killed by a pack (4 or 5) of these hogs. He was barely alive when they got him to the hospital. They had to amputate both legs in an attempt to save him, but he died about two days later. Some of these can weigh 800 to in excess of 1000 pounds. Most range from 200 to 400 pounds. And they are incredibly fast. They destroy fields, crops and domestic animals in their hunt. An inexperienced hunter is well advised not to go after them unless accompanied by an experienced hunter.

The thread is about hunting/killing for sport. There are posts about how hunters are dong conservation work. So very much on point.

Actually, the thread title is killing, and the OP specified hunting.

Seems that there are people that do not see a difference, and it makes for a difficult conversation.

If the vegans here are open to some education, I am sure a number of matters can be cleared up.

No, I think that we have clarified that people hunt for different reasons. The question is whether it is ethical to kill animals, via hunting or other method, as a “sport” and for the “game” of it, sans any need of food, etc. Is hunting or killing animals for the enjoyment of the game, ego, or other psychological reasons ethically wrong?

If a deer hunter hunts to feed his family, or to participate in what he believes to be honest conservation culling, does he fall into a different category from the deer hunter who is just in it for the “sport” and the “game” of it? Who is only interested in how killing makes him feel, or in the ego of his success?

I am not a vegan (not yet) just a mere vegetarian but even this vegetarian is always happy to acquire knowledge.

Not that I have hunted either one, but I’ll bet it’s a lot safer hunting bear. They gun them down from a helicopter in some places. I’d like to try hunting them some day.😃
