Why is this even controversial? He made his comments on CNN back in March.

The video posted in this current thread is about him speaking at the evangelical Liberty University. Of course he is going to defend his comments, why would anyone expect otherwise? He has made a great many videos with evangelist Ray Comfort. And his career at this point is in Christian-oriented films. And . Cameron’s religious viewpoints are well-established and well-known So why would anyone be concerned when he expresses them? 🤷

Because anti-gay speech is now hate speech, so deem the doubleplusgooders.

It is hate speech. If I said Catholicism were “detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization” I’m pretty sure you would find that hateful. Just because you happen to agree with what he said, doesn’t make it any less hate speech.

But that would be patently false. What Cameron said (may Almighty God, the One, Only True God bless him for it) was true.🙂

Hate speech is just meant to confine opinion and silence dissent. Attack the argument, not the right to say it

I agree about what he states on same sex marriage, however you may want to check out what he and the denomination that he belongs to feels about Catholicism.

Why would anyone care what Kirk Cameron says? He is an expert of nothing. He is a washed up actor, He is an anti-Catholic, is that enough reasons yet?

He has the attention of many people my age who remember Growing Pains, particularly my sister, who had a big crush on him, and chose her diet based on his recommendation. I don’t think that his anti-Catholic hate is a notable part of his identity, and being that it is pretty common in Evangelical circles, probably not a big deal to worry about.

I think it is more worthwhile to focus on our commonalities with Evangelicals. When it comes to social issues, they tend to be conservative like us. We are political allies, and we can use this to our advantage. There is no defeating people like Obama without the Evangelicals voting with us.

Has anyone here attacked Cameron’s right to say what he thinks?

I doubt Cameron engages in deep theological pondering. However, he is a close friend of Ray Comfort, an evangelist from New Zealand who believes Catholics are not Christians. As far as I know that is the extent of Cameron’s unfriendliness to Catholics.

When it is called hate speech, then his right to say it is bring attacked

I disagree. When his remarks are given that term, what he said is being criticized, not his right to say those things.

Criticism of political statements is routine (especially in this era of internet and cable news), Such criticism is an essential part of the concept of free speech.

I don’t agree with calling what he said “hate speech,” but I disagree with a lot of political commentary.

Seconded.

I admire his stand against gay marriage, but it’s not a specifically Christian one. Plenty of Muslims and even older Hindus would concur with him on it.

What’s more of a concern is that the ministry he’s associated with has some pretty juvenile things to say about the Catholic faith:

livingwaters.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=938%3Agetting-your-goose-cooked&Itemid=143&lang=en
(because making a toilet reference is so Biblical)

livingwaters.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=938%3Agetting-your-goose-cooked&Itemid=143&lang=en
(because heretics are martyrs, don’t we know?)

I’m as much an “Evangelicals and Catholics Together” person as the next guy, but some of this stuff just puts me off. Don’t we have enough Catholics who are ready to speak out against gay marriage? 😛
